  2. Yes, glad that he did have that opportunity to come back strong for a while.
  3. I love how Mingus addresses the nonexistent audience on Mingus Presents on Candid.
  4. Leny Andrade, Joyce, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, among others, are fluent in English. Joyce sings in English almost without an accent, having lived in NY for some time.
  5. I believe Quincy Jones introduces Patti Bown as "bone" on the Jazz Icons DVD of his big band. I've always heard Moye pronounced two syllables.
  6. No problem with any of the above. But I have a major problem with bowed cymbals, which seems to be a folly of the "avant garde."
  7. You'll miss out on a lot of great Machito recordings, then. Bechet & Lacy? But yeah, after Trane it seemed that every tenor player felt he HAD to take up soprano, but without developing an instrument-specific approach, IMO. I can do without Shepp & Pharoah on soprano, for instance. I have no instrument I'd rule out, though harpsichord and celesta are hard sells. Can't stand the sound of Kellaway's harpsichord on Ben's See You at the Fair. I wouldn't care if Frank Wess and James Moody had never played flute, but jazz would be a poorer place if Rahsaan, Dolphy, Sam Rivers and a few others never did. And Nicole Mitchell & James Newton.

  9. Yeah, wait until you're 100%, then you might find your dream set.
  10. Limited edition? What number was yours? It's an out of series proof. I decided not to use one of the erotic ones at work.
  11. Chuck, do you know who was on stage? I haven't been to the festival since '09.
  12. I felt that way last time I saw the band, about 2 years ago. And I love Threadgill, but I didn't love the two prior Pi releases. Up Popped Two Lips was, for me, his most recent totally great album.
  13. That Fefer trio is great. Moondoc seems to have been less active in the last few years. I wonder if he left the area.
  14. Michael Moriarty Joe Pesci Danny Aiello
  15. I'm generally not a big scat fan, but I think Leny Andrade is one of the best alive today.
  16. to each his own--would you favor us with your fab 5? In no particular order: Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Carmen McRae, Anita O'Day ... and a rotating fifth chair currently held by Jeanne Lee (other occupants have included Lee Wiley & Mildred Bailey, but never Sarah Vaughan).
  17. Why is buying a used LP for $60 that nobody makes royalties off of any different than downloading a rip from a blog, in moral terms? Is it just that we've been accustomed to mechanical recordings being resellable without turnover royalties?
