  1. Don't make the drive based on my good luck. Most of the prices were comparable to those that I see on Ebay. The Art Blakey on vinyl topped out what I saw at $349! Some of the sets pictured are gone, i.e. the Commmodores Vol 1. I spotted the Bechet on the counter with a stack of other Mosaic titles as I was checking out (I guess they hadn't set it out in the bins yet) and asked the price out of curiosity - I just got lucky. The other sets in the stack were not bargains IMO. Of course, if you love crate digging I can't think of a better spot. If you know of any, please share!
  2. Nothing earth-shattering, but fun to watch PRE on Youtube Apparently Princeton Record Exchange purchased a large collection of Mosaics. I lucked into the Sidney Bechet Complete Blue Note for $39.99 today, but few others were bargain priced. They had Beneditti Parker for $49.99, and Don Cherry for $49.99 but the rest were closer to (or higher than) what I see on Ebay.
  3. I have had a good experience with my unit from Cambridge Audio. It's only 40 watts but very clean sounding. I got mine from Audio Advisor. A similar model here.
  4. I found that you can pinch the tines in and they will loosen up and stay loosened. I'd much rather risk the disc being loose in the case than clumsy me breaking one. I've made my way through disc 5 and I'm happy to say that I have not found anything in the sound to object to. I'll grant I'm not as discerning as some but I think it sounds pretty darn good. I've heard objections that they didn't use the masters, but judging from the notes I would gather that the masters re no longer available. I don't have a problem with Lasker's notes, either. I like the historical approach. Musicological notes would have resulted in a booklet of unwieldy length and bulk.

"Happy Girl" was reissued in Japan in a mini-lp package. I've had to be content with a cdr of "Hip Walk".
  6. My wife and I collect pottery. Some years ago I found a late 19th century dry sink with a matched Minton tile backsplash with a songbirds on vines motif which the dealer sold to me for $750 (we had a really good year financially, which so far has not been repeated) - it was a Valentine's Day gift. The tiles alone were worth the price, but it is a lovely piece of furniture. The dealer cried when I picked it up - she said that of all the pieces she had ever sold it was a favorite.
  7. My wife gave me the new Ellington Mosaic. Nothing else =that was enough!
  8. My wife just called. Mine arrived today. It's a Christmas present but I bet that sweet woman gives it to me early (pleeeeeeeeeeeeze....)
  9. The Bud Powell Mythic Sounds box - a gift from a friend on Organissimo for single lps, probably Warne Marsh Meets Gary Foster on Eastwind - certainly the most I ever paid for an lp!
  10. Up with price reduction, or if you think the price is too high make me an offer. If no response it goes to ebay next week. Thanks.

  15. There is a fair amount of information on the Rose labels in "Jazz Records The Specialist Labels" by Ralph Laing and Chris Sheridan.
  16. My copy is a Japanese mini-lp edition. It was quite inexpensive at the time but seems to be long out of print. You might inquire with Mr Tanno - he can sometimes find copies of OOP items at reasonable prices.
  17. I've spun my copy a couple of times now. This is really fine - excellent sound, nice performances, and some topnotch WM moments.

  19. At my wife's suggestion I went to a consulting pharmacist. At her suggestion I went on a high-protein, low carb diet. Also cut down on caffeine and increased my intake of water. She explained that the caffeine and the carbs were playing havoc with my blood sugar and adrenalin levels, and that I was probably constantly dehydrated from not drinking enough water. Also, she emphasized the importance of healthy snacks every 2 or 3 hours to help regulate blood sugar - I eat greek yogurt, small quantities of nuts and lowfat cheese, and protein bars. I feel much more energetic and I've lost 20 lbs in the last 6 months. She also suggested some blood tests and I found that I was low in Vitamin D, a problem easily rectified with supplements. With a return of energy I have been able to resume regular exercise which has helped with the weight loss. My ultimate goal is to lose another 20 lbs in the next 6 months.
  20. pm sent for Lou McGarity. Music From "Some Like It Hot" 8.50
  21. Last chance - this goes on ebay tomorrow if I have no takers. I'm dropping the price to $120. Thanks
