Quincy Posted October 17, 2012 Report Share Posted October 17, 2012 Has anyone heard any talk about a new 1971 Winterland boxset or release of 5/30/1971? On the Record Store Day Black Friday release list there was this listed: Grateful Dead Live atWinterland (5/30/1971) Rhino double LP gatefold 7500 I thought a CD reissue might coincide with it since that is what they have done in the past with the Europe '72 Vol. 2 pressing last year and the pressing of Dark Star from the Olympia Theatre show on 5/4/72 that came out this Spring. All I know about is the 180g vinyl release of the May 30th show which will be limited to 7500 copies.. This day seems to be all about limited vinyl to support the independent record stores as Experience Hendrix is releasing a (double) vinyl audience bootleg. And there are a lot of other vinyl only releases planned for the day. Sorry to say I'm not sure whether the Dead's release will eventually be released on CD or as a download. Not subscribing this year either. I'll just go through my Europe '72 box another time and buy whatever they put out from the early years. Still have not listened to any of them! I just stopped by Dead.net and noticed the 1990 boxset has officially sold out on the site. Quincy Posted November 4, 2012 Report Share Posted November 4, 2012 I subscribed for the 1st time. In part it was because 11-17-73 is one of the 4. (Maybe the best Playing sandwich). Also I want 1-22-78 which was hinted at when the series was announced and while of course the odds aren't great that it will be released within the coming year at least it's that much closer. (1-22-78 is a show that any Dead fan should want no matter what the claimed cut off point is). And of all things I shockingly bought the Spring '90 box and loved it! I'm thoroughly a Dead snob whose preference is the Keith & Donna years but I think what made it was there wasn't a single "I Will Take You Home" amongst the 6 shows represented. In the past I typically play 1.5 shows from '89-'90 a year and I'm good, but I had forgotten just how great the songs were during this time, as in 1st set songs at that. Jerry cared and sang his heart out, Phil was in good shape and they were clicking. Even the MIDI most of the time works. Anyway, I'm more receptive of all eras at the moment and it's such an annoyance to pay the postage and not be on vacation or flying for a funeral when these things get announced, so I went the easy route for once. The hint at a '69 or '70 that doesn't circulate also makes me think that maybe they're considering old traders who know where the cuts & patches are and might buy an upgrade. I'm nearly through my third time through the Europe '72 box and after that I'm going to go back to the Dick's Picks with Pigpen. My biggest regret is that I never got to see the band with Pigpen; I first saw them the first tour they did without him. I like some of Bob's songs during the late 80s/90s era but Brent's songs and the use of MIDI are like a magnet pulling me to skip to the next track! Honestly, I was tempted to buy the Spring 1990 set though because that was era was I first heard Dead shows on cassette. The longer trip nowadays to the west coast (once upon a time these were just driven north 430 miles) means that jiggle & jangle loosens them up a little so mine didn't have that scary "clamp of death." I love this period so much I've owned the whole month except the 1st for ages, and no surprise they did a fine job with this official release. The 3 Playing sandwiches are now all released. Yum. It really is as good as it looks too. *I suppose ultimately it doesn't matter much as what circulates sounds great, but Dead official releases have sort of replaced the baseball hall of fame as far as debating interests. While it has a great setlist, why on earth was 10/19/73 released before/instead of..., that kind of thing. mjzee Posted March 27, 2013 Report Share Posted March 27, 2013 I've just finished listening to "Garcia Live: Volume One" and can heartily recommend it. It's a great band; they just jell. Johnny De Foncesca is a much more interesting drummer than Bill Vitt. The tune selection is great, the sound quality is excellent, and each disc flows so nicely. The Relix link mentions a shoulder injury and muscle relaxants being taken. Perhaps it was a combination. The way Phil and fake Jerry (sorry, I can't remember the old DSO guy's real name) react it's not like it wasn't unexpected as they just keep on going. So I wouldn't worry, just another night at the circus. Last year (or the year before) Bobby was accidentally dosed. The band played on.
