I think Butch pretty much gave up playing cornet for conduction. For me he's beyond jazz, he's one of those true American originals like Ives & Cage. Though for me most of the Murray big band albums are neither among Murray's nor Butch's best work (I like the Murray octet much more).

For my parties I want tracks from Tony Williams' Spring, Cecil Taylor's Conquistador, and Jackie McLean's Destination Out. Shed the materialism, man.

Speaking of the Great American Music Hall, the Carmen and Betty Carter album recorded there is a joy--they're having such a good time together. And I don't always have a long fuse for Betty Carter.

Definitely an underrated Miles album. I love the spare sound, and the arrangements, and Teddy Charles. I think they really found a different way to work with Miles' fragile tone that works marvelously. Some of my favorite Miles are the out of the box anomalies, like this and the soundtrack for the Malle film.

Pandora doesn't let you stream entire albums though, right? No, it's still the "music genome" generating "random" music based on your preferences. I was just pointing a way to get around the commercials and get better audio. Pandora has always worked nicely for me, and I've discovered a lot of music through it.

But not as daring as the continental drift.

I was just about to ask that question. In the last number of years Omnitone, Pi, Palmetto, Sunnyside, Clean Feed, Firehouse 12, the stalwart Delmark and just a few others seem to be the labels most likely to put out the kind of jazz I'm interested in. Forget the majors.
