jacman
i was digging through a bunch of "Dixieland" CDs at a local used record store when i found this little gem simply titled, "Baby Dodds". i popped it into my car Cd player and low & behold, it's an instructional recording. from the liner notes i've gleaned this: it was recorded by Bill Russell in the mid 40's, and is a combination of several 10" recordings. Russell issued 3 volumes and this CD is volumes 1,3, and a previous unreleased volume 4. volume 2 was omited because it was, except for one song, repeated in other volumes. it really is a remarkable recording. the music is great, but the lessons and anecdotes are worth their weight in gold (and then some). jazzbo
Yeah, I've had this since the cd release. VERY COOL.
LAL
Uh oh. Don't let P.D see the term 'Dixieland' else there'll be flying cymbals hereabouts. Haven't got this album but will definitely be getting it since all of the American Music releases I've acquired (mainly the Yellow labels) contain top notch New Orleans jazz. JSngry
"Playing For The Benefit Of The Band" should be ingrained into the subconscious of every musician alive from now into eternity, by force if necessary. For real.
jazzbo
Yeah for real. I'm solidly behind that. That was what I always tried to do as a musician. And those who couldn't seem to pay attention to that were the root cause of almost all my bad band memories!
mikeweil
I have part of that on LP. Found it remarkable, all the more sonsidering the time it was recorded - he really had a message. Agree with Jim on the necessary forces.
