Wow, that's just insane! They will probably be sold out in a few days. I wonder why Zweitausendeins is doing this, those Fantasy boxes were available for about $5/CD for the last couple of years, and to my knowledge Fantasy does not intend to put out new remastered versions.

Other RTE/Europe1 recordings have been reissued by Laserlight as well. Yesterday I was at the FNAC in Brussels and saw a Miles Davis 1973 concert and a CD with two Jimmy Giuffre recordings from 1960 and 1965, for 6 Euro each. Both have been available before on french labels, but at a higher price. I have the Giuffre set and while the music is good (the 1965 session is slightly out), listening is marred by the intolerant behaviour of the Paris audience (which also whistled during Coltrane's more explorative 1960 solos).

Yes, the local Zweitausendeins stores always have CDs that are not listed online. I only know their Munich shop, the jazz "department" is only a small corner in the room, but packed with incredible bargains. I´d say they have the lowest prices worldwide (and it includes 16% VAT). Many box sets are available for $5/CD.

This is horrendous indeed, and looks like a mistake. In my country (Luxembourg) I have to pay 19% customs fee on small shipments valued above 22 Euro (from a company) respectively 45 Euro (from an indidual). This includes VAT. A lot of shipments slip though customs, although controls have gotten much tighter lately. The customs webpage mentions EU legislation, so the rules may be the same for all EU countries. http://www.etat.lu/DO/petitsenvois.htm One problem I had in the past was with shipments from the US made by Parcel services. They arrived at Frankfurt airport, the EU centre of the parcel company, where a german subsiduary made the customs declaration and charged me 20 Euro for this service, in addition to the customs fee. I had to pay more than 60 Euro for an Andrew Hill Mosaic that I auctioned for $250. That's why I always request to have things sent by regular airmail.

That website surprised me. I thought that Minor Music stopped business already a few years ago. Some of the "classics" from the 90's could be found as cut-outs and often turn up in second hand stores in Germany. I haven't seen new releases in shops for a long time. Or maybe I just didn't notice, because the recent albums are by less known artists. The Inakustik webshop is probably not up-to-date. I can put other CDs in the shopping basket, but not the Ellis/Parlan disc. When clicking "Bestellen" (Order), the shopping basket shows up, but the CD is not added.

I have a few CDs from this spanish "Blue Note collection" from 1997, a box of about 30 CDs. I found them for $5 per disc. Unfortunately not "True Blue". They all have these odd blue covers

This discussion has already taken place multiple times on the BNBB. I don´t want to repeat the arguments, but I must point out that those imports can be prohibited. The CDs are only legal in countries that have a 50 year copyright on sound recordings. It is of course not forbidden for US customers to order those CDs from european online shops, but it should not be a problem to prevent the big US stores from selling them. It seems to be easier for the US industry to pressure EU legislators than to enforce their rights against US retailers.

I'm wondering what will be on this DVD. According to several reports from this concert, Miles quit the stage after less than half an hour. The title "Call it anything" was released on a french CBS LP that was briefly available. I just listened to track 2 from Golden Circle Vol.1. My guess (not knowing anything about recording technique) is that the mic capturing the ride cymbal was placed too close to the center of the cymbal. Maybe it was put under the cymbal. The sound Kevin mentions reminds me of one of those big chinese vertical cymbals (don't know the english word), just higher pitched. It definitely changes with Moffett's playing and not with the bass notes.

The only CD that I got rid of and bought again later is Jimmy Giuffre - Free fall. I bought it after I got the wonderful 1961 2CD set on ECM. Free fall sounded ugly and incoherent in comparison and I traded it because I was sure I would never like it. Since then I have become a big Giuffre fan, bought the Mosaic set and many other CDs. When I saw a Sony promotion on amazon.fr (midprice CDs for 7 Euro) I couldn't resist getting Free Fall again, as it was the only important Giuffre album missing in my collection. As I have listened to a lot of avantgarde classical and jazz since I first heard Free fall, I enjoy it now, although it remains one of the more "difficult" Giuffre sessions.

"Teo" is one of my favourite Miles tunes, although I prefer the live versions from the Blackhawk and Carnegie Hall concerts. But I agree that this album is underrated, just as "Seven steps to heaven". When exactly was it originally issued? Maybe this could have something to do with this.

I have already posted my comments on the BNBB. In my view there are issues with the sound. I can only compare the Mosaic to the "Some other Stuff" and "Destination out" Connoisseurs (also remastered by Ron McMaster). Both sessions sound clearly better on the Connoisseurs. McMaster seems to have tried to eliminate all tape hiss, because the new remastering sounds completely hiss-free on quiet passages. But he has also cut off the overtones. It sounds artificial and processed. "Evolution" and "One step beyond" are the best sounding sessions in the set. So I wouldn't recommend the Mosaic to those wanting a sound upgrade. As far as the music is concerned, it is essential of course.
