Recent purchases and trades plus a busy schedule led to a rather large back log that includes several Black Saint/Soul Note titles, Bob Marley deluxe editions (Catch a Fire and Rastaman Vibrations), and Japanese Herbie Hancocks (Piano and Trio '81). This is after a couple of days spent listening to seven titles arrived via the last trade I made over at BNBB. (I was surprised by how much I liked Alice Coltrane's Universal Consciousness ... Maybe I should think about investigating her Sepia Tone reissues).

No, that was The Soul of Ben Webster, which had Harry Edison's Gee Baby Ain't I Good to You, Johnny Hodges' Blues-A-Plenty, and the title album. There are three alternate takes from the sessions, including two that Mosaic failed to include when they put out the Hodges small group set.

I saw a copy of VME Soulville today and it has the same 10 tracks that appeared on the previous edition. The store actually had 4 copies of the old version and 1 of the new, all priced at $17.98.

Yeah, that vocalist sounds like he's auditioning for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy or something. Nothing special ... although these 30 second clips often do not tell the whole story.

Bonus tracks? Are there more than the three "Webster on piano" tracks that were on the previous issue? I'm tellin' ya these record companies ... I'd likely pass on this one, though.
