Billy Mitchell re-issues?

Am looking forward to the Verve re-issue. I've been on the lookout for stuff with Mitchell on it since hearing him on the Thad Jones Mosaic.

I found a used LP of Al Grey's SNAP YOUR FINGERS (Argo) a short time ago and there's a couple of mighty fine Mitchell solos on that album. Not sure if that's the one you're talking about, Weizen. I don't know if it has been re-issued yet, but it should be. Hutcherson's also on it, while Donald Byrd and Herbie Hancock sit-in(?) with the band on a live date on side two. Worth searching for.

What a timely thread! I just happened to grab a homemade two-fer of "A Little Juicy" and "This is Billy Mitchell" from the shelves this morning. Talk about timing.

Weizen, I have been looking for original CDs of this material in the many years since someone thoughtfully made this burn for me and I haven't had any luck. Worse news is that this CD-R compilation doesn't want to play in my car anymore! I wonder if it's the media? I'm going to try extracting the audio using EAC and make a new burn... keeping my fingers crossed.

Since these two sessions fit onto one CD, I wonder why didn't Verve reissue the two of them together?? I doubt we'll ever see "A Little Juicy" any other way.

Later,

Kevin

Snap Your Fingers will be reissued by Verve later this year, at least according to Alan Lankin's Jazzmatazz site: http://home.att.net/~lankina/jazz/upcoming...s.html#upcoming

Kevin, that faulty burn isn't a 'South-of-the-Mason-Dixon- Line' Special is it? :o

I believe this burn is from Louis Armstrong's great grandson... well, the Armstrong part is right. :D Strangest thing about this CD-R is that it's not done on a Klone, which is what he usually uses. It looks like maybe this is one of those Phoenix discs with the blue dye. Maybe my car doesn't like the blue dye?

Good news. The extraction to my hardrive went with no errors. I'll write them back to another CD-R and see how it goes.

Later,

Kevin

I wonder if there will be any bonus tracks or 'complete' cuts from the original album. There are some obvious edits in some of the studio and live tracks on the original LP.

Sonny Stitt's New York Jazz will be in the same June 10 batch as the Mitchell: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...996&Style=MUSIC,

and so will be Cannonball Adderley's EmArcy sessions with strings: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...996&style=music

and Lee Konitz' Motion (the single CD, not the triple album): http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...ic&frm=lk_jzmtz

Just thought I'd mention it :)

Yeah, I'm pretty stoked about the upcoming schedule of Verve reissues.

In addition to these titles, the weeks after will bring us 2 others that I'll pick up the day they're issued

*Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges*

*The Easy Way* by Jimmy Giuffre

That CD Universe listing is completely messed up. Fortunately this is not actually the strings album (which was reissued on a twofer a few years ago), but the octet album (MG 36043) that was his debut album for EmArcy. It has not been on CD before, at least not in the US. Now only In The Land Of Hi-Fi remains.

Strange to see Konitz’s Motion again. It must be its third release on CD in the US.

By the way, did anyone notice that Verve changed one title in this batch? They originally announced Pepper Adams Plays the Compositions of Charles Mingus as being part of this batch, but they have since replaced it with John Klemmer’s Involvement.

I hope you're right... The tracklisting on the CDUniverse page indeed belongs to EmArcy MG 36043.

I'm stunned to see Klemmer's Involvement on the current Verve list. I never thought it would be reissued. This was his first recording, is a fine record overall, and contains some of the best Wilbur Campbell on record. About a year after this date I heard Klemmer in a club with Sam Thomas, Malachi Favors and Hal Russell. At least 4 different segments of the Chicago jazz scene on that gig.
