  1. I know that Matthew Shipp is supposed to be the somekind of great player, but after listening to Multiplication Table a couple of times, I cannot understand the hype. AMG gives this a great review, but, to my ears, the cd is way overblown. Seems like Shipp wanted to make a "big statement" with Multiplication Table and it did not work. I usually enjoy remakes of standards but "C Jam Blues" and "A Train" are just too clever for their own good. Much perfer Shipp when he's not making a Grand Artistic Statement.

  2. Been on a huge Cecil Taylor binge lately and I have a chance of getting the The Complete Candid Recordings of Cecil Taylor and Buell Neidlinger for about $150.00. So my question is: Is it a set worth getting? I know most of Taylor's Candid stuff is out on cd, so should I just get those or does the Mosaic have a bunch of alternate takes that I need? This set I can get is the lp set, if that makes any difference. Opinions wanted. Thanks.

  3. It would be interesting to compare the sound of this LP and the Mosaic Select CD.

Perhaps the release date got pushed back because of the Mosaic?

Sorry Leeway, I was making a joke about how "on time" these Blue Note lps from Classic Records get released. I'm still waiting for my copy of John Jenkins with Kenny Burrell that had a release date of November 2003 :o .

  4. Matthew, sorry to pick on this statement but it's rubbing me the wrong way on a Monday AM...as far as I can see, nobody here has mentioned anything like not buying a CD just because a particular remastering engineer they dislike is involved with it...probably some HAVE said that at some point in time on the board, but nobody in this thread has mentioned it. So again, why the harsh reaction? And why weigh in on a discussion you're sick of?

    I just don't get it.

No problem DrJ, you make good points in your post, and I do agree with you that sound is important, that's why I'm very excited about the upcoming Albert Ayler box from Reverant. Who doesn't want to hear some live Ayler with good sound? I would love a good remaster of Ayler's "Live at Slug's Saloon" but that, I feel, won't happen in my lifetime. So, that is not my beef. I usually do what you suggest -- just stay the heck away from threads that I don't like. It's just this whole McMaster vs. Van Gelder thing has been talked to death. They both have done good work, and some not so good. Why not leave it at that?

  5. I had decided to put an end to my jazz buying spree for the week but on the wy home yesterday I happened to go past one of the secondhand shops and went inside just to look.

And there were all these CDs (with a euros 10 top prize):

Cecil Taylor 'It's In The brewing' on HatArt,

That is just one incredible disk. :tup:tup

  6. I'm with Noj. How can you not pull for an underdog like that?

And anyway, if Mickelson wins, maybe its an omen that this might be the year for a certain star-crossed MLB team. Or two!

Yeah, it would be nice if the Dodgers did win it all this year. That is who you meant, right? ;)

  7. I've just been reading the first 30 pages of this thread & correct me if I'm wrong but  is it safe to assume I really need these discs (if I can find them!)

    ...

Arcana Major / Sonic Tarot Sessions Gianni Gebbia

    YES!

    Order it HERE.

Loved this from the description of the cd:

To make single-card predictions using this CD, Gianni suggests that the listener think of a question, put his or her CD player in shuffle mode, and hit play. "The resulting piece will represent your answer," he says.

    B) Cool B)

Is this cd really that good?

  8. Steve Swell (I saw him live once with Cecil Taylor bi band, and he was probably the best soloist in the band) - I've been planning to check out his stuff - any particular recommendations?

This is the first time that I remember hearing Steve Swell. I'm still at the stage of just picking all the different kinds of cds possible, and listening for artists that I find intriguing. Swell is someone I'm going to have to look out for.

  9. P.S.: Bev Bevan was a bad drummer? The people who say that usually also hate Charlie Watts. 'Nuff said.

Bev and Watts in the same sentence? Bev, of "Evil Woman" dullest druming in any top 40 record, Bevan? I'll see your  , and raise you to :wacko: !

    P.S. :g

  10. ARIC, BEV BEVAN WAS THE WORST DRUMMER IN THE HISTORY OF ROCK. HE SUCKED, THEY SUCKED. BUT HEY, THEY WERE IN A SOUNDTACK FOR A JIM CARREY MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!, SO THAT MUST MEAN THEY RULE DUDE!!!!!!

Now I will return to my normal life and way of thought -- thank you.

  11. I'm about half-way through vol. 1 of Rising Up and Rising Down by William T. Vollman.  I was surprised to learn only 3,500 copies of this have been printed.  It's a very interesting and different read.  Vollman is trying to come to somekind of understanding of violence, and what is justified violence.  It's challenging in the ways he looks at the world and how we live in it.  Kind of depressing, and it's also daunting to know I have 3,300 more pages I get to read  :o .

How is that? I've read about 5 or 6 of Vollmann's books, and have mixed feelings ... I like the books from his "American dreams" novels (the exact name escapes me, but I'm talking about "The Ice-Shirt," "The Rifles," "Fathers and Crows"), but haven't been too keen on the other stuff.

    Also, how much is it?

Not too bad so far. I'm into vol. II right now, the "Case Studies," reading about the "defense of honor" reason for violence. It's very wide-ranging in the examples Vollman sites, and sometimes he doesn't explain those examples enough to make an impact. If you can believe this, I would say it's too early to tell, heck, I've only read about 450 pages  . The cost was $120.00, which is a great deal for seven hardbound volumes. It also comes in a very nice case. I think it's one of those books that any real judgment of its worth cannot be made for a number of years.

  12. Hey, this Anthony Braxton Quartet: (Dortmund) 1976 is a very righteous session. Love Braxton's solo on Composition 23 J, he's just plays the heck out of that alto. George Lewis plays great, everything is great ... but I'm sure you guys already know how good this date is. :excited:

  13. In honor of Easter. To celebrate the fact that I can hear out of my left ear again. And my new found love for the Hat Hut label, I bought a bunch of mid-range Hat Hut cds -- a lot of artists I've never heard before, but, hey, life is an adventure!

-- Clusone 3: An Hour With...

    -- Clusone 3: Rara Avis

-- Franz Koglmann / Lee Konitz: We Thought About Duke

-- Myra Melford & Han Bennink: Eleven Ghosts

-- Richard Grossman Trio: Where the Sky Ended

-- Richard Grossman Trio: Even Your Ears

    -- Anthony Braxton: (Basel) 1977

-- Misha Mengelberg: The Root of the Problem

It'll keep me busy for awhile. B)
