Black Lion

The latest mail order catalog from Mole Jazz lists in very small print and at astronomical prices a series of 24 bit remasters from Black Lion.

These includeall three volumes of Monk's The London Collection. There are 36 titles in total including Donald Byrd/Groovin for Nat, Albert Ayler/Witches and Devils, Cecil Taylor/ Silent Tongues and many other thrills.

Are these remasters which have been issued in the US, or new remasters commissioned by DA Music (=Black Lion parent company)?

Has anyone heard these new remasters?

Mole are charging full price (15.99 UKP). Can they be obtained mid price?

Can anyone point to a full online list of these titles? At the moment, only Mole seem to have them.

I was sent a copy of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago's The Spiritual in a trade from the Slovak Republic. It sounds okay but I don't know the original to compare. Has a slipcase though as well as slightly more appealing presentation. Can't really believe that these are meant to sell at full price.

I recently bought the Monk Complete London recordings 3CD box for 10 Euro at www.zweitausendeins.de . This came out in 1989.

Monk, Thelonious "THE COMPLETE LONDON COLLECTION 15.11.71"

(Hackensack, Ruby my dear, Misterioso, Trinkle tinkle, Nice work if you can get it, Lover man u.a.) Mit Art Blakey & Al McKibbon. Black Lion. 3 CDs 9.99 EUR

The sound is very good, some of the best recorded Monk on CD. I don't think the 24Bit versions can improve this very much.

Question: Are either of Charles Tolliver's or Stanley Cowell's Black Lion dates in this list of remastered titles??? (4 total, 2 each.)

I don't think so.

I don't have the list to hadn't but I will check later today.

I don't have a scanner otherwise I'd scan it in.

I am getting the impression some of these are related to 1201 releases, but I haven't been able to check.

I got volume 1 and volume 3 of the London Collection (1201 version) at Daedalus for about $7 each. But they never had volume 2.

Based on this fact, and the fact that the link above does not show volume 2, it is not clear that volume 2 ever came out as a 1201.

I managed to find the da music site. The Black Lion catalogue appears in two parts, here and here.

I amended my own list (above) which is now complete.

These titles seem to be the same as those released on 1201 in 1999, which are also 24 bit remastered, though I don't know if the mastering is the same . Black Lion/DA Music state they are remastered by their extra special German engineers (hopefully not the same ones who handled the OJC20 fiasco ;))

The website says:

"All releases are carefully re-mastered by one of Germany's leading studio engineers (F.Thein) using all his knowledge about the music using today's state of the art technical equipment for the benefit of a new fresh listening experience"

It doesn't however say which tapes they used for this new reissue.

Here is the engineer's website: www.thein.de . This company looks more serious than ZYX, which is mainly releasing pop records.
