Right - Academy is okay, but the condition of their stock has been pretty crappy lately, in my experience. It is a once every month or two stop for me. I've never noticed much jazz at Sound Library. Other Music can be pretty good, but the jazz section is a bit of a footnote. That being said, I saw Cosmic Music on Coltrane records in excellent condition there once for $60. Downtown Music Gallery currently has all the Sun Ra and Ornette records on Impulse, with prices ranging from $75 - $100. Very, very occassionally Kim's on St Marks will have some interesting stuff, but you have to wade through tons of crap to find it and it is usually in poor condition and priced above the market for NM. Like I said, there are places here and there with small sections where you can occassionally make a great find, but other than JRC nothing is going to be a major revelation for you.

They have been named. Record stores have been closing left and right over the last few years. There are a few places here and there with small sections to flip through, but nothing that would really qualify as a consistently good place to find jazz vinyl.

I use a tiny bit of delay to approximate reverb, as champs don't have springs in them. That's one reason I've always wanted a princeton - they are just too loud for my apartment building, unfortunately.

I had fun playing stereo through my champ and my friend's fucked-up-but-in-a-cool-way-sounding pocket amp a couple weeks ago - the contrast between the classic sound of the champ and the badly-tuned-cheap-radio sound of the pocket amp was really interesting, especially using the stereo ouputs of my delay or voodoo vibe. For now I'm using my champ and a really cheap solid state practice amp for my stereo playing.

No, it's not like a Princeton - at least mine isn't. I've found that the 60s and 70s stuff isn't always perfectly consistent in design. Actually, I've been keeping half an eye out for a second champ - I've been into playing in stereo lately.

What is the wattage on that? I have been looking for a 1W or less tube amp. I know zvex makes one, but I'm not a big fan of their stuff (except the fuzz factory, which is pretty fun).

There is a narrow cable coming from the head - much narrower than a standard guitar cable - with clips on the other end that attach to the speaker. The amp is identical to the image you posted.

Nah. Amp->speaker cable->THD attenuator->speaker cable->speaker. You just have to get the right box with the correct ohm rating for your speaker load. I don't know - the amp to speaker connections in my champ look a little hairy...

Thanks - sounds interesting. I've been using a Fulltone OCD pedal to make the amp sound good at low volume, but this is definitely an intriguing alternative. I suppose for a combo amb like my Champ installing this require a sodering iron?

Man, once upon a time I had every worthwhile (IMO) record on all those labels. Sold off the collection to fund college expenses (kept all the minutemen records, though - couldn't bear to part with them even though it's almost all on cd). The one thing on Homestead that I always wanted but never got was Volcano Suns/Bright Orange Years. I still half heartedly look for that one whenever I flip through the bins.

I'd love to get a Princeton someday, but I think my 70s Vibro Champ is pushing the limits of my neighbors' tolerance as it is.

I'll never forget the three minute message my roommate got 15 or so years ago from the magazine buyer at Tower cataloging all the things that were wrong with his 'zine... brutal!

I dunno, a lot of these sets are in print, and many are only recently OOP... I'd rather get the in print ones at my own pace.

On mine it was at least 6 inches, which is part of what made them look so ridiculous. I don't know if they changed or made a goofy batch or what, but it was a lot of overhang. The backwards thing isn't a bad idea if you really want to use the formica tops, but then you can't put them against the wall.

If anyone is interested in the Koa strat, I bought a Koa body and loaded it with neck, pickups and hardware from a 1996 USA Standard Strat with very good results that I'm actully trying to sell. I'm asking less than $700 price tag on the Korean model. I'm pretty sure I posted pictures of it earlier in this thread. If the neck is relatively thin without being too narrow, I'm interested.

Yes, I was there yesterday. They had a thick collection of Buck Clayton jam records, which I passed on. I didn't notice anything else. They used to always have a bunch of Impulse vinyl, but not lately - I think that stuff all goes straight to ebay. Their punk/indie vinyl section is still pretty good, if you're ever looking for that. For instance, they have just about all the SST that you could ever want for about $10/album, which is about what they cost in, oh, 1992...

I realized last night that I was really thinking of Bleecker St. Records when I said BS Bob's. BS Bob really is ridiculous... I had no idea my Treacherous 3 LP would be worth $450 even if I were to run it over with a truck... I've been going to Subteranean for many years - maybe 10. The selection is not what it once was, but it is still a cool shop. I think ebay has hurt their business a lot. BTW, they have an original pressing of One Step Beyond in the bins right now, but the cover is pretty chewed up and there are at least two unidentified species of fungi growing on it. Only $25, though - I have to admit I thought about it for a second...

I dunno... I got McCoy Tyner - Cosmos there for $8 in mint condition about 5 years ago. I also saw enough Buck Clayton CBS records to replicate the majority of the Mosaic for about $3/piece there earlier today...

No - I'll have to check that out tonight - thanks. The 13th Floor Elevators are one of the few standouts in the generally bleak musical history of the Bay Area. A couple good things have come out of my hometown, but disproportionately little.
