  1. I always liked the piano on Roll With The Changes... Were Mahogany Rush the rich man's Rush(what with all that tropical hardwood)? Has there been a Frank Marino thread??????Only joking..........
  2. ELP were the rich man's "The Nice" and made those of us who sat through "Works" time poor!
  3. "Coltrane"(the Impulse one for Out Of This World) "Crescent"-reflective,troubled and beautiful!
  4. I'd like to check all 3 boxes, although the Xanadu soundtrack was all cheesy!Still have "Out Of The Blue" kicking around on tape somewhere(swapped my blue vinyl copy for something silly long ago).I remember a big fuss being made when it emerged they used backing tapes. On the Bev Bevan front,I once had the misfortune of seeing him with Black Sabbath(Ian Gillan singing)...his drum riser was a Stonehenge mock-up(I've since read it was a tongue in cheek thing,a la Spinal Tap,but that didn't come out 'til a year later).Awful gig...and it wasn't Bev's fault.
  5. Like many a "singer/songwriter" Todd's 70's work cast a long shadow over some misguided stuff in the 80's(was it the technology?getting carried away with synths...)-I must admit I lost touch with him and haven't been updated. This has had some good reviews, must check it out.
  6. Great JM profile on BBC 4 this weekend, filmed around his leg amputation opeartion last year(we were spared the op itself),plus appearance on Jools Holland, two songs and a chat. Then we got a solo show from 78.The profile,"Johnny Too Bad",should be turning up on terrestrial in the not too distant future, don't miss it.
  7. Haven't heard this one yet,but last year's "Line On Love" was a beauty.Must check out the Long View thread,it grew on me after an indifferent first play.
  8. Wouldn't quite go that far...just came across an old tape from way back,25 years ago they were "awesome" in my early teens...then I moved on!Nice to see they can still stir strong emotions in some...
  9. Haven't played Double Double You in a good while, great rhythm section(Taylor,Holland,Dejohnette)-I recall finding Brecker a bit "shiny"(as usual) for the music-will have to get a new stylus and check it out again.A favourite is the all-European "Around 6" from 79 with Evan Parker,Eje Thelin,Tom Van Der Geld,J.F.Jenny Clark and the incomparable Edward Vesala. Not sure whether it's made it to CD yet, have a feeling it may have. For the record I like MFLASE in parts but were I to have it on CD,would probably trim it by half-Kayak is well worth checking out if it's still around. Thanks Bev too, for pointing out another set with the MJO,didn't realise it was released. Saw the Widow in The Window group in the 100 Club on Oxford Street in the 80's,they cooked it up far more than they did on disc...brilliant.
  10. It's late, can't be bothered to search,am slumbering in "La Villa Strangiato".May I be so bold as to suggest..nice trio!
  11. I had a short period in my misspent youth amidst the prog scene-E.L.P. started off OK but soon disappeared up their own backsides, they may still be up there,or did I read somewhere that Emerson was doing something "jazzy" these days. I should point out the beats are minimal on "High Water",there's plenty of space for the musicians.
  12. As above, buy the box you won't be disappointed, well priced too...then go from there.
  13. Roy Campbell-Trumpet Steve Swell-Trombone Daniel Carter-Reeds Matthew Shipp-Piano William Parker-Bass Guillermo E. Brown-Drums Thirsty Ear Blue Series style under the guidance of rapper EL-P,who is virtually mute here.Interesting as most things are on the label...and I'm not damning with faint praise there, worth hearing if you get a chance.Horns mixed a bit low tho'.
  14. this music is beyond sound quality issues...we are lucky that we have it at all...magnificent
  15. Update:released here in UK middle of next month.Available in Denmark now,e-mail jazzklubben@sundance.dk for details.Still don't know whether it's a double or single.
  16. Haven't used a Walkman or Discman in years but I'm seriously "toying" with getting one of these babies soon, but here in the UK prices aren't as competitive as I'd like-hanging on for 6 months or so should see a drop-the 20GB looks like it would do the trick.
  17. I've been meaning to check out some of the Pan Asian Arkestra stuff for awhile, but agree with the verdict on "Two Flowers...",stunning.The only other I have is a lovely duo set with David Murray from 2002,"River Of Life" on Asianimprov, well worth checking out.
  18. There are two similarly in depth interviews with the great man in UK's Jazz Review, issues 15 and 51.There's no web archive but try e-mailing them at jazzreview@excite.com.Thanks for this one
  19. They sure knew how to riff...confession over, maybe riffing is a black art-bring me Uri Caine's Bedrock play Lovedrive now!I'd really like to think there are others out there that have seen both these "teutonic titans" and jimmy giuffre's sublime trio with bley and swallow in concert...and been transfixed by both.really!
  20. Stunt is a sub company of Sundance Records who've just opened an office in New Jersey so maybe US distribution isn't far off. Can't find any concrete info on the set but I'd guess release is imminent. The company website is pretty basic but contact them on sundance@sundance.dk and maybe they'll have some good news on the release date.No e-mail for the NJ address yet just this phone and fax number. phone +1 8569316441 fax +1 8569316445. Getting Stunt stuff in the past has been easy here in the UK,but I've been waiting a while on the new Carsten Dahl set.Anyone interested this side should contact gtannerjazzwest@hotmail.com.
  21. It may not be bass and drums at all...
  22. Great to see "Slaves Mass" back in circulation-has "Hermeto" from 72 ever seen a CD issue?
  23. Apparently JG is finishing off a new set for ECM...and it doesn't feature his longtime(and long in the tooth)roadband of Weber,Bruninghaus and Mazur. It's a trio set but the line-up is being kept under wraps. After raising the temperature a little on Vitous' "Universal Syncopations",maybe he'll be further exploring the freer side of his playing.Who would you like to see backing him?I'd go for fellow countrymen Haker-Flaten and Nilssen-Love,they should melt the ice!
  24. Could be wrong but I think it was Charles Lloyd's "Notes From Big Sur"-ECM 1465.Some releases were CD only before this release however such as Terje Rypdal's "Undisonus" and some of the New Series stuff. There was a rumour that Garbarek's "Twelve Moons" ECM 1500 was to come out on vinyl as a limited edition as it was the 500th release but I'm not sure if it ever did.
  25. ...i do expect ms. jones' newbie to be thoroughly underwhelming, however, but if it lets stuff like Passing Ships get out then I don't mind it passing under the wire too!
