  1. Thanks both. I am a big Coryell fan and also of Burton in that era (for that reason). There was a certain Coryell - Burton - Gibbs - ©Bley nexus around that time. This therefore goes on the 'must have' list. Edit: © is for Carla not copyright!
  2. This is being reissued but was only previously released in Japan: Gary Burton Quartet Live features Larry Coryell, Steve Swallow and Bob Moses. It looks good, anyone ever heard it?
  3. http://www.acrobatmusic.net/?cid=5&AlbumId=792 This has never been released on CD and features the cream of British jazz musicians, especially Tubby Hayes and his first known recordings on vibes. Due for release next week with copious sleeve notes by Simon Spillett.

Great! Now to order the H McN!

I order them via Vocalion directly too. Have the Dankworth and Harriott now and these are great - the Dankworth "Off Duty" is a bit different but the "What the Dickens!" is a classic. Anyone know if the McNair is actually in stock yet?
  6. Me too, although I fear that this will be the Zappa remixed version again. I really preferred the original although apparently Zappa didn't (hence the remix). With the greatest respect to Mr Z, if it ain't broke, [please, please] don't fix it. Apparently you didn't check the site Д.Д. linked to in post #5 - the remaster of Hot Rats has the original mix. You're correct - I didn't check it (apologies); however, I am still confused as to why Zappa's family would sanction the reissue of the original vinyl mix (which I loved) after Zappa went to the trouble of personally remixing it for the CD release (I think I am correct here) because he didn't like the original mix. In any event if this original vinyl mix really is being reissued on CD then I am delighted and will be buying it as soon as it's available. Edit: Just checked Amazon and this is what it says: "2012 reissue of 1969 album from original 1969 ANALOGUE MASTER. Features 'Peaches En Regalia','Willie The Pimp' & 'It Must Be A Camel'." so I guess that's it! No need to apologize. Although they agree on this point, I assure you that Luke Pacholsky's site is far more trustworthy and accurate than Amazon. His research is always very thorough. This blog says it all about Hot Rats the analog remaster - check out paragraph six: Hot Rats (Zappa Records, 2012)

  9. I also bought a couple of CD-Rs from Neil just before he died. Obviously I should have added "A Symphony of Amaranths" to the list! BTW I see that his website includes a contact page. Has anyone used it to buy anything recently? You all probably already know this but just in case I'll mention it again "Impressed Volume 2" is still available (ie from Amazon, etc) and contains two Ardley tracks, the title track from Le Dejeuner and Will You Walk a Little Faster from Amaranths. Both those tracks are worth the price alone IMHO.
  10. I was fortunate enough to see Lol playing with Kevin Ayers and the Whole World, seeing him compere at Bracknell (priceless, bone dry humour) and even playing with the Brotherhood of Breath at the 100 Club and playing solo too. He was a true legend of British music (not just jazz). Anyone who hasn't heard it should immediately listen to his eccentric but irresistible double album Ear of Beholder which was reissued a relatively short while ago on Esoteric. RIP Lol.
  11. I bought the album and like it. It only received a lukewarm two stars in July's issue of Jazzwise mag, but I think it was a little better than that. Bruce, who was the living embodiment of the original band, has lost none of his talents, his voice sounding as resonant and powerful as it did nearly 50 years ago. Cindy Blackman had a very difficult job in trying to fill TW's shoes, but does a good job, John Medeski sounds more like Larry Young than Larry Young at times and it is a revelation to hear Vernon Reid's guitar outings here, whereas on previous Bruce albums, he is restrained by comparison. Compare and contrast this album not so much with Lifetime but with Trio Beyond (Scofield, De Johnette and Goldings)whose ECM album "Saudades" is to my ears somewhat less dynamic than this latest paen to the great TWL.

Yes it is me - thank you - but for my "day job" not for jazz-related activities. The 'Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe' article was written with some emotion because I really do feel that this particular gem (along with "Hum Dono") should have been reissued long ago. I just can't wait to discover what Vocalion will be reissuing in their next batch! Just picked this up. Many congratulations, Roger. Thanks Jazzjet!

Why thanks K.U. - Le Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe (the title track) is on "Impressed Vol 2" (the Gilles Peterson compilation album of British jazz). This is on Spotify and on iTunes (search under Gilles Peterson - all albums). Or it could still be available to buy on CD too. Worth every penny as there are some great tracks there. Once you've heard Le Dejeuner (the title track) I think you'll be 'impressed'.

  16. A new book has been published on a British jazz legend; "John Surman - The Belting Zodiac" (Soundworld, 2011) is now available from FMR Records and priced at a very reasonable £12.99 including p+p in the UK). It weighs in at over 250 pages and author Mike Pearson (who wrote "Conversations in British Jazz" - Soundworld, 2004) has included a huge number of newspaper cuttings and photographs, many of which have never been published before. This is compulsory reading for anyone interested in contemporary British jazz and is highly recommended. More details here: John Surman: The Belting Zodiac
  17. No news on the Vocalion front, sadly. Hopefully it will be worth the wait.
  18. More about this album here, complete with audio samples : Giles Farnaby's Dream Band The track 'Newcastle Brown' was apparently issued as a single. I really like this - thanks Bev

Means no Hum Dono or Afro-Jazz. Amancio D'Silva and Guy Warren were never ever important. But surely Joe Harriott was important by any standards? Trouble is I can't remember the exact phrase he used 'significant'? 'important'? 'major'? one of those. Unless it's going to be some more Ted Heath stuff and I don't think so, then who knows? It could be another major seam that's been mined.

I spoke to Vocalion today as their website says a new batch of jazz is upcoming this month. Unfortunately it is unlikely to be before June now...however, the impression I got from them was that this next batch will feature extremely important British jazz music(ians) - they wouldn't give me any other clues so I can only wait in eager anticipation.
  22. Also on iTunes similarly priced to Amazon
  23. This Triton release seems very interesting. Wakeman played with (late) Soft Machine for a while and was quite ubiquitous on the Brit jazz scene in the 1970s. Good player. Will look out for this - thanks Bev. Edit: This seems to be available as an MP3 download for only £4.14 on Amazon.co.uk - bargain of the year? Triton
  24. Yes the hair styles of that couple were disinctly 1980s not 1990s, so a bit longer than 20 years!
