  1. Thanks but not exactly what I meant. Was looking for similar songs from other artists. A friend of mine who's getting into jazz asked me about it and I rec'd Clifford Jordan's song John Coltrane as something kind of similar.
  2. Any recs on similar tracks to Trane's Miles' Mode?
  3. It's interesting how these prices fluctuate. Comics are on a corrective path after some inflationary nonsense during/immediately after COVID quarantines. Maybe these values have shifted a bit toward records, but even with that high priced Blue Train, LPs for the most part are still a fraction of what comics are/we're going for.
  4. I like some of what I’ve heard from his albums. Definitely would like to catch him live one day. Seems like most neo style artists lean into electronics these days. It can work
  5. I have one Jacquet CD and it’s an early MCA sides collection. I actually included it in my first BFT I think. Anyway, found the album and love it and his playing, which seems similar to: Ben Webster, but less fuzzy (or whatever the technical term for that aspect of Webster’s playing is) Don Byas, but less vibrato Coleman Hawkins, but with less flourishes Arnett Cobb, but slightly less bluesy (like maybe 10% or so) which is all a good thing as it differentiates Jacquet from other masters, while also retaining the full spectrum of expression on the horn. Awesome player.
  6. @JSngry so it’s Jacquet and not Tate correct? Or is it Tate? I have very little Jacquet listening experience but almost none of Tate. After listening again this song was the star of the BFT for me. The patience exhibited on the sax and the deep feeling in that playing is always welcome.
  7. Ok, got the files to work! @Dan Gould I dig the big band and the bass here. No idea who this is though. @DrJ the band is nice. The singer’s lyrics are like a pep talk I give to my foster dog who’s a scaredy cat on the leash. I’m tempted to put this on headphones for him. No guesses on who this is. @felser this comes across like a song from a Tyner Milestone album but I don’t think that’s the case here. I dig the tune. @JSngry jeez this sax player oozes feeling. What a voice on that instrument. Trumpet too. This is an excellent tune. Can’t wait to find out who it is. @Joe this sounds like a Blue Note track and one I should know but damn, no guesses. Great playing. @Ken Dryden I respect the hell out church organ players but I really don’t enjoy hearing them that much. To do what this person is doing takes some real skill. But like Richard Pryor used to joke, that organ makes me think Dracula’s going to jump out from the corner any second. @medjuck love the tune. No guesses but impressive stuff. @mikeweil night in Tunisia (doh! Not caravan lol) but no guesses on the players. I dig the breakdown with drums, piano and percussion. Definitely my favorite part of this track. @mjzee another good big band track on this BFT. No ideas here but I enjoyed listening to it. @tkeith the violin is a nice touch. I like what they’re all doing and this is a good listen. Wish I knew enough to guess who this is. Thanks guys!
  8. Love that a bunch of Seinfeld actors got utilized in that show. That’s Bookman, the library detective
  9. I’m in the US. Not freaking out about it lol I’m sure it will work eventually, somehow
  10. To me it’s similar to Seinfeld in that the early eps have their moments but the sweet spot had to develop. But if you’re a fan, then they’re all good.
  11. Shopping… Yep Roc records with a 10% discount code for bandcamp: UNCUTMAG not Jazz centric but I know interests vary here
  12. I can’t get these we transfer files to play with sound, even after downloading. Weird
  13. Bandcamp Friday is today 🍻
  14. Early episodes of Curb don’t hold up as well. If you start that show, I recommend the season where he starts out wearing the maga hat. I became reacquainted with Richard Lewis via Curb and am glad that happened. I was too young to appreciate him in the 80s and 90s. RIP
  15. Not many, and dare I say that the vocal tracks work - this coming from someone who doesn’t always enjoy jazz vocals.
  16. I'm on it. I got his Jazz Dance Suites a couple of years ago and it was a great album. His playing certainly remains top notch. I just saw where he played at the Kennedy Center in 2022 for the Mingus tribute. He should be one of the next honorees IMO.
  17. Dub Modal track: Track 4: The Count On Rush Street with Conte Candoli (tp), Art Pepper (as), Bob Cooper (ts), Shelley Manne (d), Bill Russo (tb, composer), Gene Esposito (p), Don Bagley (b); recorded 11/12/51 This is from the Savoy compilation CD Deep People that includes the original album ID'd by @JSngry in the thread. As noted, sound quality on this recording isn't great but I really like the playing and the composition. It was Pepper's solo that first caught my ear after a few times listening and made me sit up and really pay attention. Anyway, glad I included it b/c as mentioned in the main thread, the "Count" in this case is Conte which I didn't know, thinking it was a reference to Count Basie. This one got good remarks from most everyone and I'm glad you all enjoyed it. Thanks @Dan Gould for putting this very cool anniversary BFT idea together. Honored to create a this compilation with all contributors. BFTs are always a good way to experience some new music. Glad you put this track in here. Definitely love some UK jazz. Seems like really fertile ground in that scene these days and for the past few years really. This one's on my radar now. I would never have picked your track as being recorded in the 90s. Wow. I missed which track you selected though...which one was it?
  18. Did we discuss how we want to do the reveal? Guessing that will be posted tomorrow.

    Anthony Braxton

Thanks for the link. Definitely intrigued.
  20. I had the same sentiment on the sound quality when I first listened to this. I didn’t revisit it for a long time bc of that actually. Thought about getting rid of it too. Then at some point, it clicked for me. Jim ID’d the record it came from, but this is from the CD. No idea if the LP would sound better. All I can say is I’m glad I gave it multiple listens. Definitely wish someone would clean it up - if that’s even possible. Trumpet is Candoli btw. Alto is Pepper and tenor is Bob Cooper.
  21. Looks like the North Carolina Symphony didn’t get the memo https://www.ncsymphony.org/events/540/rhapsody-in-blue/
  22. The Chet Baker/Jack Sheldon seems like an odd choice. I guess Chet sells...? I noticed other records with these guys included a big band with Land, Pepper, etc. which seemed way more intriguing.
  23. This is a pretty good RSD for jazz fans.
