  1. My last couple of Mosaic deliveries have had part of the outer box ripped. Fortunately no damage to the contents. These days it seems to be taking around ten days to get an order to California. Back when DHL was doing the deliveries the max time was three days -- put the order in on Monday it would be here by Thursday (sometimes Wednesday). I guess those days are gone. Expecting my Jamal set on Friday. Got my fingers crossed...

    Jim Rotondi

Well said, Kevin. At the risk of being called a "moldy fig" I'm with you...
  3. You know, one of the things I like best about seeing jazz live is watching the reactions of the other players during a solo. I've seen many horn players do a double take -- or even laugh out loud -- at something the piansist or bass player did during their solo. It may be a reference to something that got played last week or a conversation on the way to the gig. It just demonstrates the added level of communication that goes on between master musicians. And, if the audience connects with that little piece of unspoken musical commnuication at the same time, it's very cool...
  4. Just finished a book that looked at music in L.A. from the 40s through the 90s (sorry, the title escapes me right now). The author's take on the Raiders was that they were really one of the first 60s garage/punk bands (along with the Seeds and the Standells) until they signed on to be the house band for Dick Clark's "Where The Action Is" TV show. Then he put them in those outfits... And, yes, I remember watching that show when I got out of school -- about the fourth or fifth grade. I also remember the song "Kicks" getting banned on the local radio station. Even though it was really an anti-drug song ("You better find out before it's too late, girl, you better get straight").
  5. Bought the CD version ($69 the week of release). Pretty disappointed in it. It includes 2 live CDs that have already been released over the last couple of years (Crazy Horse at the Filmore and a live at Massey Hall solo). If I hadn't already bought those, I guess I would have liked the set more. Also, there's virtually no booklet info (just who played on what, and when). I've heard Neil didn't even want to put out a CD version -- and this certainly looks like a record company required after thought. P.S. I've had to scrape glue off the surface of about half of the CDs. Looks like the CDs were put into the cardboard cases before the glue was dry. Pretty lame.
  6. Yeah, I agree the stereo versions are a little odd - with instruments on one side, vocals on the other. I remember reading an interview (in Musician magazine) with George Martin shortly after the first four Beatle CDs were released. Again, if I remember fight, Martin was pretty cheesed off because he wasn't consulted on those first CD releases. I don't believe he agreed with putting out the mono versions. He said there were prefectly good stereo mixes that already existed.

    Don Ellis

I was at the Monterey Jazz Festival over the weekend and Saturday afternoon they screened a documentary on Don Ellis called "Electric Heart: Don Ellis The Man, His Times, His Music". It was quite good. Before the film, his former pianist Milcho Leviev played some songs and talked about Ellis. The director followed up by talking about how hard it's been trying to get a distributor for the film. What I got from both Leviev and the film maker was a supreme frustration about how Ellis' impact on the music has been overlooked. They both consider him one of the major musicians of the last 50 years.
  8. Well, there's also this -- future releases from Bluenote: http://www.bluenote.com/CatalogArtistReleases.aspx
  9. Yes, an easy choice. The Gerald Wilson over the Johnny Hodges. I listen to the Wilson a lot more than I do the Hodges. And I'm not even a huge big band fan. In fact, I bought this one only knowing that it had some great west coast players on it. It was one of those Mosaic pleasant surprises. Great stuff.
  10. George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" on vinyl. That counts, right? It came in a box. I remember the set came out when I was in the sixth grade. I remember saving up for weeks to be able to afford it. Still a great set.
  11. I can recommend both the Nashville (6/20/06) and the Asheville, NC (6/27/06) CDs. I was surprised to hear how well integrated into the band Sco is. Really good stuff I've been finding the "Instant Live" CDs both at the local Borders and independent stores. They're also at Amazon and phil's web site. Only problem is, without being able to see the back cover of the CD which lists the musicians, you can't tell if it's a Scofield or Osby show.
  12. Now, to me, this is a great band. I posted here a few weeks ago that I've been picking up a number of the "Instant Live" 3 CD releases that were recorded on the bands recent tour. Yes, Osby and Sco are definitely part of the band. The "Instant Live" CDs that I have with Sco find him amazingly well integrated into the band. The two-guitar jams that I've heard are great. Check out the Nashville show. Osby seemed to take a little longer to fit it but toward the end of the tour was really contributing. And I think I actually like some of the "Instant Live" CDs better than the Warfield release (although that's fine too). I guess I'm a fan...
  13. Not to break the flow or anything, but has anyone been listening to the "Phil Lesh and Friends Instant Live" CDs from the tour. I've picked some of 'em up (a couple with Greg Osby and a couple with John Scofield). They're all really nice, but the ones with Scofield have some really great moments. He fits in really well with the band and the two guitar attack on these CDs are pretty great. Listening the the Nashville show right now. The first CD has some country-ish leanings, but the second CD just jams like crazy. Really like this one alot. Haven't gotten to the third CD yet. I was hoping Osby would go a little more out than he does with the band, but he's still fine. Phil's band does a great job. And I like Joan Osborne. Any other opinions?
  14. That was me. I've been hit with that "CDs being electronics" once or twice -- ususally on box sets. 99% of the time this type of coupon works on CDs.
  15. Mosaic - in the form of Basie, NK Cole, Smith, etc. - has nothing on these guys ----- http://cgi.ebay.com/Monkees-Headquarters-S...1QQcmdZViewItem
  16. Just noticed that this auction has been removed. Wonder what happened. Maybe the seller has second thoughts.
  17. These guys really pissed me off on Saturday. Went in with a 25% off coupon that they sent me ready to buy the Johnny Cash "Unearthed" box (regular price $79). At the checkout they told me they could only give me 10% off. The coupon said 25% off anything with the exception being only 10% off for electronics. They explained to me that CDs were electronics. BS. I've used the same type of coupon before for CDs with no problem. I wonder if the price is over a certain amount they start get more reticent about giving big discounts. Didn't buy the box. I can get it online cheaper anyway. A-holes...
  18. It was no joke. Came inside a card thanking me for my support over the years. I used it to buy yet another Mosaic box just a few weeks later.
  19. 100+. In fact, the only OOP boxes that I don't have are volumes 2 and 3 of the Commodore sets. Yeah, I know...I have way too much disposable income... Here's something pretty cool - As I was ordering my 100th set I just happened to put in the comment section of the on-line order form that this was, in fact, my 100th set. Didn't expect anything from it (except maybe an email saying "thanks, keep it up"). Well, the day after I received the set (the Turrentine) I find a "next day" package laying on my doorstep with a $100 "thank you" gift certificate inside. Pretty damn cool...
  20. Stefan Looks like I won the Bill Evans set. Payment sent. Looking forward to it.
  21. Really like the new Electric Masada two disc set. I also really like the Satlah trio. They have a nice blend of jazz and the Rad Jewish Culture. And the band's kid sax player (Danny Zamir) has some major chops.
  22. Yeah, SF Jazz 2005 edition looks pretty good. Only problem is, with shipping and tax it comes out to be $45.52. Thats pretty steep for a 2 CD set. Still thinking about it...
  23. Slightly off topic -- I wonder what happened to the Buddy Rich set. It's off of the "Future Projects" list but not in the "Upcoming Releases". Hmm...perhaps lost in the Mosaic void?
  24. As an aside, the following is from the Red Trumpet site concerning this set: "PLEASE NOTE: There has been a list price change from $54.98 to $109.98 and our site has been updated. We will honor the original price for all those that have placed their orders! In other words, although it has changed we do not feel that it is appropriate to cancel your orders! Thanks!" Looks like some people are honoring the original price - incorrect or not. Unfortunatley, I didn't pre-order it.
