Aren't the Spanish BN cds the ones where they changes all of the colors on the covers? As I recall, they're pretty hideous.

I've been seeing some of his Strata East material on CD and LP for $12 a pop in my local record stores for the past few weeks. To me, the Strata East material much, much different from his sideman dates on BN. I actually prefer the Strata East stuff by far.

Hi - I know someone selling this three LP set, which I have coveted for some time. What's a fair price to offer? The jacket is pretty beat, but the discs look like they're in VG to VG+ condition.

Yep. Music Inc. Live at Slugs has been in heavy rotation for me. I wouldn't call it soul jazz or avant-garde. If I REALLY had to pick a label, post-bop is probably the one I'd go with. But really, this is just good music. The Strata Easts have inspired me to look for the rest of his albums.

I also passed on the Moncur. I have the cds of his leader dates and I have the record of Hipnosis, so it seemed unnecessary to me.

I'm excited about the Bennie Green set. It's relatively inexpensive, too. For those familiar with the Randy Weston material, is it a good collection for someone with a limited amount of Weston in his library?

On album that has been strongly recommended to me repeatedly is Max Roach's We Insist. I'd love to see that one come out domestically.

Nicholson is the biggest bandwagon fan in the world. He goes to the baseball playoffs to root for the Yankees, too. Of course, he's probably wearing an Angels cap these days.

Yes, John Barth! GILES GOAT-BOY is wickedly funny as well. Jim Dodge is another humorous author you might check (a different type of humor).
Giles Goat Boy is another great one, but for me it took a little longer to get going. Well worth a read, though.

I have no answer for you. I was born in Jamaica as a white minority. My friends were white, colored, and black. All Jamaicans are still brothers to me. I move to the States and discover a different situation. Everyone is totally uptight about race relations. Everyone is afraid to speak their mind.
What part of Jamaica are you from? My girlfriend is Jamaican. We're going down to visit her parents in a couple weeks. (They come up here all the time, in fact they had a house on Long Island that they just sold last week.)
I've only lived in "white" neighborhoods twice in my life, and one of those was the Upper West Side which I guess really doesn't qualify as white, but it's about as close as you come in Manhattan. It was only the second time I had lived in a building where the majority of tenants were white. (Given that my last name is Larsen, I think it's pretty obvious that I'm Caucasian.) I don't know, having grown up almost exclusively around black and Asian people, I 've never really been able to relate to the "mainstream white" discourse on race relations. For me it's never been a big deal. Until I left the city I grew up in for the first time, which wasn't until I was 11 or 12, I didn't really realize that whites were a majority. I've always been myself to everyone, and I've always assumed that people around me were doing the same. Of course, I understand that severe racial inequities exist in our society, so that this is a crucial topic by necessity. I'm only speaking on a very personal level here.

Have you read any John Barth? The Sot-Weed Factor is one of the funniest books I've ever read. It's basically a twisted love story embedded within a satire of American history, but it is not over-the-top in it's political implications. In fact, it can be just a really funny, somewhat peverse story if that's all you want it to be.

There's this old grumpy guy who posts on the SF Giants message board all the time. His screen name is fwaybill. I always wondered if it might possibly really be him. Just from subtle side comments he's made here and there, he definately knows a LOT about the 70s SF music scene and about the 70s punk thing in general. And he's definately in the right age range. He just remembers too many specific things about 70s/80s baseball to not be.
As an aside, do you know what eventually happened to Fee? He ended up being a backup vocalist on Richard Marx records. How's that for irony?

I have one of those too, but before that high-tech gadget came out I had to make due with an Atari 2600 (which I still have but haven't played in a while). BTW, there were some stellar games for the ol' Atari, like JUNGLE HUNT, KEYSTONE KAPERS, PETE ROSE BASEBALL, KUNG FU, etc. Does anyone else have/use to have one of these babies?
Hackers have coded 2600 emulators that you can download along with the ROM files (the info from the game cartridge chips) for all of the old games. In fact, they've done this for all the old systems and all of the old classic arcade games. Of course, that's just what I've heard...

Not so fast! In 1918 the Giants started 18-1, played .500 ball for the rest of the season and finished second in the NL. In 1938 the Giants started 13-1, played .500 ball for the rest of the season, and finished third in the NL. Last year the Giants started 6-0, floundered in late June and July, appeared as though they'd miss the playoffs, picked up Lofton at the last second and barely grabbed a welfare (oops, I meant wild) card spot. I love the Giants as much as a man can love a sports team, but I'm cautious about their hot starts. I'm equally cautious of the Dodgers slow starts - they always seem to turn it on over the summer even if they don't have teh personnel.

Yeah, but back then SPs started 50+ games a season. His record of 316 losses isn't likely to be broken either ;-). But again, he was obviously a great pitcher.
The record that could conceivably be broken but never will be is the DiMaggio streak.

I see that I misspelled Koufax in my last post. Cy Young was obviously a great in his time. It's hard to say whether he was one of "the greats" just because the game has changed so much (from bunt-n-run to slugging, from high mounds to low, from huge parks to small, from a lot of low-velocity long-endurance pitchers to a lot of 95MPH six-inning guys, etc.). But yeah, Young was obviously great at least for the style of baseball in his time, and he may well have been a champion in any era. It's just really hard to know. Is there even any existing footage of him pitching? I don't think I've ever seen any.

I'm planning on buying a video game system for my cousin who will soon be 16. I don't want to get some crap system that will only leave him jealous of whatever it is all his friends have. So what's the best system out there? PS2? XBox? Nintendo? Genesis? I'm absolutely clueless.
BTW, I'd like to get him a system that plays DVDs as well. Price is no object here. His father just hooked me up with a nice consulting gig, so I have no inclination to be cheap about this.
