  1. I have the French pressing with an alternate sleeve and never noticed the cat on the original...
  2. Really? I was 24 in 2001, lived in NYC and then Chicago for grad school, and remember it being a great time for music and art. I wasn't watching a lot of movies then but assume there was probably good stuff coming out as well. Can't speak to dance and theater as began paying attention to that world later. I was still active as a musician and friends were in bands, and things seemed really powerful and creative. The decade you mention was fun and fascinating for the arts and I enjoyed being around for it. Also, re: simplification, simple doesn't necessarily mean bad or good -- not everything has to be complicated to be enjoyable and moving.
  3. I haven't heard the Newman or the Harden. The other three I like very much but would have to go with the KD if I were voting (which I'm not, because I haven't spent any time with two of these records).
  4. Wow, 93! Glad he got to actually go into space.
  5. The "So, What Do You Think?" series returns! First up on Sunday the 14th of April is the duo of saxophonist Caroline Davis and guitarist Wendy Eisenberg, supported by the quartet Swoon (featuring violist Joanna Mattrey, violinist gabby fluke-mogul, trumpeter Chris Williams, and saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi). Doors at 7, music at 8, $15 either in advance or at the door. Wendy visited Tubby's last year in the trio Darlin' (with cellist Lester St. Louis and drummer Ryan Sawyer), and Chris was also at Tubby's last year in duo with Booker Stardrum. gabby played the series in 2022 as part of Queer Trash in a duo performance with Ava Mendoza, and Chris also played solo that year as part of the Astral Spirits label night. All of these sets were tremendous -- maybe you witnessed one or more of them! Wendy and Caroline are on tour in support of their new Astral Spirits LP Accept When, which can be sampled and pre-ordered here: https://daviseisenberg.bandcamp.com/album/accept-when We hope to see you in The Tub!
  6. Nice! I have some Toshiko LPs, including a couple with Tabackin. All of them are small or small-ish group affairs.
  7. Absolutely -- that large ensemble music is pretty tremendous. I interviewed him many years ago for what was then called AAJ-NY. The full text is somewhere buried on the AAJ website. I wish they treated their archives better.
  8. Ujamaa is Ted's own label. I'm sure the source tapes aren't always pristine. The extra tracks on Sextet make it a worthwhile pickup, in addition to the original LP (which is still reasonably priced according to Discogs). I have the Sun LP of Tapestry and the sound is far from crisp, but it is a very cool record.
  9. hey porcy62, been a while. On one level I agree with you (and am absolutely fine with my Japanese mono pressing of this album), but on another level a mass-produced item, even if comparatively few untarnished examples survive, is still mass-produced. It's not like the one-of-a-kind stage drawings I worked with as an archivist.
  10. Huh. I have the old CD reissue of Amaranths, which sounds fine to my ears.
  11. What a mess. I hope it gets sorted out positively for you. And yes, dementia is a progressive disease and I hope you have some folks around that can help you out without hindering normal life too much.
  12. Mine landed; haven't had time to spin them yet but look forward to the experience!
  13. a film -- er, documentary -- that I never tire of.
  14. I believe he is retired from public performance.
  15. oh yeah, I know what you meant. I'd imagine, though, someone could spin it to devalue the contributions of the non-superstar players.
  16. Oh damn, that's too bad. He was an asset to this community. RIP.
  17. yeah, agree. Poor Things is an awesome movie and Emma Stone was superb, but Gladstone's portrayal in Flower Moon is unfuckwithable. Flower Moon is great, certainly "Scorsese-ish," but also an important film that needed to be made. The book is even better. Flower Moon also did not feel long to me. It's very engrossing.
  18. Ah, didn't know Carlos played with Mal. His album Radio Song is a scorcher!
