  1. Nowhere is my ignorance more obvious than when it comes to automobiles, especially the one I own. It's a 1993 Lumina that I bought off a buddy a couple years ago for 500 bucks, and so far it has had no major problems. I recently drove from North Carolina to Minnesota, and I'm about to head back. Before I left, I had a tune-up, and oil leaks from the front and rear seals. I made it to MN with no problem. I also got a mechanic here to look at it, and he also mentioned the leak, but when I asked him if that would be a problem on the return drive, he said just to keep an eye on it. My question: If I bring extra containers of oil in the car, should that be good enough? Are oil leaks relatively normal? Do I need to fix this before I leave? By the way, I can see a little bit of oil under the car when I park, but it doesn't look excessive. I appreciate any knowledge you car savvy folks can impart. Thanks.
  2. Bebop, I ordered on the 15th and hadn't heard anything. I called them today and both orders are still in the system. It's just taking a while. Give them a call and make sure they're at least processing.
  3. While waiting on word from Concord regarding several orders from weeks ago that are hopefully being processed, albeit slowly, I got the purchase fever and visited Dusty Groove. Maynard Ferguson - Band Ain't Draggin Maynard Ferguson - I Have But Two Horns/Plays Bill Holman's Arrangements John Graas - Jazz Lab 1 & 2/ Pete Rugolo - Adventures In Sound (Music for Hi Fi Bugs/Out On A Limb/Adventures in Sound Brass/Adventures in Sound Reeds) Barney Wilen/Alain Gouraguer - Jazz Et Cinema V.1 (JiP) Various - Jazz Et Cimena V.4 (JiP) Martial Solal - A Bout De Souffle Swingle Singers w/MJQ
  4. I placed an order for 130 or so titles, mostly K2s (don't have any yet), limited OJCs and some Good Time Jazz titles). Hopefully most of them are available. This is one of the few purchases where I'm absolutely devoid of guilt. Helluva deal!
  5. Back in June 2004, I, in my foolish youth, succumbed to a significant amount of frenetic pre-deployment purchasing. Along with maybe 1200 dollars spent at Tower, I bought and recieved from Mosaic in the span of several days the following: Complete HRS JJ Johnson Kenton Presents Elvin Jones Johnny Hodges Joe Pass Johnny Smith Shank/Cooper Select Brookmeyer Select Needless to say, I'm happy with the sets but that was a bit too much to digest at once, and I've more or less laid off Mosaic since then.
  6. Just finished William Manchester's The Last Lion Alone: 1932-1940. For admirers of Churchill, this and its preceding volume are indispensible. The book is a fascinating read and Manchester was a brilliant writer.
  7. Folks, thank you kindly for the wishes. Here's hoping everyone has a lovely holiday season. From Republican-held Camp Blue Diamond, Ar Ramadi Cheers The Musical Marine
  8. Just called Mosaic...75 Ory sets left. Another post had them at 150 sets at the end of July. Hopefully they won't sell out this month.
  9. Dameron is my favorite arranger, and I love this album. Agree wholeheartedly with Big Al's high regard for "On A Misty Night". Prefer this version to the one on Mating Call and the one Chet Baker did on Prestige.
  10. I don't have anything by her, and would like to change that. Anything, solo, with Mariano, with Tabackin, whatever. If you have a suggestion, please let me know. Thanks
  11. Still in an OJC panic mode so I picked up the following: Andre Previn - Plays Vernon Duke Art Taylor - Taylor's Tenors Bobby Jaspar - Bobby Jaspar and George Wallington Bud Johnson - Let's Swing Bud Johnson - Budd Johnson & The Four Brass Ernie Henry - Last Chorus Ernie Henry - Presenting Ernie Henry Frank Rosolino - Free For All George Russell - Stratus Seekers Harold Land - The Fox Jaki Byard - Here's Jaki James Moody - Hi Fi Party James Moody - Wail, Moody, Wail Jerome Richardson - Midnight Oil Jerome Richardson - Roamin' Kenny Burrell - Ellington Is Forever V.1 Larry Young - Young Blues Lester Young - In Washington V.4 Matthew Gee - Jazz By Gee Shelly Manne - Three & The Two Shelly Manne - Volume 1 Shelly Manne - Gambit Sonny Criss - Sonny's Dream Thad Jones - Mad Thad Walt Dickerson - Relativity Zoot Sims - If I'm Lucky Zoot Sims - I Wish I Were Twins Also 4 John Graas titles from Lonehill and the Basie Roulette Live off of Ebay. While happy with the purchases, I can't help feeling slightly ill when thinking about the money spent.
  12. Ghost, we did indeed talk about the LOA books, both fascinating. I'll check out that Stalingrad, although that's a helluva depressing battle even to read about. Talk about a study in futility. Conn, while I'm partial to the macro perspective (Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, The Rising Sun, etc.), I've read a number of books on particular campaigns. Sixty Days That Shook The West, I believe it's called, was the first authoritative book on the '40 Western campaign. Ten Days To Destiny, about the invasion of Crete, was also stellar. You ever read Irving's Hitler's War? I know he gets a lot of shit for being a revisionist, but he's a good writer. Samuel Elliot Morrison, if I'm not mistaken wrote the official history of the U.S. Navy in WWII. Jazzmoose, when and where did you serve? You ever read anything on the Weimar Republic? For the die hard, I strongly recommend (if you can find them) any of the official British histories on the war. They did a series on the Far East, Europe, Grand Strategy, and a few others. Exhaustive, but worth it. Anyone seen Capra's Why We Fight series?
  13. I'm an avid reader of history, especially World War II. Anyone have any suggestions? Particulary looking for the thicker, discouraging tomes. Dry and academic is okay, but I'll try anything. Military, political, ecomonic, social histories all good.
  14. Thanks for the great replies. Please keep them coming.
  15. ...in my collection. I'm looking specifically to accumulate a few each of: Shirley Scott Richard "Groove" Holmes Jack McDuff Don Patterson Jimmy McGriff Charles Earland Any recommendations welcome. Thanks Edited to add Earland
  16. I'm contemplating the purchase of a few Tubby Hayes reissues (Japanese sleeve editions) from Dusty Groove. As of now, my collection is American, with a few British imports. What can I expect? I'd assume better sound. Are the liner notes in English? Are Japanese reissues usually legitimate (compared to Definitive or Lonehill, not that I have anything against them)? Have those of you that have purchased Japanese editions been pleased? Thanks
  17. Just read the news. RIP. She played a Southern sentator very well in G.I. Jane.

  19. It's a good album. All of Kessel's Contemporary albums are enjoyable, although I probably listen to The Poll Winners the most frequently.
