  1. How does it compare to Ian Carr's 'Sounds and Sweet Airs' with John Taylor on pipe organ also recorded in a church (well, cathedral actually)? I haven't heard Pipedream. [bTW Clifford - can't reply to your PM because I can't seem to access my PMs]
  2. I have tried this already but all I get is the following options: My Profile; My Settings; Messenger; Manage Friends and Manage Ignored Users.
  3. I was recently notified by email that I had a PM but when clicking on the link Organissimo reported it didn't know where to look. I can't even find where the PM function is on my screen. I can't see a mention of it in my settings either. I realise there has been another thread on PMs but I couldn't seem to reply to that one either! Not having a very good day. Any ideas please? Thanks Roger

    windmill tilter!

News just in...Windmill Tilter will be reissued for the first time on CD by BGO Records in two months time (around July / August?). (Source: BBC Jazz BB)
  5. Re: Laurie Johnson, yes Synthesis has been reissued on CD - first as a OOP Redial series CD and also, thankfully still available (just about) CD entitled The Musical Worlds of Laurie Johnson. http://www.amazon.com/Musical-Worlds-Laurie-Johnson/dp/B00008OP26
  6. Two reissues by Bob Downes are now out on Esoteric Records in the UK. The first Open Music has never been available on CD before and Electric City was only reissues on CD in Germany by Repertoire but has been OOP for years. Very good news as these are both excellent albums IMO: http://www.cherryred.co.uk/esoteric/artists/bobdownes.php
  7. I have a cd of this as part of a box bought from the Dankworth's place directly http://www.quarternotes.com/ Not sure if they are still trading but its worth asking? Thanks - I'll check it out. Peter Re: The Dankworth box set - yes I have this too, and it should still be available from the Dankworth company. This is one of the great mysteries. All four of his 'concept' albums $1m collection, Zodiac Variations , What the Dickens and Lifeline in this excellent box and not expensive either. But only available from the Dankworth co directly. Never reissued on CD by Polygram or Universal or anyone else on CD. Weird because they are not only excellent but in terms of British jazz, important recordings too.
  8. I have an apparently legit CD of this - on British CBS, if I remember correctly (I'm at work right now and can't check). That doesn't mean it's print now, but it has been reissued. That certainly was legit - reissued on CD by Sony a few years back with other great CBS Realm series albums - a few copies still knocking around Thanks. It must be out of print now. I was looking for it recently and couldn't find it anywhere, except a £55 item on Amazon ( although there was a cheap mp3 download). Luckily a friend came up with a copy. Its one of the 5 star albums in the Penguin Guide so you would have thought it would be more widely available. Still, its only jazz. Baptised Traveller does very occasionally appear on eBay. Also Re: Mike Westbrook 'Live' this did make a re-appearance on CD a while back (not all that long ago) but again, yes you've guessed it, in Japan only. Can still be sourced sometimes via eBay occasionally. The Westbrook was done with the collaboration of Cadillac and new sleeve notes were added. Pity it wasn't done here. Good album.

  10. ps there is some good news - see my latest thread here:
  11. Fans of the great Bob Downes will be no doubt delighted (as I am) by the long overdue reissue on CD of these two beauties from 40 years ago: http://www.cherryred.co.uk/esoteric/artists/bobdownes.php
  12. Ian Carr/Jeff Clyne Springboard LP is definitely in need of reissue because it is great - All of the above though. Also Neil Ardley's other great album A Symphony of Amaranths. Also OLIV by the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and TCB by Alan Skidmore (which like the Ronnie Ross Cleopatra's Needle) was given a brief CD reissue, but only in Japan! The lack of Dejeuner, Hum Dono and Windmill is criminal.
  13. Thanks Bev! BTW if anyone wants a copy of the book I am giving copies away free but asking recipients to make a donation (an amount of their choice) directly to the Alzheimer's Society (of which this concert was in aid) this offer applies to the UK only I'm afraid. Email me here at the Ian Carr website.
  14. Yes I must concur with Sidewinder (whom I'm sorry to have missed saying hello to at the concert - but it was packed and having just had a Pizza I was dying of thirst so queued up for 20 mins for ...water! - sorry, I digress) . Notwithstanding my review as alluded to above, I must say it was all fantastic, all hyperbole aside. Even my dear wife enjoyed it and was quite surprised by it especially Northumbrian Sketches (which really was magnificent). When Ray Russell appeared on stage I wanted to say to her "Do you realise that that man has played and recorded with the GREAT Gil Evans?" but didn't have a chance.
  15. "Or Brand X, or all the studio sessions he participated in. He was a great drummer." Phil Collins was a great drummer, just listen to any Brand X album (or even early Genesis). Not many rock drummers could compete with him technically.
  16. Sir John wrote the first Avengers theme which featured Honor Blackman (as Teasing correctly points out above) but unfortunately the BBC in their haste, played both his theme and the later, better known one composed by Laurie Johnson on the Radio 4 news reports of his death. The irony is that these Avengers shows were broadcast on commercial TV, whilst Dankworth's even better know theme tune 'Tomorrow's World' was a BBC tv show and they didn't play that!
  17. Sir John Dankworth, one of the most important innovators in British jazz died today aged 82. Dankworth with his wife, Dame Cleo Laine, shared an enduring partnership in jazz for over fifty years. A 'breaking news' story on this appears in Jazzwise magazine's online pages here: http://www.jazzwisemagazine.com/component/content/article/51-2009/11127-jazz-breaking-news-giant-of-british-jazz-sir-john-dankworth-dies-at-82
  18. Received my replacement box from Sony US shipped by Fedex to me in the UK. Hooray! Thanks to all who advised on the process for getting my faulty box replaced.
  19. Yes I'm definitely going to this one and have booked tickets already.
  20. No I hadn't but thanks Sidewinder, I'll try this
  21. I purchased my box from Amazon.co.uk wwho said they would replace it only if I returned the original box to them. This is not the deal I heard about from Sony offering to replace the box sets and as a goodwill deal, the purchasers could keep the original box set too. I have not been able to contact anyone at Sony in the UK about this deal and would be really grateful if anyone could supply specific contact details - not just an postal address for Columbia Records UK which I have. Seems like US purchases have been given a good service but UK ones have not. So far. I had glue 'issues' with my set. Any advice gratefully received.
  22. Some very sad news from the UK. Virtuoso bassist Jeff Clyne passed away yesterday (16 November) at the age of 72. Jeff Clyne had been a key figure in British jazz for over 40 years and played on some groundbreaking albums, Stan Tracey's Under Milk Wood, Tubby Hayes' 100% Proof and the first three seminal albums by Ian Carr's Nucleus. He also played and recorded with the likes of the Jazz Couriers with Hayes and Ronnie Scott, Keith Tippett, plus hosts of others. He was prominent for a while in nascent British jazz rock bands such as Isotope, Gilgamesh and his own band, Turning Point. Jeff Clyne also recorded a little known but superb pre-Nucleus album with Ian Carr plus Trevor Watts and John Stevens entitled Springboard , on the Polydor label, which is highly sought after by collectors. Clyne was also a teacher and co-director of the Wavendon jazz course, and taught at the Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Apart from being a great acoustic and electric bass player, Jeff, who I had the privilege of meeting on more than one occasion, was also a great guy and will be sorely missed. R.I.P. Jeff.
  23. You actually saw Chapter Three! One of my favourite early 70s bands but never got to see them. Do you know whether there are any live recordings of them? Marching Song did precede Love Songs. Both great albums. BTW I really like Chapter 3 too and managed to obtain a CD of Chapter 3 Volume 2 a little while ago although it's not available now more's the pity. Perhaps one of the specialist reissue companies will do the decent thing. Mike Hugg was very underrated as a songwriter.
  24. A Memorial Concert for Ian Carr to mark the Anniversary of his death, is being planned for Tuesday 23rd February 2010 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London Details are still unconfirmed but it should feature Nucleus in its most recent line-up plus guests Ray Russell and Tim Whitehead; a group led by Michael Garrick and featuring Norma Winstone; a group of Ian's former students led by Nikki Yeoh hopefully featuring the Mondesir brothers. The organisers are hoping that there will be a performance of Ian's "Northumbrian Sketches" a suite for Trumpet & String Orchestra. The concert will also be a fundraiser for research to combat Alzheimer's Disease. Tickets should go on sale in mid - December. A spokesman for the organisers said: "As we have been recruiting musicians to appear at this memorial, the love, respect and esteem with which they all the speak of Ian and their enthusiasm for his music is fantastic. He did so much for Jazz in this country as a player, band-leader, composer, teacher, writer and broadcaster that it's difficult to encompass it all. It would need several concerts like this to do him justice."
