  1. Trying it right now. This is actually a really cool idea and well-executed. The opportunity to browse through the catalog chronologically, while showing all those old album covers, is something I really like. It's not perfect - much of the more obscure OOP material still hasn't been uploaded by EMI itself, so there are gaps and missing tracks (the John Hardee/Ike Quebec sides include only two cuts that were issued by some PD label). But huge props to whoever came up with a way to map all the albums to what's in the Spotify database. I don't know how much money this is going to make them but this is the kind of thing that makes me at least want to spend money on the CDs. Thanks Big Wheel. This was a project I lead. As longtime Blue Note addict and a digital nerd I took the opportunity to try to build the most engaging experience possible. Definitely a lot of gaps and I'm working w/ the EMI team that handles the feed into Spotify w/ regard to clearances and updates to the discography. I'm going to keep working to make this better and better. Comments are always welcome so please send them my way. Not sure if you saw the Rolling Stone and LA Times articles but so far, the reviews have been positive. Thanks for giving it a spin. http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/blogs/gear-up/blue-note-records-spotify-app-streamlines-jazz-discovery-20120912 http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/arts/culture/la-et-cm-blue-note-jazz-spotify-app-20120912,0,689551.story
  2. Anyone know where I can find a copy of this record? Heard it once and really dug it.
  3. Hey everyone, It's been a while since I've posted here so sorry for the long absence. I'm not sure if this is the right topic to post this thread but it got me to thinking - perhaps alter the subject of this topic to "Jazz In Print And On The Web." Anyway just a thought. Ok down to business. I'm currently working with several developers on concepts for Blue Note iOS apps and I thought what better place to harvest feedback and suggestions than the Organissimo board? The backbone of the project is powered by the data EMI has supplied to The Echo Nest who have assembled a API that devs can use to build applications. Currently there are thousands of tracks (and album art) available (i.e. everything that is available digitally via EMI's digital supply chain) and I've spoken w/ Michael Cuscuna about the use of the Wolff photos and the discography data. Altogether this is a very powerful data set that gives developers the freedom to build some compelling experiences. Some back of the napkin ideas are top 50 / top 100 tracks / albums or perhaps something that follows the interrelated paths of certain players - think Spellman's Four Lives in the Bebop Business but with a more cross-pollinated thread, i.e. Mobley -> Coltrane -> Chambers -> Clark and how they crossed paths through the years across sessions. I realize I'm not being broad here and only using a very small pocket of years but I hope you get the idea. My hope is that the end result will be the best virtual coffee table book that represents the legacy of the Blue Note label and is both engaging for the purist as well as the newcomer. This is the most knowledgable collective of jazz connoisseurs on the internet and I wouldn't consider going anywhere else with this info. I welcome your ideas, feedback and suggestions. Please post them here or, if you want to reach out to me directly you can send me a email @ walter.gross@emimusic.com Thank you, Walter Gross aka bluesForBartok Facebook Twitter - @walterisgross http://gplus.to/waltergross

I can follow up here or via PM with the actual titles. BFB
  6. Great night of music led by Randy Weston with a all-star band that included Candido, Eddie Henderson and James Spaulding among many others.

  7. Your interview is indexed in the References section of the book Fantastic thanks for checking Brownie!
  8. Thanks. I just ordered it anyway. I remember when it was in limbo for such a long time and I didn't actually know it had finally been released until a few days ago. Clearly I've been living in a cave of something.
  9. I'm going to be purchasing the Chambers / Twardzik book very soon but I'm wondering if anyone who has the book already can tell me if Jack Chambers cited my interview with Herb Pomeroy from AFM Local 9-535's 1998 July-August-September issue [A Many Splendored Life: A Conversation with Herb Pomeroy by Walter Gross]. I had been in contact w/ Chambers while he was working on the book and I sent him over a copy of the article but I never had any follow up with him to see if he actually used any of my interview. Thanks in advance!
  10. Thanks so much NIS! I'm gonna dive into the Denman Maroney recording next. So the Denman Maroney is really great. Thanks again for recommendation. I also discovered this title by the Trespass Trio which I really dug as well.
  11. Thanks so much NIS! I'm gonna dive into the Denman Maroney recording next.
  12. Just checking out the new one from Daniel Levin - Live At Roulette and it sounds mighty fine. In fact, all of the titles from the Clean Feed label look pretty interesting. Any of you have any knowledge of these titles or artists?
  13. Thanks all for posting all of these titles. Listening to the Christian McBride now and digging it. However I'm really looking forward to listening to some of the artists I'm not familiar with. The beauty of discovering new music is something I never tire of. BTW the new Louis Sclavis release Lost On The Way is pretty nice if you haven't heard.
  14. I'd be interested in following any / all from this forum that are on Lala. Please post your handle here or follow me - http://www.lala.com/#member/44726@27407 Looking forward to seeing you over there

  16. Thanks to all so far for taking the quiz. I'm starting to wonder if this crowd is finding the questions tough, perhaps a person w/ average knowledge of BN is probably not going to do well at all. JSngry - Sorry but we didn't make a version that lives outside of the "walled garden" that is facebook. If you like I'll gladly send you the doc of questions / answers that we used for the quiz. Just shoot me a PM if you're interested. By no means would I try to pimp FB on anyone but I gotta say it's pretty cool for reconnecting w/ old friends and networking w/ new ones. Unlike MySpace (the online equivalent of a bad neighborhood), all of the relationships and people you connect with are genuine. There is a little bit of the spam factor but it's pretty well controlled. btw thanks for the shout out Dan. GO SOX!!! Bertrand - yes I used to work for Sickler @ SFM. Boy that's going on 10 years ago now... I saw Don recently at a Blue Note event and he was as charming as ever.
  17. Greetings, I've not posted here in long time so at first glance this may seem like spam. It is not. I'm a web developer for EMI (and a passionate blue note fan of many years) and I just launched a Blue Note quiz on Facebook. You can find it here. For those of you w/ FB accounts I hope you take the quiz and I look forward to your comments. Some of the questions will be painfully obvious to a lot of you here but I hope that you will find some of the questions challenging. I dug pretty deep including pulling some information from Ashley Kahn's forthcoming book. BTW I thought the Artist forum was the best place to post this but if the admin finds that this post is not in the right place / forum on the BB please feel free to move. Again I look forward to your comments and look for me on FB. Walter Gross aka bluesForBartok
  18. Current score in Anaheim is Angels 12 - Yankees 5. If the Angels pitching can hold up we'll be up 6 games after tonight.
  19. I wouldn't go so far as to compare the 2007 Red Sox to the '78 team. It's a different set of circumstances altogether. As long as the Skankees keep digging into those deep pockets they are always going to be in contention for years to come so it's really no surprise they are on the heels of the Sox. Even Fitzy is in a panic Whether or not they knock the Red Sox out of the playoffs remains to be seen and if they do I'm ready to get behind whatever team takes them down.
  20. Anyone see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woKJX_gyrds? Classic Red "Sawx" bleacher creature.
  21. Here's the Andrew Hill cover for those who are curioius:
  22. Desperate times call for desperate measures I suppose.
  23. Even Peter Green doesn't play like Peter Green anymore. I agree that price tag is just ridiculous and it's sad to think it may be purchased only to end up in someones private collection never to see the light of day again. It really should be in a museum considering it's historical importance. Even better if it was given back to PG.
  24. Oh what I'd give to get my hands on this beauty.
  25. Yes and it replicates a classic gatefold album and includes a few marijuana seeds as a bonus!
