  1. The 43 is probably your best best to Cap Hill from Downtown. Here is a list of a few other routes that service that neighborhood: Seattle Metro Cap Hill Routes I forgot to mention a few other shops worth checking out in the lower Queen Anne Neighborhood. Easy Street Records and another CD Exchange type shop. I think Easy Street currently has their RVGs on sale for $7.99 as well as a pretty good jazz selection. To get their, take the 18 or 15 from 1st Ave heading North towards Ballard. It's a nice walk back to Downtown through the Belltown neighborhood--about a mile or so. Friday might be your best bet for Mariners tickets. Drop me an e-mail if you need any more info. Have a great time! Alejandro
  2. Interesting piece about Alice Coltrane that aired on the Sept. 23, 2004 broadcast of The Tavis Smiley show. Alice Coltrane: 'Translinear Light' Alejandro
  3. I've also been very happy with Netflix's service and selection. What I really enjoy is not getting in the car and driving to the video store only to spend hours combing the racks for a movie that wasn't a "Blockbuster" or that my wife and I could agree on renting. Also, like ejp626 if you're sent a defective DVD they'll send you a replacement hassle free. Whatever service you choose, I recommend renting the Sledgehammer series.
  4. Nothing wrong with country music, as long as it's pre-CMT. Another vote for the Louvin Brothers. Pick up When I Stop Dreaming: The Best of the Louvin Brothers ASAP. It's a great introduction to one of the greatest vocal groups ever! Watch out because this stuff is highly addictive...if you're not careful, pretty soon you'll be getting into the heavier stuff like Bluegrass or perhaps tomato wine.
  5. Hello Jacknife, Sent PM re: HORACE PARLAN - UP & DOWN (TOCJ-9098). Thanks! Alejandro

    Andy Bey

Another pro vote for Andy Bey. Not too interesting a story, but what the hell here goes: I was in San Francisco over the Labor Day weekend and happened to be walking past a club in the North Beach area and noticed that Andy Bey was sitting at the piano. Since it was about 1000 degrees, the windows were open and you could hear and see the legend clearly...pretty amazing. The people I was with didn't want to stop in, so I just stood there dumfounded for about a minute and then walked on. I should'a planned ahead! Latter that night I found myself staring at the street signs at the corner of Grant and Green. Pretty cool place, San Francisco.
  7. There are a few good shops close to Downtown in the Capitol Hill Neighborhood Everyday Music Address: 112 Broadway E Tele: (206) 568-3321 They have a pretty big selection of both new and used Jazz CDs and some Jazz LPs. CD or Disc Connection Address: Across the street from Everyday Music They Have a respectable used Jazz CD selection. Wall of Sound Address: 315 E Pine St, Seattle If you’re into more free/creative/experimental music this is the store for you. They sell both new and used CDs and LPs. I recommend checking this place out. Bud's Jazz Records Address: 102 S. Jackson St. Located in a basement on Jackson off of 1st Ave in the Pioneer Square area. Worth checking out, vinyl is a bit overpriced. Check out Elliot Bay Books while you're down there. Send me a PM or e-mail if you need any more information. Alejandro
  8. Hey Wolff, Name, rank, and serial number is all you’re getting. Seriously, I picked these up in the U-District. I occasionally stumble finds like this sandwiched between works by Glenn Campbell, Pantera, and Three Dog Night in the new arrivals mish mash. Any tips for LP hunting in the Bay Area? I heading down there soon and don't want to miss out on anything.
  9. Thaks for the info Rooster. Seems like a good time to pick up some more titles from Naxos American Classics Series.
  10. I know what you mean. I've already listened to the entire LP a few times tonight. For some reason I could never get into the CD version. My copy is BLP 4123 with a New York USA address. Exactly like the one in the following graphic--except for artist and issue info of course: I also scored a pretty scratched up and dirt encrusted copy of Lee Morgan's Cornbread (BST 84222 with a New York USA address) for $1.99. It seems like the previous, or original, owner didn't take too much care of his LPs. They're safe with me though.
  11. Kenny Burrell: Midnight Blue Just picked it up for $5.00...had to remove about an inch of dirt from the disc but hey it's a sweet payoff.
  12. AMG was pretty close. Here is the track listing as it appears on my copy of this album. Side One: 1. C.O.D (7:25) 2. Rainbows (8:56) Side Two: 1. New York (8:13) 2. Bells and Chimes (7:15) Hope this helps!
  13. So far this evening: Steve Kuhn/Gary McFarland: The October Suite Cannonball Adderley: Somethin' Else The Cecil Taylor Quartet: Air
  14. I been to Bud’s a few times over the past few years and had the same reaction. I don’t think they have much turnover. It’s a shame. Bop Street records in Ballard is another place that is way overpirced. Fortunately there are a few other stores in the Seattle area that occasionally have decent jazz selections at somewhat reasonable prices.
  15. Hello afj67, I did a quick search over at the vinyl asylum and found the following thread on Period records. Period Records Information From Vinyl Asylum It seems like most recordings on Period Records weren't of the highest technical quality. However, that being said it sounds like anything by Janos Starker on this label is worth getting. Currently listening to Bill Evans Trio: Bill Evans at Town Hall...Volume One Alejandro
  16. Freemont There are not many CD/vinyl shops in this neighborhood that is just a shadow of its former self—lots of overpriced clothing boutiques and trendy restaurants. Jive Time Records: Address: 3506 Fremont Ave N Tele: (206) 632-5483 Both CDs and vinyl, but a bit overpriced on the vinyl side though you can still find quite a few good deals there. The staff is also very nice and knowledgeable--If you’re into vinyl, check out the Antique Mall about and the newly added Vinyl Annex to Sonic Boom Records a block down from Jive Time Records. U-District There are also a few good CD and vinyl shops along University Ave N.E. Your best bet best is probably: Cellophane Square Address: 4539 University Way NE Tele: (206) 634-2280 If you hit them on the right day you can find some pretty cool stuff. The Jazz section is upstairs but you’ll also want to check out the new arrivals section. Tower Records Address: 4518 University Way NE Suite 100 Tele: (206) 632-1187 It’s a Tower…what more can you say. Their Jazz selection isn’t great but worth checking out. They also sell used CDs and vinyl. Al’s Music and Video Address: Across the street from Cellophane Square Lot’s of vinyl, CDs, and DVDs. A lot of Jazz vinyl, not in the best of shape, and a less than stellar Jazz CD selection. Though, it’s worth checking out even though you might not find anything. Second Time Around Address: About two blocks south of N.E. 45th on University Ave N.E. This store has pretty much the same feel and selection as Al’s. Again, it’s worth checking out if you’re in the neighborhood—I’ve found a few cool titles there over the years. Capitol Hill Hip neighborhood Everyday Music Address: 112 Broadway E Tele: (206) 568-3321 They have a pretty big selection of both new and used Jazz CDs but a not as big selection of Jazz LPs. Here are just a few stores. I’ll add some more tonight.

    Joe McPhee

Thanks for the info Joe! I plan on attending the show and am looking forward to the food as well...never been to the Swingside, but have heard great things. I'll have to make a reservation ASAP! See you there. Alejandro
  18. Thanks for the disc Nate I really enjoyed the music you selected and am also looking forward to the answers...I have some ideas but still need to spin the disc a few times before venturing any guesses. FWIW: On each track I’m hearing a lot of traditional and free musicians (and styles) intertwining and finding a way to get past their “differences” and create some great and innovative music. Again thanks!
