  1. Yes! That was the group. Other Dimensions in Music. Roy's work in tandem with Daniel Carter was exemplary. Many fine sets through the years. Roy was a kind and friendly soul. Hadn't seen him in a year and a half. I will surely miss him. R.I.P Roy.
  2. Was just listening to "Chemins II" by Luciano Berio from an RCA Red Seal LP.
  3. That's cool. I get it. And I may misuse terms. I mean they're always subject to interpretation. Do I mean to say modern, contemporary, avant-garde? That's why I thought I'd specify a few of the more well known composers. No big deal.
  4. Thanks for the suggestions. Bill, the show on your station looks great. I could never listen live but will try to pull up the archived show.
  5. Any recommendations for places to hear modern classical music on the radio? I sometimes hear the occasional pieces on "Afternoon New Music" om WKCR but can't think of anything else. I used to co-host a program called "Delusions and Furies" (a take on Partch's Delusion of the Fury) on WHFR-FM. Now I incorporate some pieces at the tail end of my other program "Spirits Rejoice", mainly an avant-garde jazz program. What programs are out there playing exclusively the music of Xenakis, Stockhausen, Partch, etc....? I'd love to hear some.
  6. Great record. I love Joe Chambers' pieces in particular.
  7. My favorite is "Burnt Weeny Sandwich" Some brilliant instrumental music after the short and fun 'WPLJ". Perhaps the best use of percussion of all his records. And a nod to Stravinsky as well.
  8. I can see where Bol makes the connection of Nuscope to ECM. Russ Summers at Nuscope is meticulous in his recording methods and seems to come up with that pristine sound. He has some great sets out on the label although I feel like some of them are a bit on the stiff side. I think that this new Starmelodics with Kaufmann, Dresser, and Eisenstadt may be my favorite thus far.
  9. We Free Kings definitely counts. That's one of my three. The other two: The Creator Has a Master Plan - Pharoah Sanders version from "Karma". Peace Piece - Bill Evans from 'Everybody Digs Bill Evans". Somehow I can't really stomach straight jazz versions of Christmas Carols.

    Prince Lasha RIP

Is that one on CD? I remember the existence of a bootleg LP but never saw a copy. I've never seen this one. Would certainly love to hear it. I'll be featuring some of Prince Lasha's music tonight (Tuesday) on "Spirits Rejoice" radio, WHFR-FM Dearborn/Detroit 6-10pm est http://whfr.fm
  11. I was supposed to be in for the Vanguard sets from Friday thru Sunday but had to change plans at the last minute. Nice to hear that Cecil and Tony are still happening. I was just playing a tape from a concert that they did last fall in Italy and it was brilliant. Recent solo sets from Cecil have shown him exploring a mellower, more lyrical side. I heard one in Toronto last June and in NY this June. It has prompted some to assume that Cecil is slowing down as he approaches 80 years of age. While there may be some inevitable truth here, I don;t think that he is. I've seen sets with him over the past few years with his Big Band at Iridium and with Pheeroan Ak Laff and Henry Grimes there that just smoked. I was fortunate enough to catch all of the sets that he did with Tony back in 2000 at Tonic. The two were locked in so tight and playing off one another so sympathetically that it was truly amazing. And the energy level just seemed to rise in each subsequent set. I know that this is eight years later but I sense that it is all still there. I'd be interested in hearing more comments about these Vanguard sets.
