  1. Yeah, it's really good. One of those albums which looks diabolical on paper but which really works. Tribute to Leadbelly.
  2. Not Ian Carr or anything to do with him ! Agree that the rhythmn section is really good. All regarded very highly over here. Soulpope (I think) would recognise the bassist.
  3. Yeah, good point. I'll probably end up buying it. The one banjo exception I have is that Clifford Jordan 'These Are Our Roots' on Atlantic. Surpasses expectations.
  4. I was thinking of picking up the reissue - but your words here have raised my caution too. Not a great fan of harmonica either, especially in a Hutcherson/Land context. What next...banjo?
  5. @mjazzg - Correct on the tenor player. Only someone familiar with the scene over here would likely identify that very fine and underrated player. Now the rest..
  6. @Eric - Is that Oliver Lake on alto?
  7. Not Billy Harper ! Not Alan Skidmore ! Not early 70s, not Cobblestone, not Tony W. The bassist is most definitely an underrated master.
  8. Sonny Rollins Quintet 'Plays For Bird' (Esquire)
  9. No probs. Since getting this set the Sonny Clark LPs have been getting not too much play, always a good sign.
  10. Sonny Rollins 'Perspectives' (Esquire) A masterclass in how to condense it all in 3-4 mins per track.
  11. Just had a look at the booklet - there seem to be half a dozen or so which were previously issued only on CD. Some of which were alternate takes. Incidentally, the CD sound on the set is very good indeed.
  12. I did my 'landing' as a Canadian permanent resident in Detroit, back in the day - heading in from Windsor, ONT. Tried to find the Motown Museum but without success. The whole thing was an 'interesting' driving experience.
  13. Yes, a fantastic album, 'Vade Mecum' seems to be a further development of 'Intents and Purposes' and is just as good. Beautifully recorded and with incredible work by Tony Oxley (RIP).
  14. Ken Moule Ensemble - 'Adam's Rib Suite' (Ember/Acrobat)
  15. Wasn't even aware of that Trio Ogun record so one to watch out for. The book seems to be good at raising awareness of stuff that one doesn't even know about. Also for re-aquainting with recordings seldom spun. Case in point - Ken Moule's 'Adam's Rib Suite'. British jazz classic - no and very much on the twee side but still enjoyable and a well played period piece. Interesting that it gets the full double page spread in the book.
  16. Yes, with different quirkier sleeve art. It was done as sort of a joint project with the owner of a country house in Shropshire. Not jazz as we know it- but I should have spent the £2 for Frank's playing. Updated - seems to be available and cheap on discogs. I wonder why? 🙄
  17. Some good reviews there - and I need to pick up those Trevor Watts and Karl Jenkins releases. On the one visit I made to DMG in its old location, I picked up the Wickes book.
  18. 'Yokohama Concert' on Pablo was the first one I bought too and it marked a return to jazz for JJ after years in the studio. So glad I got to see and meet him in that last period of live gigging (with a young Rene Rosnes on piano). A true legend.
  19. Never even knew about that Surman Japanese Columbia LP ! Some real obscurities have been listed. Stuff like Bristol guitarist Frank Evans on SayDisc. I actually came across that English Consort LP in the racks about 10 years ago for £2 and passed as I thought it was a twee classical curio ! Duhhh... Talking of Frank Evans - he used to sell his home produced CDs to shops in the Bristol/Bath area - I have one. Have yet to see that first Arman Ratip trio LP anywhere. Must have sold about 10 copies.
  20. Sure was. I remember random bleeps, hilarity outbursts and obscenity interjections. I lasted about 5 minutes ! Interesting - same thing has happened to many of these 19th century institutions over here too, usually converted into 'executive housing'.
  21. No problem. More of a 'bolt on' than 'Synthesis' I think but it seems to work. I found my Australian pressing so will spin it later (in recognition of their defeat at The Gabba by West Indies XI !) The Pure Pleasure LP box of that season is great. Also put out on CD by Laurie Pepper I think.
  22. I joined in on one of those once and it was like a lunatic asylum !
