  2. Understood! Both shows were excellent but sometimes there are other things one has to do!
  3. Posting this here for interested parties: In just a few weeks, on Sunday May 5, SWDYT? returns with a powerhouse meeting of minds/limbs/breath: saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee, a hometown hero of sorts since he's been active in nearby Poughkeepsie & worldwide since the tail end of the '60s, will be joining The Ghost, a NYC/Philly trio featuring saxophonist Michael Foster, bassist John Moran, and drummer Joey Sullivan (the latter two are also in Bark Culture with vibraphonist Victor Vieira-Branco, more on them another time). A few additional words on The Ghost from the ol' Bandcamp: The Ghost was formed by saxophonist Michael Foster as both a tribute to his disparate influences in free jazz, harsh noise, and the gay underground community, and as a middle finger to the suffocating heteronormative establishment of improvised music. Their new CD "Vanished Pleasures" stands as a new direction for this project, utilizing overt compositional frameworks to convey the anxieties of aging, sexual freedom, and the power relations inherent in the sax-bass-drums format. And for further context, here is an interview I did with Joe back in 2012: https://www.cliffordallen.me/interviews/an-interview-with-multi-instrumentalist-joe-mcphee McPhee has played Tubby's on a couple of occasions, once with Ballister (Dave Rempis/Fred Lonberg-Holm/Paal Nilssen-Love), and also joining Detroit post-punk outfit Protomartyr for their sold-out shows. Wild, right? I've had the distinct pleasure of presenting Foster at Tubby's and in NYC: Queer Trash/The New York Review Of Cocksucking; in a trio with Lonberg-Holm and percussionist Matt Weston; and in trio with cellist Leila Bordreuil and drummer Weasel Walter. The deal: The Ghost + Joe McPhee, Sunday May 5, doors at 7 music at 8. DJ set by a super special guest (musician-artist-composer of note) before and after. $20 at the door and $15 in advance. Advance ticket sales really help us a lot in terms of gauging the vibe so if you know you want to go, buy now! Please pass this email along to any of your contacts you feel may be interested as well.
  4. That's too bad. Shawn-neeq is a great record.
  5. Need to dig it out again, been years. I had another one on Metronome/Fona that didn't grab me as much, which I sold, but probably should reinvestigate at some point.
  6. yeah, that one and Newport in Milan are my two favorites. The latter reminds me a bit of Bill Dixon at times.
  7. Yeah, I have that one too. Gaslini was an utterly fascinating musician and composer, kind of reminds me of an Italian George Russell. That being said, not all of his records -- or at least those that I have -- blow me away but I'm usually quite interested in what he put out there, regardless of the end result.
  8. Yeah, the OP clarified "stage names" to mean musicians' non-given names. I'm sure there's a better way to put all of this.
  9. Brother Ah = Robert Northern Phil Musra = Phil Cooper Michael Cosmic = Michael Cooper Burton Greene = Burton Greenberg Nimrod Hunt = Carl Malone Pharoah was a name bestowed on Mr. Sanders by Sun Ra when the saxophonist was in his band. Luqman Lateef (sometimes spelled Latir) = Clarence Thomas Leopanar Witlarge = Leopold Witlarge
  10. nor her last: she also went by Aminata Moseka. I'd also think married names would not necessarily be stage names, but it is an interesting idea for a resource. Also, Muneer Abdul Fataah = Bernard Fennell. Another one I'm interested in is Daoud Haroon (John Mancebo Lewis)
  11. Andre3000 is cool. I'm down. No, it's not the greatest thing since sliced bread, but nobody is getting hurt in the process and he seems like a genuinely curious, creative dude. Few "star power" artists in this time period are actually able to use the opportunities afforded to them by their celebrity to do something neat that turns people on/out/etc.
  12. He no longer raps. His latest album involved multi-instrumentalist Carlos Nino and Andre himself plays a variety of custom-made flutes. It will be improvised music.
  13. would be nice if Atlantic issued those six tracks as a standalone. Assume that'll happen at some point.
  14. yep, Hancock or Don Cherry's name. But it was Tootie's session, Mtume's compositions (mostly), and the music can be heard pretty easily even if the story takes a bit of research.
  15. It was the engineer's label and I believe only existed for that one release. He licensed/sold some of his tapes to the Springboard/Trip/UpFront imprint, which is how the record has been bootlegged all over the place.
  16. have a Japanese wlp of this same record. Beautiful album, features Mtume's first recorded compositions. the Obé original is very hard to find. I've never even seen one in person.
  17. I always wondered whether there was an alternate master of Year of the Iron Sheep on which Daoud Haroon (John Mancebo Lewis) actually appeared. He's credited on the LP jacket but not present on the recording.
  18. the track on Paris Blues that is streaming on the Discogs link. Horace dropping some nice bricks in the pond there.
  19. Love the dissonant comping -- as much as I've never hugely connected with Horace records, hearing him at his height is really a gas.
  20. IIRC, Prestige combined music from the Nathan Davis and Annie Ross/Pony Poindexter SABA releases into one Carmell Jones album. Those are the German sessions I associate most with him, though apparently he did a fair amount of big band work over there as well.
  21. Very interesting about Carmell. He was a strong and highly personal improviser but I agree he was sometimes inconsistent. I've read that he dealt with some "personal problems" that might've impeded his clarity at times. Dunno if that added to the Pep's fracas. And @Dan Gould, sorry, thought you were talking about Silver, not BN at that time.
