  1. I love my android (HTC One x) but after a few months with it I'm pretty shocked at what a pain in the ass it's been to get all of the notifications working exactly like I want. The blackberry had settings to put everything on silence, vibrate, ring or ring + vibrate. Simple. I've spent quite a while trying to get my droid to do exactly that and am using multiple third party apps and it's still not quite right. And I went with a 3rd party text app to help with this and sometimes get double notifications, one from the 3rd party app and one from the native (AT&T) one. The droid is superior in almost every other way (compared to BB Torch) but it's amazing that I've had so much trouble doing something that seems so simple.

I went with Droid over iPhone because of lack of customization possibilities on the iPhone. I can do most of what I need to do with one click. I'd also never trade this screen for a smaller one.

A big factor with this Z10 should be how many of those droid apps get ported over. That's their only hope.

"Droid" is a marketing term used by Verizon for a line of their Android phones. If it's not on Verizon, it's not a "Droid".

It's really not that complicated to configure notifications. Sounds like you just need to set the native notification to on but with sound off, and then route all notification control through the other app.

  2. Zappa's synclavier music is definitely not "throwaway", as someone above put it. Civilization Phase 3 has some of most interesting compositions, a lot of which he wouldn't have even tried with real musicians.

I really like Trance-Fusion. Most of it is from the '88 tour, which featured some of this best guitar tone; the soloing sounds great, even when at times it isn't particularly interesting. I'd say his soloing from '88 was his best since the late 70s.

  3. The whole point of the Shut Up records was to feature FZ's guitar improvisations. And IMO, they stand up great on their own. You seem to be going through a bunch of Zappa recordings at a swift pace. Like I asked before, how much time have you spent listening to each piece of music?

As for Inca Roads, several different complete versions of the composition have been released. The guitar solo from Inca Roads on Vol. 2 is the one that was used in the studio version on the One Size Fits All album. It was edited for the album, but the full solo can be heard on the Helsinki concert.

To my ears, the Shut Up records were very carefully sequenced and edited, and they don't sound unstructured at all. Of course, it helps if you are already familiar with FZ's music when you come around to this set. And in the end, these records aren't going to have a very broad appeal. As FZ used to say, they are for guitar fetishists. But if you can forget about the guitar and focus on the musical content, there's plenty of inventive stuff here to enjoy.

You're exactly right. Shut Up... easily stands alone as a great record on its own, never mind some of the recycled material. Taken out of their original context, tunes like Inca Roads spun off a different tune altogether. And the guitar playing is obviously the highlight anyway. Project/Object!
