  1. Yep. You can find more info from the "Black Rhythm Happening" thread here at this forum. Or you could point your browser at the GroovExperience website. Click "Les rééditions GrooveMasters" for a complete listing and sound samples.
  2. Wow. I'm intrigued. Haven't heard it, but I sure would like to! $30 does seem quite pricey, though.
  3. Easy, easy, people... I'd reconsider getting that Mouzon disc... Have you actually heard it? Mouzon was (is) a great drummer and played on some classic groove dates (Hancock's for example) but Mind Transplant is a very guitar-heavy session, almost rock. I just recently listened to the LP for the first time and it wasn't really my bag. Although AMG has given it a cool 4,5 stars. How about those two Grant Greens? Has anyone heard 'em? Carryin' On was reissued as a Rare Groove and The Final Countdown was supposedly a soundtrack (??).
  4. Check out the GroovExperience website (flash plug-in required). Click "Les rééditions GrooveMasters" once you get in. There's the list of all the reissues, complete with sound samples.
  5. I guess I could also post this to the "music related d'oh" thread, but here it is... Being the Hancock aficionado that I am, I once spent some dough on this CD. It's supposedly a "cult" album by some Japanese singer Kimiko Kasai - although I'm not sure if the cult classic status should be considered as a negative or a positive thing. I've seen people pay ridiculous amounts for the original LP. I realized that it was recorded in the late 70s, so some disco was to be expected. Nevertheless, I thought - hey - there's some nice tunes in there, like Stevie Wonder's "As" and Herbie's "Tell Me A Bedtime Story" from Fat Albert Rotunda and "Butterfly" - let's give it a go, it can't be all bad. Boy was I wrong. Probably one of the worst efforts Hancock was ever involved in. Ms. Kasai pronounces the (English) lyrics - hmmm, shall we say - in a very "Japanese" manner and on some tunes (like "As") it sounds absolutely awful and quite amusing, to say the least. And I'm not quite impressed with a lyric like "Tell me a bedtime story, daddy". She tries to scat and improvise on a few tunes and fails miserably. How did she think she could scat when she's having trouble even singing in tune? The various modulations of "Sunlight" were too much for her. Or the whole of "Maiden Voyage", for that matter. The band plays great, obviously, and probably were paid a significant amount of $$$ for their effort.
  6. 'Aja' is their finest hour but I also enjoy 'Gaucho', 'Two Against Nature' and to a lesser extent, 'Katy Lied'. Any word on the next album yet? I was just watching the Two Against Nature concert DVD the other day, "Steely Dan's Plush TV Jazz-Rock Party In Sensuous Surround Sound". Phew! Dig the pompous title . The concert's excellent. They play tracks from 2AN plus "hits" like Josie, FM, Peg, Bad Sneakers. It's a thirteen-piece band with Chris Potter on 2nd sax, for example. In between the tracks there's some footage of rehearsal's and interviews. There's also mock-up "talk show" segments which are hilarious! Becker & Fagen "interview" fellow band members and display their witty humour to the fullest. I just wish the camera would've shot the background singers more - they are fine!
  7. I've been so turned off by the covers that I haven't really paid any attention to these. By the looks of it, though, it seems there's some greasy stuff in those! Which ones should I get?
  8. I totally agree, Jim. I just recently got the 'In Concert, Vol 1' on vinyl and there's some special moments there, that's for sure! I also share your point of view about Laws - I never quite subscribed to the whole "afro-classic" direction he pursued on his 70's albums. I haven't heard 'Fingers', though. AMG gives it a cool 4 1/2 stars. What's it like? It includes at least his hit, "Tombo in 7/4"...
  9. I posted this on "that other board" but I thought I'd post it here as well, since some of these seem quite interesting. - Freddie Hubbard & Stanley Turrentine: In Concert, Vol. 1 - Freddie Hubbard & Stanley Turrentine: In Concert, Vol. 2 - Hubert Laws: San Francisco Concert - Hubert Laws: At Carnegie Hall 1973 - Hubert Laws: Afro-Classic - Ron Carter: Yellow & Green - Airto Moreira: Fingers - Freddie Hubbard: Sky Dive - Freddie Hubbard: First Light - CTI All-Stars: CTI At The Hollywood Bowl 1-3 - Gerry Mulligan & Chet Baker: Carnegie Hall Concert 1 / 2 There are a few others as well, I think George Benson's "Body Talk" is one. Most of these are released in late April, but Dusty Groove already has at least Laws' "Carnegie Hall" and "Afro-Classic" and the CTI All-Stars disc.
  10. Are we talking pianists with "legendary" status or just pianists who are alive and well? Anywhooo here's my current favs list (although it changes on a weekly basis). Basic stuff, really - but these guys are the best. 1. Herbie Hancock 2. Chick Corea 3. Brad Mehldau 4. McCoy Tyner 5. Keith Jarrett
  11. It surfaces now and then on eBay and at quite reasonable prices, actually. Haven't had a chance to acquire it yet, though. Hey Jim Dye - I sure would like to have that album. Maybe you could trade it for something (mp3s)?
