  1. Credit goes to another board. I'm just sharing it, but you're welcome.
  2. A few photos I found doing a simple Google search... Glad a lotta big names came out to pay their respects to Hub. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/files/photos/...EMPLATE=DEFAULT http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/files/photos/...EMPLATE=DEFAULT http://gallery.pictopia.com/yahoo/photo/pt...102_2009-01-06/ http://gallery.pictopia.com/yahoo/photo/pt...101_2009-01-06/ http://newshopper.sulekha.com/photos/slide...rs/4/616242.htm

  4. Yet another sign of the times, folks...*sigh* It's practically a 3-minute walk from my workplace to over there. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?.../BAFN154UV2.DTL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stacey's Bookstore closing down in S.F. Matthai Kuruvila, Chronicle Staff Writer Wednesday, January 7, 2009 Like other independent book sellers, Stacey's had been hurt over the past decade by the rise of national chains, like Barnes & Noble, and Web-based booksellers, such as Amazon.com. The store's general manager, Tom Allen, said sales had dropped 50 percent since March 2001. But the final blow was the crumbling economy, which hit hard during the holidays. Stacey's sales in the fourth quarter of 2008 plummeted 15 percent from the same period in 2007. "That in itself would not have spelled the end," said Allen. "But it came on top of several years of more gradual decline." The store was founded in 1923 by John W. Stacey in the historic Flood Building on the corner of Market and Powell streets. Stacey specialized in medical books, a niche that made him a rarity at the time, Allen said. Over the years, the store would build its reputation as a home for technical books for professionals. It would expand, establishing other Stacey's Bookstores in Palo Alto, Modesto, Richmond, Cupertino, Los Angeles and San Bernardino - though the current Market Street location is now the last one standing. In 1947, Stacey's started a series of professional books that included some of the first books on computers, a status that Stacey's claims earned it recognition in Publishers Weekly as "the most modern bookstore in the country." It moved to its current location, at 851 Market St., in the 1950s, when it also became a general interest bookstore. Even today, the store has sections on engineering, chemistry, construction manuals, and complex math and science texts, though they only account for 15 percent of the sales. Allen said the era when technical books were obscure has vanished. In many cases, "information available on the Web has made it unnecessary to buy a book on a technical subject," said Allen, who has worked at the store for the past 11 years. The store's distinct location, on the edge of San Francisco's Financial District, gave it an unusual customer base. While suburban bookstores might have their busiest times on weekday evenings or weekends, Stacey's thrived on the lunch hour crowds. Still, as word trickled out Tuesday evening, customers said they were stunned by the news. "I'm devastated," said Melissa Davis, 37, who had picked up Spanish and Italian language CDs and an Italian grammar book and has shopped at the store regularly for eight years. When other independent bookstores closed, Davis vowed to shop at Stacey's more. Still, she wondered how Stacey's survived. "I guess they're hit by it as well," said Davis, a San Francisco resident. Now, she hopes that a community effort will help save it, similar to what happened with Kepler's Books in Menlo Park. Davis said independent bookstores make sure that there's a diversity of opinion, and not one that's dictated by corporate mandates. "If you lose an independent bookstore, you're losing an independent voice," she said. John Himel picked up a book on digital video and another on internal medicine. The former electrical engineer said he feels like the store's closing reflects a shift in how society views learning. "Books are the greatest obsession," said Himel, 43, a San Francisco resident who now works as an elderly caretaker. "You must have books to think and improve your life." Igor Royzen understands that people can buy books on the Web. But the chess enthusiast is always amazed at how every time he went to Stacey's, there was a book on chess that he had never seen before. "Yeah, you can do it on the Web, but it takes away from human interaction," said Royzen, 33, a computer programmer from Daly City. Standing in the third-floor reading area, which overlooks Market Street, Royzen added, "people can also sit here and enjoy a wonderful view. You don't have that on the Internet."
  5. Wow, was it a mistake in the listing price? I'm still happy with my $47 version, but you really did well! Well, the Ayler box has sold for $35 on eBay the last few times from the ESP store. There's one for $45 right now w/ no takers. http://cgi.ebay.com/Albert-Ayler-Holy-Ghos...1QQcmdZViewItem Funny how the value on it has plummeted so much, that thing was going for at least $75+ last year.
  6. I gave up a while back and they refunded my money. Ah well, guess I should follow suit. At least I got a brand new Ayler Revenant set for a $12 "Buy It Now" price last year on eBay, can't win them all.
  7. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=48484 Has anybody actually gotten their set yet? I'm about to ask for a refund, wasted a perfectly good eBay coupon on this too.
  8. It does a body good. They also have 320 hrs. of Roy Haynes coming up later this month too.
  9. The first pressing of AEC's "A Jackson In Your House/Message To Our Folks" CD from Fuel 2000 has Don Cherry's "Mu First Part/ Mu Second Part" on the disc instead. The liner notes and credits for Miles - Someday My Prince Will Come, for some strange reason, go out of their way to completely exclude Hank Mobley as a participant on I Thought About You even though he blows a nice solo on that track. Unfortunately, so do many discographies too as they relied on Columbia's credits. Too many to name on the BN RVG reissues. And there's this error on the original 16 disc Coltrane Prestige box: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=45292
  10. schaapy got out of the way after doing a couple hours at the start yesterday. Ol' Phil just stopped in the middle of a 25 min. drone about Hub and said "I do go on sometimes, some of you are ready to party for the New Year and here I am giving a lecture." Next, he gave shout outs & said hi to Jimmy Heath & Larry Ridley because they "might be listening".
  11. I just bought this LP today at the Streetlight Records here in Noe Valley, SF that is closing next month. Anyway, I'm listening now. Badass! Yeah......I need to stop in there before they close. NP: "Here to Stay" Don't remember seeing anyone mention the Blakey Riversides, "Ugetsu" and "Caravan". Was just in there a little while ago. Everything was 10% off. Great staff, selection and decent prices for rare stuff. Another sad sign of the times. Will miss their 25% off used sales. At least the Market St. one will stay open.
  12. Yikes, bad news!!! Can current members still do the "Join A Friend" thing? Useta be a member until a long while ago.
  13. RIP Freddie. Currently listening to Coltrane's Ole right now. Hub in fine form there.
  14. Currently spinnin' the OJC of Saying Somethin' w/ the quintet of Williams, Wyands, Workman & Roker.
  15. Seeing as this goes usually for at least $130, whoever won this got themselves the deal of the century. http://cgi.ebay.com/Lady-Day-Complete-Bill...A1%7C240%3A1318
  16. My SF Giants shoulda signed the Iraqi shoe-thrower. He's gotta better arm than anybody in our bullpen. As consolation for missing out on C.C., we get another year of Jack Taschner & Edgar Renteria. Sigh, can you say another fifth-place finish in the NL West, Brian Sabean?
  17. I wonder how many of the big boxes they actually have in stock. It's almost too good to be true.
  18. PM sent on: Young Men From Memphis, Down Home Reunion (UA) Booker Little, George Coleman, Louis Smith, Calvin Newborn, Phineas Newborn, Frank Strozier Yusef Lateef (Cadet) Houston Person, The Gospel Soul Of (Savoy) Chicago Scene (Argo) Curtis Amy, Mustang (Verve) Buck Clayton, Songs for Swingers (Columbia (six eye)) Dave Brubeck featuring Gerry Mulligan, Blues Roots (Columbia)
  19. It was one of those Series that could've gone either way. The mini-game last night made me feel the ending was kind of bogus, but hey, it's what Selig & Co. decided, so congrats to the Phils.
  20. http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2008-1...hs_N.htm?csp=34 Chicago police find SUV, body in search for Hudson's nephew By Thomas Frank, USA TODAY CHICAGO — Police said Monday the license plate on a white SUV containing a child's body matches the vehicle listed in the Amber Alert issued for Jennifer Hudson's missing nephew. "The vehicle that was discovered is the vehicle that was being sought in conjunction with the investigation and the vehicle that was subject of the Amber Alert. It's a 1994 white Chevy Suburban. It was bearing the Illinois plates that were the subject of the search," Chicago police spokesman Daniel O'Brien said. "There was a body discovered in the rear seat of the vehicle. Identification of the body will be done by the Cook County medical examiner," he said. The body in the SUV is that of a young black boy, authorities told the Associated Press. The identity of the body has not been disclosed by police. Julian King hasn't been seen since Friday. That's when Hudson's mother and brother were found shot to death in their home. Authorities issued an Amber Alert for the 7-year-old and were looking for a 1994 white Chevrolet Suburban. Julian is the son of Jennifer Hudson's sister, Julia Hudson. Police on Sunday transferred custody of a "person of interest" in the killings to state authorities. Hudson and her family offered a $100,000 reward Sunday for the safe return of her nephew. Chicago police intensified their search for the child Sunday. Hudson joined the effort, posting on her MySpace blog two photos of her nephew, Julian King, in the brown and orange shirt he was last seen wearing. She urged anyone with information to contact authorities and to "please keep praying … that we get Julian King back home safely." The only person named in connection with the case is William Balfour, 27, the estranged husband of Hudson's older sister, Julia Hudson. Balfour is a "person of interest" and was named as a suspect in an AMBER Alert issued Friday, Chicago police spokeswoman Monique Bond said. Balfour has not been charged in the shooting death of Hudson's mother Darnell Donerson, 57, and older brother Jason Hudson, 29. Julian was reported missing Friday by his mother, Julia Hudson, 31. Police fanned out across the neighborhood Sunday, posting flyers with Julian's photograph. "The community is a huge part of any investigation, particularly when it involves a small child and a homicide," Bond said. Residents placed flowers and stuffed animals by the chain-link fence along Donerson's home. "This family has been in the community for a very long time. You can imagine why it's hit so close to home," Bond said. Even after Jennifer Hudson became a star, her mother and brother stayed in a modest three-story home. The community's median household income is $31,400. "Somebody is always getting shot or killed," neighbor Cornell White said. But White wasn't surprised Hudson's family stayed. "Not everybody is about money. Her mother's lived there all her life, so she chose not to move," White said. Jennifer Hudson "always came back home" to visit. Hudson, 27, won an Oscar in 2007 for her role in Dreamgirls, recently released a self-titled album and stars in the new movie The Secret Life of Bees. The slayings stunned the entertainment world. "Poor Jennifer," producer Quincy Jones said Saturday outside a benefit in Los Angeles. "Nobody can talk to her. Everybody is trying to call her. We just have to pray for her." Outside the New Calvary Light Pentecostal Church across the street from Donerson's home, Rev. Arthur Reed used the message board to urge the public to "Help find Julian King." Last year, the board flashed Oscar congratulations to Hudson.
