Oliver Nelson shoot-off between early US orange/black stereo and 1976 UK pressing put out by Anchor Records with US sleeve.

The early US version sounds lovely - bags of RVG punch where it counts, excellent dynamics. The UK Anchor Records, which used the HMV tapes I think, sounds also very good indeed, albeit with less punch and a few more pressing glitches. Extremely musical though and benefited from an RCM spin.

I was wondering if I ‘needed’ the new AP version and I guess the answer is probably no. My hunch is that the AP will sound not unlike the Anchor.

I've got a Speaker Corner reissue and it sounds gorgeous.

Go for it. It sounds fantastic ;)

Picked this one up - and the Oliver Nelson. My excuse - it is Xmas.

First impression of ‘Blues..’ is that it sounds amazing. Leaves the old Anchor version for dust. Likely my new ‘go to’ copy now. :tup

Sleeve quality superb too and at least up to Tone Poet standards.

I have a vague memory of that era.

My memories of that time are vague too!  When the LP was originally released, I was in the fifth grade. ;)

Of course, I didn't hear it back then.  I discovered the record a few years ago when I was working on my 70s jazz blog.

It's good music.  All four guys in the band were working for Mongo Santamaria at the time.  I guess Jasmine was a side project.

Verdict - definitive issue, by far the best version of this classic I have heard (don’t have an original). Charlie Mariano never sounded better and the Spanish guitar sound is exquisite.

Yeah I fully agree. Excellent sound.
