  1. There were two - one on Soul Note & then a live double album on Hat. I think they're both indispensable. The Soul Note had the WOW factor for me becuase it was first, and was therefore a big surprise (besides being truly WOW in every way), but the Hat has the distinction of having longer performances, which may or may not be an advantage depending on how you look at it, but you do get to hear the ideas stretched out more. I also prefer the Soul Note, but fore the exact reason that Jim mentions. It was the one I heard first. I do actually prefer the more succinct tracks to the extended performance on Hat a lot of the time. Thanks for the comments... I have the one on Black Saint (not Soul Note?), and need to get the Hat on order.
  2. I'm a (very) amateur drummer, and I've been attempting to transcribe parts of "Pent-Up House" and "Jordu". Max's drumming on those two tunes alone are enough for a lifetime of study. When I have someone who is serious about wanting to get into listening to jazz, the first thing I do for them is play "Effi" from 'Members' and tell them to concentrate on how the drums play off the bass pulse and everything else plays off the drums. I am totally unfamiliar with that record... I assume you're referring to "members, don't get weary" on Atlantic? (edited to add: nevermind... I see my question was already answered on the first page! :blush2:)
  3. Any thoughts on the Braxton/Roach record? I need to go back and listen again... it's been awhile.
  4. "a commercial for a financial product"? Not that "professional" help has been all that great for me lately, but it sure sounds like you should discuss this with somebody you, or somebody you know well, trusts -- personally.
  5. They're gone! After outcry, Time Warner uncaps the tubes

  7. Best of luck to you in getting this all sorted out, Al.
  8. Great photo of a bolt of lightening on it though--which was what hit me the first time I ever played Les Stances a Sophie. A very similar bolt of lightening hit me when I first heard "Snurdy McGurdy"!
  9. I'm often amazed by how much great live music we get here in our little corner of the world... As always, thanks for the datebook, Lazaro!
  10. Interesting observations, Peter... will go back and listen again. And it could very well be that the basic "rock" beat (combined with some elements of inside/outside jazz) is what I find interesting -- my tastes are not necessarily always demanding or sophisticated!
  11. I bought this box set shortly after listening to the "Rodcast" -- great stuff, no regrets. I was a little apprehensive that 12 CDs would be too much, but there really is quite a lot of variety, including on the repeated tunes. The packaging and booklet are first rate, somewhat similar to Mosaic sets. I also became a Rempis fan as a result of this set, but I'd also add that Tim Daisy does some great work here as well. And I really can't leave out Bishop and Kessler either -- that's the real strength of this music, very much a group effort.
  12. A Lobster Stronger than Itself: The History of Avant-Garde and Free Jazz on Maine Fishing Vessels, by Allen Lowe. **** apologies to George Lewis!
  13. Wish I was a little closer to Indy... Corey is outstanding! What's the format, Joe? Trio?
  14. I've been using VirtualBox for a few years now (running Linux under Windoze, as strange as that might sound!), and it works great. It's every bit as good (if not better) than similar commercial products.
  15. Comcast has a 250GB monthly cap now, after which you start getting whacked with extra charges or warnings that they'll close your account if the level of usage persists. I'd be interested to know how much bandwidth the Roku consumes, as one of the big concerns about the bandwidth cap is that it's going to be quite easy for those who stream decent-quality video on a regular basis to hit the cap. 250GB is a huge amount of data, even when streaming video is involved. This article estimates it would take 8 hours a day/7 days a week of (non-HD) streaming to hit Comcast's cap. Of course, that doesn't mean that Comcast's 250GB cap is reasonable. I'm paying for "unlimited" bandwidth, dammit!
  16. I very seldom have streaming issues. My internet connection is the standard Comcast cable; I think it's roughly 6Mbps. Roku appears to be buffering ahead quite a bit (as expected), and also has a "quality" indicator. Most of the time, ours is at highest quality, but I have seen it dial down automatically. Apparently, they deal with low bandwidth issues by reducing quality as needed.
  17. The "Where is 7/4? -- Haven't seem him posting much lately" thread
  18. Looks like listening to Sonny and Hawk with Chuck paid some rewards - a good thing. Yes! And the stuff with Don Cherry was also a revelation -- I didn't know that they had played together. Other than "The Bridge", this is all new to me. Looking forward to digging in!
  19. Sonny Rollins - Complete RCA Victor Box Set (used)
  20. Highly recommended -- this is a great set at a great price!
  21. Overall, I felt that the article was way too academic. ;) (just kidding, Allen... I thought it was a very nice article -- the first thing I read in that issue.)
  22. I guess I should have posted a couple of ;) (winky dinks?? )... I was (mostly) kidding around. Artistic conventions or not, I do see some (superficial) similarities. Sorry to bring back a bad memory!
  23. You must have been a pretty warped kid, to draw a picture of a hanging dog....
  24. Never really thought about it before, but this drawing immediately made me think of crap like this: Did Kinkade ("Painter of Light") learn his craft from Jon Gnagy?
