What is the appeal the Miles since the originals are easy to find on vinyl?

This is the appeal (excerpted from the jazzmatazz site):

— Seven Steps to Heaven includes previously unreleased alternate takes of "Joshua" and two of "Seven Steps" with Feldman and a rehearsal take of "Seven Steps" with Hancock.

— Miles in Europe with the previously unissued tunes "Bye Bye Blackbird" (16'47) & "Theme" (6'06), plus the unedited versions of "Autumn Leaves" (13'55), "Joshua" (11'36) and "All of You" (16'54)

— The complete Philharmonic Hall concert (12Feb1964), with both sets complete and in performance order

— Miles in Tokyo (14Jul1964), with Sam Rivers on tenor sax

— Miles in Berlin (25Sep1964), with Wayne Shorter on tenor sax; includes a previously unissued version of "Stella by Starlight" (12'54)

— in all, set includes over an hour of previously unreleased music

plus the fact that the Mosaic treatment of the Miles sets have been in extraordinary sound (the ones that I have heardany way) and gorgeous presentation. To me, this is one of the most exciting jazz releases of the year.

I had a cd with other selections from the In Europe concert and they are less than steller compared to what was released by Columbia.

Out takes and rehearsal takes should stay in the vault judging from previous Miles boxes.

If you have the original releases like me and most other Miles fans there is little reason to buy this set. The Japan and Berlin sets were released in a two fer domestic album and the Japan issues are all over EBAY.

The Japan concert and the Europe album feature some quite fantastic performances by Miles and Tony in particular.

This is great music, but for most of us who have this stuff it would be a purchase not of need but of self indulgence.

In other words we will buy it after it goes out of print!

There are a wide variety of opinions about the unreleased material from the box-sets. I, for one, have been very happy with nearly all of it.

The only time I think they might have gone overboard was that very last disc in the "Miles & Gil" set (with all the disjoint takes, and repetitive takes). But other than that, I think all of the unreleased material deserved to see the light of day.

Does that mean all of it is equally valuable?? No, probably not. For instance, I've yet to get totally into much of the "Bitches Brew" set. But then people have said the very same thing about the "Jack Johnson" set --- where I'm just excited by the unreleased material there (on the "Jack Johnson" set), as with any of them!!

So it's really probably a matter of what periods in Miles' career one is the most interested in.

Now that I mention it, 'I' don't yet own the new Gerry Mulligan Mosaic either.

These recent Mosaic releases would lead a person to think Mosaic was in business to make money or something.

I'll be interested to learn how this sounds....The bass on the Verve Elite "Here and Now" was barely audible. It looks like most of the sessions were recorded in the same studio as that particular session.

Malcolm Addey doing the remastering, however, is a good sign.
