connoisseur series500 Posted August 25, 2004 Report Share Posted August 25, 2004 I was reaching for my Diet Coke in a McDonald's takeout cup at lunch today when Grey's thread came to view with the words, "JRVGs" and "Cheap!" intermixed. It was enough to send my pop flying and I spilled half the drink on my work laptop. I tell you, it should have been filmed!! Actually, my computer was in the process of shutting down when I spilled the drink. The cup almost collapsed in my hand, and it took my best effort to prevent the whole thing from dumping on my laptop. Anyway, I sent the machine out to the "tech support" department via intermail. Does anybody know whether the computer is now ruined? It certainly wouldn't start after the drenching. I grabbed a bunch of paper towels and tried to dry up everything, but some liquid came out from the bottom of the machine...yuck! I mean, the keyboard, the motherboard, memory, the hard drive, other drives? The sugar/water mess could have gone anywhere in there. My Dad's homeowner's insurance covered his computer. I sponged up what I could with paper towels and then turned the machine over to see a little liquid coming out of the back somewhere--I think it was one of the drives on the side actually. Big Wheel Posted August 25, 2004 Report Share Posted August 25, 2004 Pouring liquid on a laptop keyboard is about the worst thing you can do to it. When PC Computing magazine used to do their annual laptop torture tests, they froze, baked, and dropped the computers from a few feet off the ground. Most showed no ill effects. When they got to the spill test (an ounce or two of hot coffee right between the G and H keys), at least half of them were screwed for good. Good luck.
