  1. The latest Conns are on sale ($13.95) at The Music Resource. Just ordered SONIC BOOM yesterday. B) RVG's are currently at $9.95; shipping prices seem reasonable. Also picked up discs from Cedar Walton and David Hazeltine -- both less than $14 -- comparable to prices at CDUniverse.
  2. That would be the "not worthy" one that was an attached image -- I guess I should have said the *attached* similie!! (now where's that :embarrased one when I need it??)
  3. The only bad thing about AB's avatars is that they change too quickly -- just about the time I've become used to his latest one, he comes up with one that's even funnier! We *really* need to have the following smilie on this board -- it's quite appropriate in this case:
  4. %53%63%72%65%77%20%62%69%6E%61%72%79%21%21 %55%73%65%20%48%65%78%20%69%6E%73%74%65%61%64%20%2D%2D%20%69%74%27%73%20%6D%75%63%68%20%73%68%6F%72%74%65%72%21%21
  5. There's 19 under his name, and also quite a few compilations. I managed to get five discs before things went to hell over there. Good luck getting them -- downloading is a joke.
  6. LMAO! Jazzbo's gets my vote for most scary!! I'm comin' to the party with my homies Lil' King G and Johnnie A. Fo' shizzle.
  7. Heck, GFR is only about 2 hours from Toledo!!
  8. Well, I'm not the first person in the “thirties” category, but it looks like I'm the second or third. Like many of you, my parents had varied interests in music; my father had some Brubeck stuff, Cannonball Adderley, Ramsey Lewis, Stan Getz, Cal Tjader, etc. Also was big into Sergio Mendez and Herb Alpert. Other records I heard a lot growing up included The Carpenters (!), Earth Wind and Fire, Burt Bacharach, Dionne Warwick. I was heavily in to rock and alternative in college (early REM, Cure, etc), and although I enjoyed KOB and others like it, I guess I just never “got it”. I also went through a blues period – B.B, Albert King, SRV, etc., -- but only listened to jazz very occasionally. What finally pushed me into more serious investigation of jazz was my guitar teacher's suggestion that I should work on some jazz tunes. I had been playing on and off for around ten years, and I had gotten very bored with playing the usual rock/blues stuff. He loaned me a copy of a Horace Silver CD, and that started it all. Not only has it completely reengerized my outlook and motivation for playing guitar, it also has started an obsession with jazz in general. My discovery of the RVG series came this summer at the Jamey Aebersold camp. I wanted to add to my collection, so I purchased eight of those, not really knowing the details of the series, or much at all about Blue Note in general. I guess I really can't describe it accurately, but hearing those old Blue Notes for the first time was nothing short of magical. It got me more excited about music that I had been for a very long time, and it hasn't worn off yet. Better late than never, I guess. After reading some of the other stories, I'm really regretting not taking Jazz Appreciation in college.
  9. AfricaBrass, your new and improved avatar just about made me spit coffee all over my monitor!!
  10. Not really - I sit in front of a computer most of the day, so I would just start a download, and check on it periodically. I was probably getting anywhere from 5 to 20 discs per day, less when things got really bad. In the last week or so, the downloading speed seems to have improved, and I queued up a bunch of Louis Armstrong and Bix cd's -- all of which usually contain 20+ songs per disc. The Hot 5's/Hot 7's set contains 89 songs over only 4 discs, so this certainly didn't help to keep my download count low. Looks like my total is 2,386 files, over a period of about seven weeks.
  11. I hope my account holds on long enough to get those Blakey and Dizzy discs. Just a few days ago, I got the emusic nastygram -- my account "has been identified as having download activity that far exceeds that of the overwhelming majority of subscribers". I was in no particular hurry to download massive amounts of stuff until the changes were announced. I've read that the "limit" of what was advertised as "unlimited" downloads is 2,000 per month. It looks like this is actually 2,000 in any 30-day period, as I never got close to that many in my first few months as a subscriber, including last month. It's great recommendations like these that remind me how truly sad it will be when things change in November. I'll probably quit before Nov 8th, unless they kick me off first. Then, I'll back up my entire collection on to 2 DVD+R's, and have enough music to keep me busy for a *long* time.
  12. That's a great story, AB. I just think it's hilarious how "the A word" is avoided as much as possible. I was also avoiding it as best I could -- and it sounds like it was much easier for me to say no to the invite. The gentleman (?) that invited me was, well, let's just say he was not well known for his high ethical standards in business. Plus, he knew that I "did something with computers" for a living, so it *must* be obvious to me that Quixtar would be a great opportunity. I also recall that he dropped a few big names as well, something about how how "Bill Gates" and Microsoft/IBM were "major investors" -- all of which was not true. I hate power point presentations on just about any subject -- I'm sure hours of Amway slides was quite painful!
  13. I just downloaded the demo version of Nero a few days ago -- and it looks like it was time limited to run during the month of October only. I think it would have expired on Oct 31. I ended up removing it, and went with an earlier version of "Nero Express" that came with the CD-RW drive. The Express version seems to have fewer features than the regular software, but it has work fine for me, so far.
  14. "Grand Fucking Rapids, MI"!! Like Chuck, I live *way* too close to the area that started all of this nonsense. I've been invited to a couple of meetings as well, usually held at the local country club (I suppose to give it an air of "success"); the purpose of the meeting is usually very vague, something like "Join us, unless you DON'T want to be successful!!". I've noticed that the word AMWAY is seldom ever directly mentioned -- in fact, I was invited to a QUIXTAR meeting a few years back, and when I asked it this had anything to do with Amway, I was told "Oh, no -- this is not Amway at all! It's an exciting new way to earn money using the power of the internet!!". Well, Quixtar is owned/run by one of the Amway founder's kids, and I believe it is actually a division of Amway (Alticor). Needless to say, the people that invited me don't seem to have retired on their Quixtar earnings yet. This site makes for entertaining reading: MLM Survivor By the way, it's NOT a pyramid scheme, it's MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING!!
  15. Thanks, ss1. These three are also on EMusic: The Charlie Byrd Christmas Album Rob McConnell and The Boss Brass Play The Jazz Classics Houston Person And Etta Jones, Together At Christmas
  16. ss1 - could you post the emusic cds you found? I've been looking for some good christmas tunes to download, but I haven't found much other than the Vince Guaraldi. Maybe I'll be able to download them, unless they kick me off first. I got the nastygram today -- my account "has been identified as having dowload activity that far exceeds that of the overwhelming majority of subscribers".
  17. How 'bout some Snap, Krackle, Finger Poppin??!!!
  18. Have I mentioned how much I don't like that band?? It's somewhat puzzling that while they had only one album, they appeared on fourteen compilations and soundtracks... I'm sure their place on VH1's "Where Are They Now: Annoying Bands from the 90's" is assured!
  19. I picked this one up, used, many years ago. Thinking it was probably going to be mostly crap, I was pleasantly surprised: If I Were a Carpenter: I was never a Carpenter's fan, but my parents used to play them on LP's back in the day, so many of these songs are permanently burned in to my brain. As sappy as they were sometimes, they did write some good songs. This tribute includes covers by Sonic Youth, Cracker, Concrete Blonde, The Cranberries, and Dishwalla. The covers by Matthew Sweet ("Let Me Be the One"), Grant Lee Buffalo ("We've Only Just Begun"), and Bettie Serveert ("For All We Know") are among my favorite tracks. By far, the worst track is Four Non Blondes cover of "Bless the Beasts and the Children". A bad song to begin with, made far worse by that truly awful band and lead singer. And if AMG likes it, it must be good!! Right??
  20. Things have been pretty bad here today, too. But, I did manage to get the three Gigi Gryce CD's this morning: Gigi Gryce And The Lab Quintet, The Hap'nin's, and The Rat Race Blues. Excellent stuff. I've found that when the DLM just sits there for a long time, saying "Connecting to Peer", or "Requesting File", cancelling that track, and then resuming it will sometimes get things going again. I'm attempting to get Sonny Stitt's "Soul Classic" now....
  21. I've been able to download quite a bit in the last two days, even with the timeouts and errors -- there doesn't seem to be any pattern to it, other than early in the morning (EST) seems to be the best time to download quickly and error-free. Here a couple of bulletin boards set up by fans, with some interesting commentary and gossip: Mixtape Forums: An EMusic Fan Site The Emusic Refugee's Forum
  22. Ah, the world is now (temporarily) safe again for all us evil SHIFT-key wielding jazz fanatics: Threat of lawsuit passes for student The black helicopters have turned around and gone home.
  23. Check this out -- the company that makes the MediaMax technology is going to "take legal action" against the Princeton student that wrote the paper: SunnComm CEO Says Princeton Report Critical of its MediaMax CD Copy Management Technology Contains Erroneous Assumptions and Conclusions Not only are they claiming violations of the DMCA, but also that a possible felony was committed because the author "admits that he disabled the driver in order to make an unprotected copy of the disc's contents". Keep those fingers off the SHIFT key guys -- and that thing I mentioned about turning off autorun permanently: ignore that, I just made that up. I really don't know what I'm talking about..
  24. If the record companies aren't deliberately trying to kill it, I'm sure they wouldn't be too sad about it. I think Emusic's (original) pricing, and the fact that they provided normal MP3 files without any restrictions would really irritate the big boys, especially as they are all trying to come up with new and novel ways of making people think that paying $1 per song for digital music (on their terms) is a good deal.
