  1. HA! After routing the Padres, the Giants now have sole possession of the top spot in the NL West. This year's supposed "small-ball" team has 7 HR in the first two games!

BTW, ghost, you can get video of the games online from MLB and turn the volume down. You ought to be able to get away with that at work.

  2. This is supposed to be coming out domestically on an indie label soon. Anyone remember the exact details? I thought this and Ghetto Music were supposed to be released very soon.

Okay, I see that the domestic CDs and LPs are going to come out on May 30. I can't find the label they're being released on right now, but I distinctly recall that it is a small label and that it's not Blue Note.

  3. I think I gave away my copy of 1+1, so you have my blessing to ditch that one. But Illumination is one of my favorite albums that I own, period! How long have you had it? If it's been years and you still don't like it, you may as well find it a new home. If you've had it a couple years or less, I'd suggest letting it rest on the shelf for a while and coming back to it later.

  4. The "new look" Giants won, but did not look very convincing (marginal defense, lots of LOBs).

That Derek Jeter injury could be huge. I hate the Yanks, but you still hate to see something like that happen. Hopefully it's not that bad of a dislocation. If there are torn ligaments involved, he could be seeing very limited action this year. Geez, what an opening day for him.

Oh yeah, Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine (who I think is over the hill) all got rocked and nearly every home team lost in the early games. It's just a wierd opening day all around.

  5. I've received some HORRIBLE cds due to BMG errors. Often times these fall into the Latin pop category. (No offence intended to anyone, but this is probably my least favorite genre of music [well, it at least gives disco a run for its money]. IMO, the bass always sounds like polka to me and the accordian is one of the lamest instruments ever invented. Also, I lived in SF's Mission district for a few years where I was woken up by this music being played at incredible volumes WAY too early in the morning on the weekends.) I wonder if they do this just to try to dump off slow selling Latin discs sometimes. Another time they sent me a Boney James cd. That thing was so scary looking I never even bothered opening it.

BTW, when this happens, just send them an email. They always rush the correct disc out to you and tell you to keep the errant one.

  6. I always thought this record would have been a lot better if Wayne had gone with a smaller ensemble. I think it could have been a great quartet or quintet record. With seven musicians, I find that the focus and direction often gets confused. I know I'm definately going strongly against the grain here, but I have never considered this to be one his better BN sessions. As a person with "out" leanings, I guess that really puts me in the minority!

  7. UNIX for Mac OS X

UNIX isn't the most intuitive OS in the world, but it's great once you get the hang of it. It's especially great if you want to do programming or scripting. I've really warmed up to the Mac implementation. I hardly use my Sun workstation at all anymore.

  8. Impossible, the new S&E package is really nice. I picked it up when it was released for the sake of nostalgia if nothing else. The extra material was all released as bootlegs or b-sides back in the day, but it's nice having the cd since I either sold, traded or lost those records a long time ago.

Also, I hear from an inside source that they will be giving the same treatment to Crooked Rain in 2004. 2005 might be a little more realistic considering how far the S&E reissue fell behind schedule.

  9. I actually followed Pavement from their first EP "Demolition Plot J7". They were really popular on KUSF (SF's college radio station) when I was in high school. I just saw their old Drag City records on the wall in a record store downtown - after seeing the prices I was kicking myself for not having saved my own copies. They weren't the most original group, but they were my favorite underground rock group of the early 90s. That being said, I have to say that I've always been in that tiny minority that thought they went WAY downhill after S&E, and putting on S&E these days usually makes me feel like I'm getting old ("I used to listen to this?!??!?")

  10. Okay, in my email it says that my special offer is buy one, get unlimited at $1.99. When I go to the site it says my deal is buy one, get three free. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a phone number I can call to get this straightened out? Email communication with them is so slow I'm afraid the deal will expire before the problem is resolved. Thanks.

  11. They sent me that Boney James record too! Evidently he's the hick version of Yanni. Anyway, I gave it to my girlfriend as a joke and she got $7 for it on Amazon marketplace!

If you're looking at the website, what you see is what you get. No additional selections become available once you've been accepted. I have one suggestion, though: they have the Mercury Blues 8CD set for about $20. Even with the approx. $10 shipping charge, it's still a great deal.

  12. Due to a miscommunication between my girlfriend and me, I have an extra sealed copy of this box set from BMG. I've opened up and listened to the other copy. It's great. The only difference between the BMG version and the version you get from stores is that where there is a UPC code on the regular version, on the BMG eidition there is a small white rectangle containing an alternate bar code and the text "Manufactured for BMG Direct". Same deal with the individual cds on in the box - the back covers contain the discreetly placed text "Manufacured for BMG Direct". Other than that, it's the same as you would get from Tower.

BMG Cost (w/ shipping): $36 and change

Your cost ppd to US address: $40

Obviously, if you are already a BMG member you should just get it from them. If I don't sell this to one of you by the end of the weekend, I'm just going to return it for a full refund. I just thought maybe someone would want to get a cheap, new copy of this set without having to join the club.

    PM me if interested.
