  1. On the way back South on an epic 300+ mile drive today, Anita's 'Avalon' with the Bill Holman arrangement was playing on the radio. A highlight of the Mosaic set, for sure.
  2. That's a nice stash of vinyl, Brownie. I picked up some stuff myself today, but nothing to compare with your prices. Pleased to pick up a mono original of Hampton Hawes' first Contemporary LP in mono though. The sleeve is taped but the deep groove vinyl is pretty well pristine. Also picked up Terry Smith's LP on Lee Lambert records, with the Tony Lee trio. Very pleased to have found that one for £10.
  3. Charles Earland 'Black Drops' (Prestige purple lable)
  4. Webster Young 'For Lady' (OJC) Quincy Jones 'Go West, Man !' (Fresh Sounds reissue)
  5. Just giving the CD of this one another spin. Amazing how they hit the groove within 1 milli-second of the first track starting then it stays right in there for the duration. Very consistent. Grant Green's playing on this album a real highlight - very supportive of Big John, who of course plays his ass off. Love that big bass pedal sound he gets here. Desert island stuff, this one
  6. Johnny Scott Quintet 'Communication' (UK Columbia mono). With Duncan Lamont (tenor) and David Snell (harp).
  7. Jazz Crusaders disk #6. Very positive views about this set !
  8. By the time it ships across the Atlantic then, it might just be in time for Xmas (he says.. hopefully..)
  9. Indeed, many happy returns of the day to Mr Dixon . I'll dig out my Savoy LP a bit later tonight. Hope he makes a return trip to play the UK again soon, having missed it the last time.
  10. William Henderson with Pharoah Sanders for 15+ years. Bobby Wellins (on and off) with Stan Tracy since the 1960s Jack Nimitz and Mel Hill with Gerald Wilson since the 1960s
  11. Indeed ! Including: Milcho Leviev 'Blues For The Fisherman' (Art Pepper session in disguise) Reissues of Tubby Hayes 'Mexican Green' and 'Tubbs' Tours' A Gil Evans RFH recording and a Bobby Jaspar. They were also behind the excellent releases on the Hot House label (Nathan Davis, Dusko Gojkovich etc.)
  12. That's exactly how it started. I still have a copy of Ed Dipple's first mail-order list from back in about 1976. I recall buying a Miles Davis Prestige twofer from it. This is really sad news. Whenever in London I try to visit the store and the current owner (Andy, I think) was always very helpful and fun to chat with about things to do with jazz vinyl. I'm sorry that it hasn't worked out. I can recall when Mole stocked all of those King pressings ('Oblique', 'Inner Glow' etc) but at the time I couldn't afford them. It was fun drooling over them though.. A sad event for UK jazz.
  13. Really ?? I for one would pre-order that set in a flash..
  14. Caught a bit of the tribute. They showed the 'fork handles'. His 'drag' routines (e.g. Dolly Parton) were the funniest though.

Sherlock H. reporting in, boss.. Here's the cover of the UK original on Parlophone for the Tommy Watt 1958 album (issued on King under another name I think).
  16. Thanks for the info. Many old Conns are indeed listed with a release date of October 14 and a price of 9.99 Euro. http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000CDL5V http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004GJVN/ http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004GJVK/ http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002ZBRZA/ http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000589US/ http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004GJVQ/ . . . Some on JPC, but with the original release dates. ← I've seen all of these at FOP stores in the UK recently priced at £5 each.
  17. This is sad news. He was a class act but gave lots of laughs to many. When I think of Ronnie Barker it takes me right back to the 1970s, when the 'Two Ronnies' was pretty well a national institution here in the UK and regularly topped the polls. Their song and dance routines could be hilarious. Cutting humour, right on the money but never offensive. Big for that.
  18. It sounds excellent, no hint of tape hiss, almost too clean. Now how about Priester's other ECM LP? ← It's a beauty. 'Polarization' is a quintet session of San-Fran based musicians with Priester's trombone much more to the fore - a more introspective session than 'Love, Love'. A couple of the tracks also have a very nice 'fusion' feel - in the best sense. I have both of the Priesters on the vinyl and the sound is A1.
  19. A timely nomination. I have a NY USA mono LP of this one on order ( ). Of course the interaction of Bobby H and Big John are a very significant to the success of this session. Will give the CD a spin tonight. Love the cool cover art too !
  20. I was fortunate enough that Sam Rivers signed copies of his Blue Note LPs for me last year after a gig. He seemed delighted to 'do the honours' in an immaculate script. Wayne Shorter, Andrew Hill and Herbie Hancock have also signed some of their Blue Note albums for me - again they seemed very happy to sign them. In each case the personalisation makes them a treasured item for me and a delight to pull out of the rack. I've also picked up the occasional signed album whilst purchasing second hand. Particular faves are 'Sonic Boom' (King) signed by Ron Carter and a Paul Horn LP recorded in Russia. It's certainly important not to burden the artist for an autograph if they are busy/flustered/exhausted after the gig etc. All of my signatures have been given when the artists are relaxing post-gig and have been happy to converse. Big to all of the above for sparing their time on peons like me .
