Image result for stan kenton holman russo charts

Disc 1 and 2

I've had the LP edition for about 5 years and barely played it. Whenever I try to play just about any Kenton I quickly thing other music I'd rather hear! Only picked this up as it was ultra cheap. Perhaps I should give it a try.

Call me crazy, but I think there is some real good music here.

Disks 3 & 4, ‘Polycurrents’ and ‘Genesis’. A perpetual favourite set.

Great writing and playing showcasing Konitz, Schildkraut, Bill Perkins etc. at their best. Stan Levy is on drums.    Q

I like this set too - time to dig it out.

Ok I get it. The Kenton is on the to-be-played pile.

Regarding the Elvin Jones my admiration for this set only grows. There’s quite a bit of depth to it. Mastering could be a tad bolder but it’s more than good enough.

Have dug the Kenton/Holman/Russo LP set for a spin as well, along with the Larry Young LP box.

Pretty happy withe the mastering on the Elvin set. The combination of my cured ear infection and fairly recent upgrading of CD interconnect (big effect) has brought to light a major increase in perception of detail in the recordings, not to mention dynamics. In fact, I am hearing these recordings in a new light.

Some of the later sessions on the Elvin Mosaic are a tad warm and bright. Of their time plus the Sonny Lester effect, I guess.
