Unambitious, although to be fair, also uninspired.

An under-produced disco record.

From the cover photo I thought he looks very much like Billy Eckstine.

Originally released as Jeremy Steig - Energy (Capitol, 1971).

I dig this.  Steig had a strong run in the 70s.

No doubt, working with Don Alias and Eddie Gomez helps.

Rashied Ali Quintet - First Time Out, Live At Slugs 1967 [Survival Records]

One of those 'lost' recordings where the recording quality might suggest it should have remained so if it wasn't for the energy of the playing involved. Valuable archeology.

I notice HJ’s have got it in stock, along with the ‘Duo Exchange’. Do you recommend them?

'Duo Exchange', absolutely.

'Live At Slugs' dependent on your threshold for bootleg quality live recordings - I tend to find these can add to the enjoyment and this is a case in point. But if you're bothered by distant pianos (except when soloing - it's almost as if someone's moving the mic closer!), overly prominent drummers and horns fading in and out then don't go near it.  To me it sounds like a live recording ESP rejected on the grounds of SQ :D. The music's terrific in most parts, warts 'n' all. Nicely packaged.

Listening now to the new Charles Lloyd live recording '8', the polar opposite in SQ, gorgeous quality and beautiful music

What do you make of 'Legwork' Hutchfan? I've not heard it and didn't realise it was recorded at the same time until I read your blog, so now I'm tempted.

Thanks for that ! Shame these aren’t on CD - would prefer that if the audio quality is compromised.

If you do buy one or both do be prepared for the PayPal shenanigans mentioned in the other thread about them. It may be worth contacting HJ in advance and arranging to PayPal the funds directly rather than through their basket.

Currently spinning side one of "Spring" by Anthony Williams. Picked up this stereo copy last Friday at an amazing estate sale at a loft in downtown Pittsburgh.  There were over 2000 LPs individually priced for sale.  I'll start a thread elsewhere shortly.

Reiner - Iron City, not Windy City. Blue Label, not Red Seal. SURPRISE!!!

The debut recording? It says so.

My ignorance, to be sure, but I was totally unaware of this record until finding it last weekend. You bet I snapped it up, and for less than a fin. Not in the best of conditions to be sure, but those old Masterwork LPs were built for the long haul. Not matter what the noise, the music always comes out on top, loud and (more or less) clear.

It's on a few off-brand "historical label" CDs but that's it? That's a shame.

Since RCA & Columbia are all the same company now, we COULD have both on a single release, and then history, as well as music, would be well-served.

Oh well.

recent pick up. such a wonderful line-up. The music is interesting and the pressing is immaculate. Bought off the strength of Sabir Mateen, Salim Washington and Alex Harding. Never heard of David Durrah but quite enjoyed his playing.
