I ordered the Ellington vol. 1 from Popmarket in back in November, and although the status was "Available," it is still backordered with no expected shipping date.

The Ellington vol. 1 is showing up for order on Amazon Prime now for $60.20, Temporarily out of stock.  So maybe this is getting reprinted.

Just finished this, and am going to start Book 2 immediately.  I plowed through this book, couldn't stop reading it.  I was reluctant to start a 6-volume Norwegian memoir, but  I was completely engrossed in it.  From the “Hoarders-“ like fascination with cleaning the house after his father dies, to sneaking alcohol to a party in high school, to his love of books and music, this was exactly what I was in the mood to read.  Can’t recommend it enough!

If anyone needs Ellington vol. 1, popmarket still has it at a reasonable price. Looks to be out of print and it goes for silly money on amazon.

  5. These are the ones that have my attention at the moment. The Messiaen box is 6 discs for $36, not bad. The Bach Cantatas box is a whopping 22 discs for only about $52.00. The Ligeti box is 5 discs for about $30.

The Bach Cantatas box is now $41.99! I've been listening to this one a lot; a great way to pick up a nice chunk of Bach's vocal works.

  6. The dvd may not be remastered in anamorphic widescreen. Check the case and see if it says something like "remastered for 16x9 TVs." Most newer dvds are set up for this, but a lot of the older ones aren't, which means you get your movie boxed on all sides with black bars. Only using the 'zoom' function will help fill the screen, but the quality of the picture is degraded.

  7. Just finished Watchmen, and really enjoyed it.

Started Moby Dick yesterday, and I'm completely digging it. I've even laughed out loud a couple times. It's been one of those books on my list to read, but never have, and I'm not getting any younger. I was worried it would take forever to read, but I feel like I'm going to plow through it. I guess we'll see! I'll let you know when I finish it.

Also reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

Reading The Hobbit to my kids, and Kidnapped to my 10-year-old.

  8. There's a great book called 'The Secret House' by David Bodanis, that is full of electron microscope photos of everyday things around the house. After I saw these photos, I never used an electric shaver again. This one is a closeup of a hair cut with a straight razor:

I do trim my beard with an electric trimmer, though.

  9. Anybody else going to see the Brad Mehldau Trio next Sunday (4/27) at the Annenberg Center at Penn? I've never seen him live, and am looking forward to the show. Technically, I think he's a great pianist, and I really enjoy his Radiohead and Nick Drake covers.
