  1. I first heard Sam Rivers on Dave Holland's Conference of the Birds. That LP blows me away to this day. Wonderful concept and exciting writing.
  2. I worked with Wolfgang when I was living in Munich. We played some duo things at a little club called Jenny's Place. He also is a drummer btw. And not a bad one either! I believe he is still living in Bavaria. He is quite a producer as well. He has organized all star bands many times. He also teaches a lot. I had the chance to join in on one of these bands at a festival in the mid-80s. He had Santo DiBriani (sp?), Billy Hart, Kenny Wheeler and a couple of other guys whose names escape me at the moment. It was an honor to stand next to Mr Wheeler. This is off topic I know, but I consider him to be one of the best brass improvising artists ever. Amazing control and a phenomenal ear. I exchanged emails with Wolfgang awhile back. If there is anything you want to know, please pass it on and I will send it to him. Greg
  3. Agreed on all points! He was a terrific writer. I did get to see him in person one time. Your mention of his tenure with Dizzy reminded me. They came down in the late 80s to play at the now defunct Caravan of Dreams. That night a very young ROy Hargrove dropped in and sat in on a couple of tunes. I remember how nervous he was!
  4. I know that she is considered one the beauties/femme fatales of Hollywood (at one time?) but she always gave me the creeps. No doubt she was a tremendously talented actress though. Maybe it has to do with the roles she played later in her career - like Baby Jane and her part in "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte". I have since of course seen many of her older B&W films made when she was much younger, and she was marginally attractive (imo). But later in life, I don't think so. All that makeup and those trade mark Betty Davis eyes. No thanks! Brrrrrrr!!
  5. While I was surfing around on Youtube, I eventually came across recordings by the late Joseph Spence. He was mentioned in an interview with James Taylor, in which James cites Ry Cooder as an influence, and as a side note he mentioned that Ry got a lot of influence from James. Worth checking out. He definitely has that floating time signature thing going on with his blues form as do many of the early blues guitarists, but that comes with the territory and it doesn't spoil a thing for me. He plays pretty much in a drop D tuning only. Self taught, but he really has a lot to say. Definitely recommended if you haven't already heard of him!
  6. Opinions on this record? I have had the vinyl for many years and I like it. Perhaps it isn't considered "essential" (whatever the hell that means), but it kind of fills in the gap in the tenor lineage of the quintet, having Sam just before Wayne. I have heard anecdotes regarding how Miles, Ron, Tony and Herbie felt about Sam's playing etc. I wonder how many are true. Edit: I will say that I love Sam's playing and especially his writing. I wish I'd had the opportunity to hear him in person on one of my trips to Florida over the years. I did however get to work in a quintet on occasion with his bass player for many years up to the end (Doug Matthews) He told me many great stories about working with Sam.
  7. Nice! Glad you got to see/hear him live! Should have been 7,000 instead of 70. And so it goes.
  8. I read that a remake of "whataver happened to sweet baby jane?" is being discussed. The director would be Walter Hill. Reading the article got me to thinking. What two female actresses would be best for those roles?| Ideas? Tough call. Meryl Streep as the psycho Jane? She could pull it off and you know it would be interesting. Glenn Close? Probably not. Who'd play Blanche?

  10. I hope this link to facebook works. I was unable to post the original pic itself, Amazing glimpse into music history! Mumbles; he certainly hung with heavy company!! http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151195462920817&set=a.115525845816.105118.596895816&type=1
  11. Looking to go hear some live music tonight (july 4th) while in Jax. Any suggestions for clubs etc. No piano bars or karaoke please!
  12. That one I have! I forgot he was in the band. Time to dig it out.
  13. I have several of the GUO releases, but not that one. I will be on the lookout. Did he ever record and/or perform with Carla Bley's units? I am sure he ran into her on the GUO.
  14. Meanwhile back at the ranch...... In thursday's Dallas Morning News there was an interesting column, discussing Sandusky's wife Dottie. It is pretty bizarre how she stands by her man throughout this whole tawdry affair, emphatically denying that she heard nothing, no screams etc coming from 'downstairs' where good old Jerry went to tuck in his house guests. It is asserted in some circles that she herself should be in a cell of her own. She is almost as culpable as Jerry. She had to have known this creep's predilections. Okay, I said this as classy as I could.
  15. I love you tube! An interview with Enrico (there appears to be others on youtube as well) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiG0k-mhyao
  16. Wow. I must be blind. Thanks I wanted to add that I just picked up a Roland JC 90, one of the smaller versions of the huge JC 120. I used to have the big brother. but it was way more amp than I would ever need. Set at 4, the amp would rattle window panes in the house. A true arena amp classic. I sold it but began to miss that classic clean chorus. The 90 is a nice compromise. With two 10"s in it, and rated at 80 watts (40 x 40 stereo) it sounds great. And it weighs a helluva lot less, yet still has casters. Nice design. Why it isn't named JC -80 escapes me.
  17. Just wondering. Was it deleted, or am I just unable to find it?
  18. I was at that show. The Black Saint/Soul Note box is a no brainer for any Rava fan who doesn't already own the material. I love Rava. I first saw him ca. 1976 with Rudd & Hod O'Brien at the club they ran, St. James Infirmary. Sheila Jordan may have been there the same night. Okay, I am officially jealous!!
  19. Any Pauly Shore movie. Dumb and Dumber Something About Amy Most Ben Stiller movies
  20. Are there any fellow Enrico Rava fans in here? I have been checking out his releases ever since discovering him via his ECM quartet date with Roswell Rudd. He has his range limitations true, but his tone and melodicism really reaches me. In some ways he reminds me of Miles. At this point I have several CDs and LPs of his (and others on which he is a sideman) and am always on the prowl for additional ones I haven't yet heard. One of my favorites is his Italian Ballads CD. Beautiful. I love the use of the accordian on this date.
