Christiern
I know it's unfair to have Louis with this crowd, so I left him out.
Guest Mnytime
Without Satchmo this actually is hard. Had to go with Bix who I would follow up with Roy, Charlie, Bunny.
jazzbo
I went with Bubber Miley. I like all these cats tremendously though.
EKE BBB
I took BIX, but could have taken Bubber, or Roy, or Rex...
Chuck Nessa
When I saw the header I hoped Pops had been left out. Thanks. Tough choice (it would have been easier for me if you included Henry Allen), but I decided on Roy for sentimental reasons.
Alexander Hawkins
This one is too hard! I went Joe Smith, because I was looking down the list for Arthur Whetsol, and see some kind of resemblance in their playing. I'll be saying my 'Hail Maries' all day for not choosing Bix, Miley or Rex Stewart, though.
paul secor
I went with Jabbo, since he amazes me everytime I listen. I should admit that I'm relatively unfamiliar with Muggsy Spanier and Bunny Berigan. There's always more to listen to, and perhaps enjoy and learn from. connoisseur series500
Went with Bix, though I haven't heard all the musicians listed.
WD45
I am going with Buck Clayton. I would have put Wild Bill Davidson, had he been up there. Love that guy.
AfricaBrass
I went with Bix too. I really enjoy his playing. I still need to get that Mosaic set. I've been digging the Tram series on The Old Masters. I really need to hear more of this stuff. There are some great trumpeters on this list. I feel guilty not getting to pick them too. It's great that we're starting to talk about some earlier jazz. I don't know as much about it as some of you, but I get a great deal of pleasure listening to it. Alexander
This is one tough choice. I like all of the men listed above, but I had to go with Bix.
Jazzmoose
The fact that this poll was easy for me probably means I need to dig back into this earlier period of jazz, but while I like Bix, I had no problem zeroing in on Roy. Absolutely awesome!
JSngry
Roy. Just because. ALTHOUGH...Buck could get a vote of mine, as could any of these guys (and Red, and Buddy Anderson).
sidewinder
It would have been Henry 'Red' but - in his absence - it's between Roy and Buck. Roy by a gnat's whisker ... B) 'Hot Lips' Page would figure well up there on my list too .. Edited May 19, 2003 by sidewinder

Dan Gould
I went with Buck but I really wanted to see Sweets on the list.
jazzbo
Man, there are so many great trumpeters before bebop. Tommy Ladnier, Freddie Jenkins, Taft Jordan and Dick Cathcart () are favorites of mine that don't get talked up. EKE BBB
Another two trumpet players with merits to be there: -Arthur Whetsel -Bunk Johnson
J Larsen
Glad to see I'm no longer the only one who voted for Buck! It was a tough choice, but I felt I owed him the vote for all the great listening I've gotten out of his Mosaic.
king ubu
Tough choice! But no voting as I know nothing (yet) of Berigan and Spanier, and not much by others listed. The Buck Clayton Mosaic gave me many hours of listening pleasure, Roy's great anyway, this I happen to know (or think I do...) - BRING US THE COMPLETE VERVE ROY ELDRIDGE MOSAIC soon please! Bubber Miley would be another favorite. Bix I know so far only from the two ooold Legacy CDs, so some pleasing experience waiting for me when I'll finally get the Mosaic! ubu
catesta
YO QUIERO COOTIE! Word! Little jazz got my vote. Edited May 20, 2003 by catesta
Brad
I voted for Roy but there are many worthwhile candidates there. Buck is tremendous. And, unfortunately, I don't know everybody on the list and I probably should have voted for Bix, he was so influential, but there it is. BruceH
Very, very, very tough choice. For me is was between Roy, Bix, Clayton, Berigan, Stewart. No Ray Nance? But I must say: GO ROY!!!
