  1. I generally have no idea what recordings they're using as sources, but to my ears, some of the tracks sound fantastic. Listen to the broadcast or the online stream here: https://www.cc-seas.columbia.edu/wkcr/node/20306#
  2. Happy 100 Thelonious Monk

At today's New Yorker online: Think of Thelonious Monk by Ethan Iverson (I see that the link has been posted in the Jazz in Print forum here. Hope its being posted here too is okay.)
  3. I too found it to be an enjoyable novel, and it, along with the rest of George Orwell's works, is available online for free: http://www.george-orwell.org/Keep_the_Aspidistra_Flying/index.html http://www.george-orwell.org/
  4. Gulf Coasters, Be Safe!

Precisely, but my take on the optics is very different. I hope we can agree to disagree. At any rate, I've now read that she'd changed into tennies by the time she got to Texas. Meanwhile, with Fenton Robinson on guitar,
  5. Gulf Coasters, Be Safe!

Re the photo in the previous post: It's gotta be Photoshopped, only it's not! At least Marie Antoinette didn't wear cfm heels* to leave the palace during a rainfall and go tour a calamitously flooded region. *Please Google "cfm heels" if you don't know what they are.
  6. Happy Birthday Charlie Parker

Once again, Now's the Time! A New York Times op-ed was published today for the occasion — not a music column, mind you, but an op-ed. At the risk of sounding like a cutesy greeting card, Happy Bird Day.

Here Are Ways You Can Help People During Hurricane Harvey [animals too, and of course during the aftermath of the windstorm too] Then if you wish, you can check out suggested charities here (I always do): CharityNavigator.org

  14. Insomnia

My insomnia (too) takes the form of waking up far too soon. If any insomnia sufferers here are smokers, as I am: It kills me to admit it, but when I don't smoke for the last couple of hours before bedtime (generally because I've run out of cigarettes), I sleep for 8 or 10 hours. I've read only the most recent page of this thread, so forgive any duplication, but over-the-counter diphenhydramine is commonly taken for insomnia and is pretty benign. I've tried taking two 25mg capsules of it half an hour before bedtime, and . . . it didn't keep me from waking up too soon, but YMMV. (Diphenhydramine is the active ingredient in Benadryl in the United States, but Benadryl elsewhere apparently has different active ingredients. It's also the active ingredient in Nytol, Sominex, et al. in the United States, but not necessarily elsewhere.)
