  1. What would that be? Music is now digital data, on CD or in computer files. There are no other possibilities to distribute digital data than on a physical medium or a data file. Streaming digital data is another option, but that's a different way of selling content (on demand listening). One important difference between CDs and downloads that many people ignore is the fact that CDs can be resold, while downloads cannot. For that reason, downloads should be much cheaper than CDs.
  2. BTW, those figures look strange. Jazz sales are down from 2.6 million $ (2007) to 1.1 million (2008). At the same time, classical sales have fallen from 2.3 to 1.9 million. - Jazz sales higher than classical sales (in 2007)? Hard to believe. - I can't imagine how jazz sales would drop by 60% in only one year (2007-2008) Maybe there is a problem with categorizing the music, so that the figures are not really comparable.
  3. Have you tried the Repair funtion of the installer?
  4. Imagine that you buy a book (the old-fashioned type made of paper) at a brick and mortar bookstore. Some time later, the store gets to know that the book was not duely licenced and is therefore considered counterfeit. A store clerk breaks into your appartment, gets the book from your bookshelf, puts the price you paid in cash onto your table and leaves with the book. That's what happened on the Kindle. In the non-virtual world, a store that sold counterfeit goods has to pay damages to the rightholder, but cannot claim the goods back from his customers. It's the customers who have the right to get their money back from the store, but it's their decision.
  5. You just have to select the bookmark and tick the "Show on personal bar" option, which will put the favicon and title of the bookmark on your personal bar in Opera. If you want to save space on the personal bar, you can remove the page title from the bookmark, leaving just the icon. It's like having a TV remote control with station logos instead of numbers on the program buttons These settings are saved in your Opera bookmark file (opera.adr), so if you transfer the file to another Opera installation (other PC), the same bookmarks will be on your personal bar on that computer as well.
  6. In Germany, almost every federal Land has it's own public radio station, and some of these stations have their own jazz band (big or smaller), which have always been among the driving forces of the german jazz scene, as well as an interesting source of employment for national talents, just as radio symphony orchestras are for classical musicians. An essential document of the work of such a radio band is the ECM collection "Atmospheric Conditions Permitting" with recordings by the Jazzensemble des Hessischen Rundfunks, with many international guests: http://www.ecmrecords.com/Catalogue/ECM/1500/1549.php
  7. "Captain, I've found an unlicensed copy of Don Quixote"
  8. I don't really understand what was going on there, and the excessive outrage. Where I live, families own temporary grave concessions, which have to be renewed every 20 or 40 years. If it is not renewed, the grave is emptied and the cemetary space resold to another family. So abandonned graves automatically disappear. If cemetary personel wanted to illegally resell graves which are still covered by a valid concession, they would have to find graves which seem abandonned (no more visits) and remove the name. If there were visitors (at least once a year, for All Saints' Day), they would immediately find out about the fraud, since the grave has disappeared. So what I don't understand is why there are victim families who now want to have bones of people who died a long time ago identified by DNA, when they did not care to visit the grave previously. Concerning the "reverence for dead bodies", I'm with Jazzmoose. Doesn't "dust to dust" mean that the remains become part of the earth and are not meant to be conserved indefinitely? As the far as the grave as a memorial is concerned, the temporary concession system (here in Europe) means that those who don't want to keep a grave will lose it after some years. What's the point of a memorial that nobody cares about?
  9. According to this page, clickandbuy purchases could be used by thieves to test if the credit card works: http://community.contractwebdevelopment.co...edit-card-fraud This would explain why the fraud only involves very small amounts.
  10. It could be that ClickAndBuy is a popular target for fraudsters to make use of stolen credit card details without any risk of getting caught, since it usually involves transactions which require no shipping address (online services, downloads). If the buyer manages to hide his real IP address (use of several proxy servers), he is almost impossible to trace.
  11. Click and buy is a reputable company that has been active for years. Many german newspapers use it for small payments (purchase of article or magazine downloads). http://clickandbuy.com/US/en/merchantportal/references.html It rather looks like someone used your credit card details to buy stuff from them. Usually they request the CVV number from the card (the three-digit number printed on the back). If that was the case, I would be worried about the safety of the card, since someone might have all the releavant data to make online payments with it.
  12. Wow, that Daisy gun ad seems to come right out of Mad Magazine.
  13. The previous Analogue Productions SACD reissues of popular Riverside, Contemporary or Prestige albums (check my link above) have been around for many years (and some still seem to be available), so I don't think the Blue Note SACDs will sell out that quickly. I just ordered two of them at CD Pacific, for a total cost of $48, i.e. 18€ per disc (excluding customs fees, which are usually not claimed here).
  14. These SACDs are an off-spring of the 45rpm LP reissue series by Analogue Productions. They are mastered by Steve Hoffman. They've been released a couple of months ago already but were first only available at a few "audiophile" stores, at a price of $30. Here's a list of all Analogue Productions/Blue Note SACD titles which have been released or will be released shortly (at the bottom of the list): http://www.sa-cd.net/alltitles/51 The one's I've heard are a huge sonic upgrade over the RVG CDs, not so much because of the higher resolution (with a SACD player), but because of the mastering. The sound is much more natural. The "Hootin' 'N Tootin'" SACD contains the extra session as well (14 tracks total)
  15. Mal Waldron played "Beat it" on his 1983 album "Breaking new ground"
  16. As far as railway is concerned, this must be a typically british obsession. My father worked for the Luxembourg railways, where he was responsible for equipment. Several times per year, he received visits from members of british railway fan clubs, who requested to see specific locomotives which were missing from their collection of pictures. They wanted to take pictures of each individual locomotive, although many of them were identical except for the serial number. If one locomotive was stationed in another part of the country, they would take a 2 hour trip just to get a picture. They weren't interesting in any sightseeing, even railway-related. The only thing that counted was to travel to complete their collection of pictures. I was once an anorak too, in the late 80's, when I discovered jazz mainly through the ECM label, and I wanted to have a discography of all ECM albums. Instead of simply requesting a list from the label, I went thought the jazz section in record shops and wrote down the 1xxx numbers and titles of all ECM albums I could find. With the internet, such obsessions can now be pursued in a much more discrete way ...
  17. Many download stores are now selling 320kbs MP3s, which are not much smaller than lossless files. The reason why they don't go lossless but stick to MP3 is compatibility. A 320kbs MP3 sounds almost as good as lossless, and can be used on every player, whereas FLAC or other lossless files can only be played on a limited number of devices. But from a technical point of view, it would make more sense to sell downloads as lossless (for hifi fans) and 192 or 256kbs MP3s (for people who need to save memory space). 320kbs MP3 isn't entirely satisfying for none of these groups.
  18. I use MP3s only on my portable player, for which the sound quality (if >192kbs) is good enough, and where file size is still an issue (8GB flash memory). On my hifi system, I only play lossless files.
  19. I have removed the Home Page button from my browser, because I never used it. I also don't want the browser to open a specific page when I start it up. I don't need to have Google as home page, because there is already a Google search field in the browser interface. The Opera browser has a useful "Speed Dial" feature, with 9 favourite websites displayed in the background when a new tab is opened: http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2007/04...-speed-dial.ars Most of the time, I use bookmarks of my 15-20 favourite pages which I have placed on a seperate bar in the bowser window (just the favicons, to save space).
  20. That's what I thought too. Concerning this CD reissue (which I only got aware of now), does it contain one 37 minute track without a fade out pause in the middle? The fact that the piece is interrupted on the vinyl really speaks against reissuing it on LP (which isn't an option anyway, for economic reasons). http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:fbftxq95ldke
  21. Yes, that was Jimbo. US Open semi-final in 1991 at age 39. In the quarter final, he won against Aaron Krickstein in a 4 hours 41 minute match. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Connors
  22. Windows Media Player doesn't play DVDs "out of the box". I would recommend using a different player, such as the already mentioned VLC, or Media Player Classic (my personal favourite). Both are free. http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_Classic.htm There is no risk in installing these players. You'll be able to use all of them alternatively.
  23. The most attractive matches will be shown on the best courts, but the look of the players is just one factor of attractiveness, among others (famousness, style of play, nationality). A british player has more chances of playing on the centre court, even if she and her opponent are ugly.
  24. Given Universal's share of the music market, it's possible that competition authorities will force them to make similar offers to other ISPs.
