  1. I haven't handled many archtops. From recordings, I think I'd like to have one like Jimmy Gourley and a few other cats played. . . sort of a Charlie Christian like model. . . . Jim R knows what I mean. I like the rich and thick sound that they make. . . . I love the players that use them. The only guitar I've owned since the early eighties though is an Ovation Breadwinner, a heavy solid bodied guitar with a weird finish that I love the neck of and the sound. . . but no archtop!
  2. That Prestige set has so much variety in it! I love some of the oddball sessions (okay, that's just my take on them) like Dakar, Wheelin' and Dealin', the Hope session. . . . Everytime I grab a disc from that set I tell myself I should listen to it more often!
  3. I have to say I'm sort of just the opposite, I think their original pop stuff is trite, and I really like the bluesiest and raunchiest of their material, including their covers, better; I think their HEARTS were in that. Growing up when I did you got burned out on even the obscure stuff. . . . I really just can't bear anything that got radio play any longer; I can play what I want to back in my head, and there's darned little of that, and there's so much in my head I wish I could get out! I'm with you Rooster almost in one way: Exile is the only cd I have, and there are some lps inside a Motorola console stereo that I can't get to and that is just fine. . . . I'd be tempted to get Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed one day, and that would suit me for the Stones. "Talk is Cheap" I haven't heard for a long time, but remember it with fondness.
  4. It's on life support, and people are looking for a living will document. . . .
  5. Understood. Take about half the Beatles, for example! Silly stuff! Some people like it for some reason. I'd rather listen to Monchur!
  6. Hey Brandon, lots of other stuff sounds silly to me that you don't seem to think is silly, res gustibus non disputandae sunt!
  7. As an outcast I had to vote for Exile.
  8. I wonder if they are still using scans of actual original lps for covers of this series? (I was thinking that the were, still).
  9. I'm not really sure that the previous discussion decided that. . . anyway, no one seems to know yet! Maybe Kevin B. has heard from Cuscuna but he hasn't elaborated. . . .
  10. I had to overhear a very misinformed long rant about the French from one of those myopic young Republicans this town has a lot of . . . including a lot of misinformation that must be travelling around about the Versailles treaty and even mentioning Napoleanic times! It was pure venomous racism, though this chump had NO CLUE that he was a racist. I just don't get this holier than thou attitude of the times at least in my neck of the wood by propaganda swallowing reactionaries! But then. . . it's probably just always there since Sumer.

I've been thinking about this proposed Select since you mentioned it. . . and can't imagine what they could include that was the right size. . . .
  12. Very good movie. I would say this is a Phil Dickian sort of story (the elements of memory manipulation, and I love the sort of oblique reference to Time Out of Joints paper slips. . .that may simply be my imagination) and a very realistic depiction of what makes relationships work or not work as far as I'm concerned. And genuinely funny, and decidedly well acted by all cast members. Very impressive; the best film from this write yet in my opinion.
  13. I'm torn between "All Blues" and "Freddie the Freeloader." I have an lp copy (which is not pitch correct) that I wore out in the seventies, I have the gold US cd, I have a DSD Sony jewel case version, and I have the box set version. . . . I listen to the DSD Sony most. Amazing sound!
  14. "Baby Take a Chance with ME" maybe? This was a forties Mingus tune. Sounds like it was a fantastic show and glad you went!

Wow, a Telarc I might buy!

Yes she IS Canadian. In the liner notes to one of these it mentions that she found her birth mother and I think found that she is of Indian descent. . . . She is a beautiful woman, indeed.
  17. Whew. I'm not the only nut then! Yeah, I need a bigger house too, and am not going to get one. Though I am scratching my head hard as to where I might put a piano!

I agree Eric, very nice arrangements!

    Geri Allen

Geri was a little older that 21 when that was recorded. . . she was born in 1957 (makes her younger than ME, but just barely, and a little older than Sade).
  20. That is clearly the route I chose when I came to that fork in the road!
  21. I haven't heard either of the two new ones and I probably will get the Bad Plus one of these days. I have to say I liked Bad. I haven't really become a fan of Brad.
  22. Or not. Anyone done as I have: have cd two deep in shelves? It's not an elegant solution but it does double capacity. . . .

I know, I haven't mentioned that trio. Had to leave something for someone to mention! I'm warming up to The Gathering. It's something I didn't like at first, but it's talking back to me. . . .

Yeah, all props to you. . . . But I'm not a discographic reading kind of guy. Her webstie www.reneerosnes.com is a nice browse though!
