    Teddy Charles

I don't know if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but there is an official CD reissue of Three for Duke. By Japanese WMG. First one ever, as far as I know. http://wmg.jp/sp/artist/teddycharlestrio/WPCR000029085.html F
  2. A bit more of information about the end of Harold Moore's. https://thevinylfactory.com/features/harold-moores-london-lassical-record-shop/ F
  3. Al Grey indeed. This may or may not be entirely correct: https://www.loc.gov/item/jots.200013962/ F
  4. Sorry to report that Harold Moore's is gone. I only learned about this last Saturday, but apparently it's been closed for a few weeks. I've read on FB that this was done without notice, not even to the staff. That's all I know. F
  5. I've edited the first post to correct a link and to add two more for the 5-CD sets (there are a few additions, both from the Concord and Blue Note vaults) and the new 3-CD sets respectively (I don't think those are worth listing thoroughly). F
  6. Amazon.fr has a few Universal boxes (LP facsimiles, no booklets as far as I can remember) with the complete studio recordings of several artists. They carry 10+ CDs and they go for €30. Artists include Brassens, Brel, Moustaki, Leo Ferré, Jean Ferrat, Barbara, Gainsbourg, etc... F
  7. Have they done anything at all with the stuff they've had for two years? F
  8. How does that fit with Concord having bought the label two years ago, I wonder. F
  9. Welcome to London, Bol! Besides what Sidewinder said, Harold Moore's in Great Marlborough St is worth a visit for their second-hand jazz CDs and LPs downstairs. F
  10. Yesterday I got an alert email from Amazon related to the Impulse 50 box. Alas, it's a new 25-CD box (1961-1974), most (all?) of it available at some point as single CDs. By the look of it, it's based on the original 50-CD project. Info, here. Cheapest price I've seen, on Amazon.de This is how it compares with the original 50-CD set. 11. Looks like it's from a Bill Savory acetate: https://jazzlives.wordpress.com/2013/08/28/a-few-beautiful-seconds-of-lester-young-on-clarinet-the-famous-door-1938/ F
  12. He does, most notably on four tracks from the Count Basie/Joe Williams Roulette LP Memories Ad Lib. I blogged about this some time ago (here) and also built a Spotify playlist of Freddie Green's solos. F
  13. IMHO, Lester's solo on the alternative take of Lady Be Good is less coherent and fluid than the master (takes went unreleased for a reason). He seems less assertive than on the master, although this impression may be due to having listened to the master so many times that I've memorized it. Interestingly, he seems to stick to the same ideas for the bridge, and his playing on the bridge of the second chorus is the bit most similar to the released take. F
  14. It seems that Universal has finally jumped on the 5-CD set bandwagon started by WEA and followed by Sony (or vice versa?). They've released eight such sets, which are listed at the end of post #1 of this thread, since they seem to come from the Italian branch of the label. You can also see those, here. F
  15. Names & Numbers released a Capitol Discography by Michel Ruppli (and Cuscuna?) on CD-ROM some years ago. I guess that's the most reliable source you can get for Nat King Cole. F
  16. I've asked at Hoffman's forums and the errors seem to be universal (). Someone suggested ripping the DVD with DVD-Shrink. F
  17. Hello CD9, #6: yes, there's some digital skipping from 1:07 to 1:15 (loudest at 1:15) , of the kind you get when the disk or the lens are not clean. My disk is clean, but it has a tiny black spot embedded in the plastic (definitely not external surface). DVD 2: yes, mine jumps back to the main menu when the film is at 1:19:01, when Cole says "... at home, and that coun[cut]". Bugger. F
  18. I got my Grant in an HMV sale when those were worth skipping a morning at work. I don't think it's a CD-R, and it was an unlikely boot, given that it was published by BMG (their New Zealand division all right, but still). As Ken said, a bit of an ego-trip by Grant, that one. F
  19. I just put a review of this up in my blog. Regarding the differences between Grant 1997 and Resonance 2016, the takes of the following included in the Grant are not in the Resonance: All My Yesterdays Low Down Willow Weep for Me There are some other minor things. although generally the sound is better in the Resonance (fuller, better mixed). Nothing's lost if you don't have the Grant, IMHO, except for Thad Jones's solo on "Willow..." which I prefer over the one on the Resonance. F
  20. Got it from Amazon.de for €54.36 (regular, cheapest shipping inc.). I ordered it on the 28th at 21:38 and got it in London on the 29th at 11:50. That's under 15 hours delivery time. PS Haven´t opened it yet, but it looks great. There's either not too much promo about it, or I have completely missed it.
  21. That would have been a good one, with some stuff never before issued on CD. It's only four years to the 60th anniversary anyway. F
  22. Spanish papers report that Toussaint died last night in Madrid, Spain, after his gig at Teatro Lara. He felt unwell and had two consecutive heart attacks. He died at Hospital Fundación Jiménez Díaz. Diario El Mundo (in Spanish). F
  23. Is that list in the chronological order of the recording dates? I've put the albums in the same order as they come in the box according to the Italian site, but yes, they were recorded in that order too according to this. F PS: According to Wikipedia, they were also released in that order, except Moto Grosso Feio, which came out after Odyssey... Etcetera and Soothsayer weren't released until years later. Another box that will be redundant for most of us. Note that the Shorter box only carries a thin booklet with no liner notes, only discography and tiny reproductions of original LP covers. F
