  1. Yeah, a bike's the way to go. If you need indoors, find a used Nordic-track (they don't make 'em anymore). I bought mine for $100 and it's been pretty sturdy. That said, I'd much rather be out on my bike. But winter can be pretty cold in PA.
  2. It took me a long time to find a copy of the Joe Newman. One finally turned up on ebay and I got it for less than $10. I've been listening a lot to the Duke Ellington vol 11-12, which is 4 complete small group sessions. Marvelous stuff, sounds good. I'm sure it's available from lots of other sources, though, and I have not researched its completeness. All I know is it starts with "Daydream" and "Good Queen Bess" and I'm hooked everytime I play it
  3. Just arrived from Mr Tanno - Thad Jones "You Made Me Love You", great quartet date with Mel Lewis, George Mraz, and Gregory Herbert. Also, "The Golden Duke" with the great Ellington-Strayhorn duets and the Oscar Pettiford cello session originally on Mercer Records.
  4. Randissimo you pop was on some good stuff. Woody has a really decent vocal on the Mars Early Autumn. And the calypsos are, like.........too hip, man!
  5. Harold Land - Take Aim (courtesy of our own Paul Secor). A nice date, better than I had expected. Alan Eager - Renaissance (Uptown) - this was supposed to be his comeback album in 1982. To my ears he wasn't ready - he sounds very tentative, sometimes he seems at a loss for ideas, and other times he sounds like he can't quite get those ideas to come out of the horn. I've heard live recordings of his performances from that same period that are much much more satisfying.
  6. It's time to make a little space and circulate some music. Postage is $2 for one, $3.00 for two or three, and $4.00 for more than three, in the U.S. Other countries at cost. Paypal or check okay. Contact me at bainbridge (at) dejazzd.com if interested. Please don't pm, I'm pretty lax about checking messages but I check email regularly. Thanks for looking Pete $12 Bobby Hutcherson - Components (Blue Note) $10 Bobby Hutcherson - Stick-Up! (Blue Note) $8 Bill Berry - For Duke (Realtime) Bill Berry's L.A. 7. The obvious solution is to learn to love Woody's vocals.....
  8. Cadence ( www.cadencebuilding.com ) seems to have a lot of them.
  9. As it happens I kept mine. I never felt the need to upgrade. The Sermon: 'S Wonderful Blue Room Lover Man Confirmation Au Privave The Sermon Flamingo Houseparty: J.O.S. What is THis THing Called Love Just Friends Cherokee Blues After All PEte
  10. I just sprang for Manny Albam Jazz Greats of Our Time (who can resist that lineup?) and Hans Koller Exclusiv (which includes a hard to find Oscar Pettiford leader session which I have only as a cdr of a tape dub from a noisy vinyl. Koller is no slouch in his own right)
  11. Dave - there is no indication on the Paich/Pepper whether it is monaural or stereo.
  12. John Coltrane The Classic Quartet: Complete Impulse Box. $55 including domestic shipping. Will ship outside the US at cost. Paypal okay. Thanks for looking Pete
  13. Tooter - one other recommendation, and then I'll shut up. Find yourself a copy of "Dr. Dogbody's Leg" by James Norman Hall. Dr. Dogbody is a retired naval surgeon, an habitue of Will Tunn's Cheerful Tortoise Taproom", and he tells a series of stories about how he lost his leg, each more outlandish than the last. I guarantee you will enjoy it. Oh, and go to: Patrick O'brian Resouces webpage wherein you will find a load of interesting information and links. Now - back to the wardroom.
  14. A Sea of Words I couldn't do without this book. It is the lexicon most O'Brian readers need. There's also a lovely book called "Harbors and High Seas" which maps each of the voyages, with period illustrations and plot synopsis. And of course some years ago two ladies published "Lobscouse & Spotted Dog", in which they recreated recipes for such delicacies as soused pig's face and spotted dick. My Amazon preorder for the unfinished novel states a ship date around August 21. Thanks for the quote. My favorite, which bubbles up in my consciousness at the most unexpected moments, has to do with why a dog watch is shorter than the other watches. You know the punchline, of course....definitely one of Maturin's finer moments.
  15. Brandon, I would be interested to know what you think of it after you listen to it. I picked one up awhile back at a similar bargain price ($7 I think). The Marsh cuts were great, and the Sheila Jordan was fine but very badly recorded (superb bass solo by Cameron Browne on one of the cuts), but I though the rest of it was pretty lame. I burned the Marsh cuts and then sold the set. No regrets.
  16. Marty Paich Quartet featuring Art Pepper Tampa VG+ $1.00 Lighthouse Allstars Jazz Rolls Royce Omega VG+ $5.00 Jimmy Giuffre The Easy Way Verve $5.00 Don Ellis Tears of Joy Columbia $5.00
  17. I'm another fan. I have gone through the cycle about once a year for the last 4 years since a friend introduced me to his writing. I didn't really care for the movie. The visual aspects were great, from what I saw and have read the recreations were very accurate, but the plot and the dialogue were unworthy of the books. Bruce, I don't recall Aubrey being bad at math at any time, or are you talking about his youth? He seems to have been a late bloomer. I have assumed that there is a correlation between his mathematical skills and his skill as a musician. I too was struck by the scene in which Maturin audits Aubrey playing the violin and is impressed with his skill. But isn't that much like real life? I've known and played with many musicians, and certain of them have that divine spark, if you will. As for the confusion with names, may I recommend "Persons, Animals, Ships and Cannon in the Aubrey-Maturin Sea Novels of Patrick O'Brian" by Anthony Gary Brown. When I read the series, this book and "A Sea of Words" are always at my side. I see that his unfinished 21st novel is scheduled for publication. Amazon doesn't give a release date yet. I'd at least like to find out if Stephen succeeds in his pursuit of Christine Wood, and see how Jack comports himself as an Admiral.
  18. I just received the e.p. on Imperial with Oscar Pettiford and Harry Babasin playing twin cellos with a combo. A typical Ebay "mint" record (i.e. NOT) but it's playable and it's cool to own it. And it cost me all of $1.99!
  19. 1977 - my freshman year at UNC. Charlie Parker and Phil Ford - what a nice pair of discoveries!
  20. The stuff on Brunswick would be prime Mosaic material. a good part of it has only been issued on ep or 45 rpm, and the lp on Brunswick is a tough one to find. All of it is first rate material, very much in a Hermanite vein. Contemporary has only issued the live big band material. "Launching of a Big Band" is another great lp, a studio recording which has not been on cd. I'm partial to the quartets with Terry Pollard. She was a fine pianist, and she and Gibbs had considerable empathy as musicians.
  21. Duke Ellington "1939" (Smithsonian label)
  22. Bob Brookmyer, disc 3. Gosh, what a swinger Al Cohn was. My kids gave it to me for my birthday on Sunday. What great kids!
  23. Been there lots of times, I'm afraid. My latest was the Ellington V-Discs on Collectibles, 3 discs for $8.99. I've scored some nice OOP stuff in the past such as the Stan Getz Nobody Else But Me, the Mulligan Japanese Emarcy disc for 8.99 and some of the Helen Merrill titles (but I just missed "Date with the Blues" last week. My notify list runs 2 pages at the moment, but it's been longer!
  24. Warne Marsh - Sax of a Kind, Hot Club label. DMM pressing, sounds really nice.
