  1. Probably cuz we know nothing about the area and want to stay close by. I think my father told me that the MFA is a particularly good one. If that's close by, that may be what we do with ourselves before Wednesday's game.
  2. My wife and I are going to do a quick hit and run to Boston in June. We've got tickets to two games against the Reds and in order to save money, we're just flying on Tuesday and out on Wednesday, and to avoid a rental car, we got a room at the Buckminster, which I understand is in Kenmore Square and just on the other side of the Mass Pike from Fenway. So, Tuesday afternoon and until game time Wednesday night, we'll be limited to walking distance from the Buckminster/Kenmore Square, and the question is: #1 (for my wife): What kind of area is it and are there any particular places we should check out (stores, museums, art galleries)? #2 (for me): are there any decent record stores in the area, particularly vinyl? I remember driving past a Tower Records on my way to the Mass Pike to get out of town after a game, is it still open? Thanks!
  3. Give it a rest, Alex. The fact is that the vast majority of people voting for both Bo and Carrie are too young to vote in a real election or don't bother to anyway. Next you're going to tell us that Diebold ran the vote counting apparatus for Fox, too.
  4. That was not a problem when I saw the film. The moment the movie began, it became the most eerily quiet theater I've ever been in. Not a popcorn movie - and no one was eating anything, let alone laughing.
  5. Let's see: Schilling on the shelf and Wells either injured or ineffective when he pitches. Ramirez, Bellhorn, Millar and Renteria not hitting like they're supposed to (and until very recently, neither was Mueller). Foulke having a surpringly un-Foulke like year. Yes, we have to kick it up a couple of notches - even Damon has said tonite's game against the Blue Jays is a "must win". But the fact remains that overall, the pitching has held up remarkably well without the #1 and #2 starter (and Wade Miller is already showing that he may be the most important "acquisition" of all), and despite the hitting woes of a significant portion of the lineup, the team is very close to the top in runs scored again and is in fact ahead of the pace set by last year's record setting offense. With 2/3 of the season to go, I have to believe that Manny, Millar, Renteria will hit as they always have, Schilling will be back soon enough, and if Wells doesn't get his act together, we'll still have a superb staff of Schilling, Miller, Arroyo, Clement and Wakefield. And Foulke has been one of the most consistent relievers for a long time, so he's going to perform up to standards eventually.
  6. Man! You have a sense of humor, how can that be??? with great lines such as.... Dracula: I'm going out for a bite to drink. Dracula: Children of the night, shut up! Ok, a flawed film for sure, but very 70's and Richard Benjamin's best role. I mean Come on, flashing Dracula his Jewish star, trying to kill him with a silver bullet in the heart , an Oscar worthy performance for sure! ← I completely agree with Berigan, and not just because I always quote that film whenever the subject of a quickie comes up with my wife: "With you, never a quickie. Always a longie."
  7. Soul Cookin was on Argo, not Prestige.
  8. I think its a no-brainer that what Mike says is true. "Out" people have gone beyond the tradition but haven't necessarily lost their appreciation for it. "In" people -and I'm one of the most "in" people this side of Hardbop Heaney - just can't find anything in the "out" cats to appreciate.
  9. Yes, it may be depressing to read about Billie's drug bust, but this man has led an interesting life. He's not just a cop who hassled Billie Holiday, and I'm glad that you called attention to the article. There's no need to delete.
  10. Someone's gotta let old PD know about this, I know he's spent a long time finding all of Carmell Jones' recorded output.
  11. Agassi won the French once, in 1999. Certainly as a baseline pounder, his game was more suited to clay than grass, but he didn't come through very often. I've certainly grown to admire Agassi a helluva lot more than I did when he was all about the denim shorts, the hair, and "image is everything."
  12. Actually, he said in his press conference afterward that its a sciatic nerve problem in his back. He thought it was a hip problem for a while and then found out what the true problem was. He had a cortisone shot that helped out earlier in the year but it really flared up on him. Its too bad, because it sounds like it will take a minor miracle for him to compete in best of five matches at the remaining Slams. I guess he stayed out there through the last two sets because he knows he won't be back to the French again and didn't want to go out on an injury retirement.
  13. I know a lot of people hate her Blue Note album but I actually like it, and its got some nice Grant Green and Ike. Does she sound OK or did you just see that she is still gigging?
  14. Just saw the end of the match, Agassi bounced in the first round, 6-0 in the fifth. Is this the end? Its not that I expected him to win or anything, but to lose in the first round to some 23 year old ... I guess the assumption has been all along that this would be his last year anyway, its too bad this is how its gone. Better luck at Wimbledon and the French, Mr. Steffi Graf! Meanwhile, I think Federer and Nadal are looking like the favorites, and I have a strange feeling that Miss Henin-Hardenne is going to complete her comeback from her injuries and win it all, even though I'd love to see Miss Sharapova win another slam.
  15. ← Just be aware that It Might as Well Be Spring is one of those early Roach performances, and more than a few people here think its too "rinky dinky". Not a problem for me, and Ike Quebec is terrific on this, but since you've been all revved up based on his later recordings, thought I'd give you fair warning on this one.
  16. Dan: maybe you didn't notice that several of the European subscribers only got their #25 sets four or five days ago (also I assume a few are still waiting?) - thus John is perfectly in schedule, as far as I'm concerned! ←
  17. First of all, I'm in! Secondly, I may be confused, maybe we've gotten out of the groove due to the recent extended delay, but I thought signups start when the discussion starts, and shipping is sometime around the posting of answers to the current BFT? Since there will be sub-distributors in the States, I think its a very good idea to get things moving sooner rather than later. Sending PM momentarily
  18. Thanks for posting this, Mike. Normally I'm reading the NYT on Sundays, but my schedule isn't allowing it. But since you posted the link, I was able to catch the article.
  19. Actually, you did (see above). That's why I objected.
  20. I also find it hard to believe there are people who don't recognize the talent that Phil Hartman had.
  21. Let me ask you this, have you used your thre year old again to make these sorts of decisions?
  22. You know, I've been thinking about my own "don't get enough respect" thread dedicated to Houston Person. My wife and I saw him this winter in Fort Lauderdale and it was a tremendous show, though the greaze wasn't quite as thick, since he brought a pianist with him, no organ. So we got more of the American Songbook tunes that he's been doing on his Halfnote albums. We definitely weren't complainig though! Houston's a master, and with Teddy Edwards and Stanley T. gone, no one who digs big toned tenor should sleep on this guy.
  23. Check out this Ebay auction. There's a link to Jack's cut, though I'm a bit afraid to click on it. If someone has more guts than I do, please report back. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4728933928&rd=1 Then the same dealer offers this Burt Reynolds album, also with a sound sample link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4728941368&rd=1 Be afraid. Be very afraid.
