What vinyl are you spinning right now??

A lot of early ECMs sound totally different - maybe Eicher hadn't perfected the reverb quotient, or maybe it was because he didn't record all of them at that point. They are often a lot rawer than stuff from the mid-80s onward. Also the US pressings/masterings are rolled off, or seem to be - the German issues are not.

As I mentioned in the Listening thread the other day, Conference of the Birds sounds like shit. But I suppose that was in the air at the time.

Really? How so?

I have a mint German vinyl issue and it sounds excellent to me...

Last Exit ------------s/t--------(Enemy)

Perfect for this Saturday morning - listening with headphones.

You're a tougher soul than me, Clunky. I love Last Exit, but I can't listen to them in the morning. I have to ease into the day, with something like:

jw-bm1965.jpg

Jack Wilson - Brazilian Mancini (Vault mono). Better than the concept-within-a-concept would suggest. Mr. Jobim himself is on guitar, although under a pseudonym. It's good for what it is - not profound, and it's perfect for the amount of attention I want to give it right now.

And it offers a generous 13 minutes of playing time per side!

I admit I only have the CD, but the bass is the typical 70s sound: clear, thin, and rubbery. The drums are distant and tinny. Generally no depth with kind of an odd balance. Maybe I'd be happier with a German LP. But like I said, it comes off as typically terrible 70s production to me. I'd rather it were ECM'd!

I have a US pressing that doesn't sound too great - fairly "dull" although the music is awesome - would prefer the German to compare the sound.

Cecil Payne-----The Connection ---- (Charlie Parker Records) UK stereo

Strong session. Very good pressing in excellent condition, sounding great despite being a "budget" 1962 release.

Weren't those pressed somewhere in Lancashire? I have the feeling that it was something to do with that budget label Everest.

Kenny Wheeler - Around 6 [ECM]

my favourite Kenny ECM. Couldn't resist a vinyl copy in Oxfam this weekend.

That's certainly a great one and in my top few Wheelers as well. Love the opening track and Vesala shines throughout. Started with a USA pressing and now own a Japanese pressing. May one day try a German pressing just for comparisons sake as it is a gem...

The German pressing of that one sounds predictably nice !
