  1. It was meant as a joke. See, there's this thing called irony, where you say the opposite of what you mean in order to......never mind. There's no such language as "Andorran." In Andorra, they speak Catalan. ← Hi JPF I probably should have planted a few smilies here and there. I knew you were being ironic and I also know that there's no "Andorran" language (been to the place, actually). Funnily enough I was trying to be ironic too when I said "Andorran"... All the best, F
  2. Oh yes it does... or perhaps it doesn't in *Andorran*. This happened before with the *complete* recordings of Hal McKusick with Barry Galbraith, Milt Hinton and Osie Johnson, they missed Lydian Lullaby, The Day John Brown Was Hanged and Miss Clara from McKusick's "Jazz Workshop". Besides, the sticker on that one said "Collectors' items on CD for the first time ever", so forget about having ever seen the following CDs - Hal McKusick: East Coast Series No. 8 (Bethlehem/Fresh Sound FSR-CD41, Spain 1989) - Hal McKusick: In A Twentieth Century Drawing Room (RCA/BMG 74321125842, Spain 1996) - Hal McKusick: The Jazz Workshop (RCA/BMG 74321913522, Spain 2001) - Hal McKusick: Jazz At The Academy (Coral/Universal UCCC-9064, Japan 2003) and also - V. A.: The RCA Victor Jazz Workshop/The Arrangers (Bluebird/BMG ND 86471, Germany 1989), which has five tracks from McKusick's Workshop album. There, you needn't even bother with legal niceties. F
  3. The fact is that we'll have to wait, because LoneHill keep misunderstanding the meaning of *complete* as in *complete fifties studio recordings* (even accepting that only one of the sessions in the Columbia LP is by a quintet). This is what's included in the LoneHill reissue 4 Complete Albums On 2 CDs! - Trombone For Two! (Columbia, 1955) - “Nuf Said”! (Bethlehem, 1955) - Jay & Kai Quintet! (Prestige, 1954) - Jay And Kai! (Savoy, 1954) Tracklisting: CD-1 1. Blues for trombones 2. What is this thing called love 3. Lament 4. The Major 5. Bernie's tune 6. Reflections 7. Co-op 8. Blues in two's 9. The whiffenpoof song 10. Give me the single life 11. Close as pages in bool 12. Turnabout 13. Trombone for two 14. It's sand, man 15. We two 16. Let's get away from it all 17. Goodbye 18. This can't be love CD-2 1. Out of this world 2. Thou swell 3. Lover 4. Lope city 5. Stolen bass 6. It's alright with me 7. Mad about the boy 8. Yes Sir, that's my baby 9. That's how I feel about you 10. Gong rock 11. It's alright with me (alt.take) 12. Don't argue 13. How long has this been going on 14. Riviera 15. Dinner for one 16. Hip bones 17. Wind bag 18. We'll be together again 19. Bag's groove No trace of the music included in Columbia's "Jay and Kai" then. F
  4. The small quota of Spaniards around here will agree that reedman Ralph LaPolla had quite a name. F
  5. That means that YOU have completed and corrected the discography, right? Congrats and looking forward to some interesting Christmas reading (that defence of Bebop written in the 50s in Spain, now THAT has to be interesting - an old friend who had a jazz radio programme in the early 50s told me that he was banned from playing Satchmo's singing; apparently Mario Lanza was da man!) F
  6. Not me (yet). Only reviews I've found are in French Citizen Jazz Irma Asso Radio France Guitare Jazz F
  7. I also have some Sony/Mainstream reissues, but Time Records Inc are the current owners of the Time, Mainstream and Sittin' In With catalogs. Their main output nowadays is iTunes. www.timerecordsinc.com www.mainstreamrecords.com F
  8. RE Time Records/Mainstream: I don't have more details on this, but Mainstream reissued some LPs originally on Time F
  9. "... people will say we're in love..."
  10. Three nice pictures of this session here What a line-up! (although the Lester-Christian combination perhaps worked better in Spirituals To Swing 1939) F
  11. Thanks EKE and Brownie. I actually tried (like a couple of years ago) to get it from soundcity2000 and there was no response at all. F PS The October 1957 track mentioned by Lords is "Taking A Chance On Love", by Pettiford, Eddie Costa and Ed Thigpen, very possibly a left-over from the Bethlehem Winner's Circle session, subsequently included in the Discoveries LP.
  12. Thanks, Pete. I also think that my two sightings are just mistakes. F
  13. Hello Could anybody confirm whether the LP Oscar Pettiford - Discoveries (SJL 1172) has ever been reissued on CD? I read a review in the Penguin Guide To Jazz (4th ed., I think, the one with Getz and Ray Brown on the cover), but as far as I can remember the CD catalogue number was wrong. I have also seen an overpriced copy listed for sale in gemm.com, but the seller (Argentinian) didn't have in stock anyway. The Allmusic reviewer says he wishes it will be reissued on CD someday. Thanks in advance. F
  14. Hi The "Jewells" CD (SV-0273) has exactly the same music, 26 tracks, as the double LP (SJL 2250), no? Maybe you're comparing "Jewells" to "Boyd Meets Stravinsky" (LP-Savoy MG12040/CD-SV 0185), only 12 tracks, true, but including "Interlude" (first-ever big band recording of A Night In Tunisia), "Summertime" and "March of the Boyds", with Dizzy and Benny Harris; Trummy Young; Bothwell, Hal McKusick, Al Cohn and Serge Chaloff; Oscar Pettiford and Shelly Manne. And I agree re Savoy, who can we stalk to get a set like the recent Red Norvo and Billy Eckstine? F
  15. Just wanted to chime in on this... definitely buy this Okratone release! It's great, with Wolff photos, very nice presentation! Funnily enough (well, not really), Gambit releases carry a sticker boasting that they're "for the discerning collector". F
  16. That must be the one including Jones's "Gigi" and "Here's Love". Watch out for the follow-up (just out): "Hank Jones Quartet With Kenny Burrell And Barry Galbraith - Complete Recordings, vol. 2". It includes the albums "The Talented Touch" and "Porgy And Bess" Yep, exactly like last year's Mighty Quinn's Okra-Tone reissue (approved by EMI, current owner of the masters). F
  17. Mainstream was one of the many ventures of record producer Bob Shad, who also started Emarcy in the fifties (as part of Mercury records) and Time (as an independent, see thread) in 1960, a. o. Current owners (if I'm not mistaken) can be contacted thru Time Records Inc As for the length of the albums, they're on the short side, but not that unusual for those years? F
  18. In http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=2101 Not really. Like contemporaries Dick Wilson (if I'm not mistaken) and Jimmie Blanton, Christian died of TB. Didn't Paul Desmond, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims and Al Cohn all die of lung cancer? F
  19. Not really. Atzmon started out playing bebop. I spoke to him a few months ago and he seemed to know his Bird and his Cannonball, so this could be an interesting gig: Stewart is a formidable guitarist and Atzmon has a beautiful tone on alto. Looking forward to it. F
  20. In case it helps, the current owners of Time Records are reachable via their website (as far as I know they are involved with iTunes and the Japanese CD reissues). Time Records Inc F
  21. I caught Claxton a few hours ago completely by chance at Foyles in London's Charing Cross Road. The book is bigger and heavier than Jazz Seen (the box even has a handle!) F
  22. Hello Mike, Is that definitive? According to Peter Ind's Jazz Visions, George Wein invited Bird to join Lee Konitz's quartet (Konitz, Ronnie Ball, Ind and Jeff Morton), who were having a long residency at Storyville. That would've been a curious two-alto gig. Were Woods and Quill already gigging at that time? F

Hola You may want to add this to your list F
  24. The geographical connection is not so far off-mark. Costa was in California in the National Guard before he was posted to Korea c. 1950. Although he had already played professionally in the East, apparently it was in California when he was introduced to the music of Bud Powell. In any case, he was in a military band and he did meet Californian jazz musicians. F
