I can't find the actual auction (it used to be archived) but I found the text from the auction:

"Ultra-rare commemorative trophy from self- styled "official" music honorary organization, issued to quasi-prominent and appropriately sheepish musician. Statuette approx. 4" x 4" x 16", made of unidentified metal alloy mounted on a marble base (see picture below). Inscribed. Representing as it does a craven lapse of taste, judgement and self respect on his part, the owner is eager to be rid of this appalling artifact ASAP. Cheaply made and intrinsically worthless in all important ways, this little baby will nevertheless be obscenely expensive to its next owner - making it the ultraperfect collectible icon of its age. Hefty reserve price. Note: A companion piece (identical but inscribed to owner's colleague) may possibly become available in conjunction with this statue to the discriminating and well-heeled collector whose bid demonstrates that "price is truly no object". May consider partial trade of valuable goods and services."

Funny stuff!

Thanks for the props, guys ..

Even though I'm fairly certain that Slide ( possibly McNeely ) will probably win this, it's a trip just being considered in such august company ..

I'm just happy to have gotten this far with the first CD of my own.. after some 38 years of writing

widget cheeze-whiz music for the suits ..

This 'll really keep the fire lit to do the next CD ..( seven charts done so far! )

geez ..an overnight success ..at 67 :w

All kidding aside, Phil, I'll be rooting for you.

And remember, an award tucked away does your career no good. Whether you win or not, you have to capitalize on it while it's fresh. I think I mention how a friend of mine (Geoffrey Holder) took his Tony award straight to a PR person and landed several jobs as a result of the publicity, one of which paid the PR person's fee. The rest of the Tony-winning cast (we're talking WIZ here) had a good old time celebrating, but there was no boost to their career.

I'm also very glad Donny McCaslin is finally getting a nod. He is a killer player and the fact that Maria has him in her band is testament to his abilities as a soloist.

I really dug Scofield's solos on Enroute but a lot of people I talked to in radio and even people who know jazz, didn't care for it. What a band? What more can you ask for than Bill Stewart and Steve Swallow with John Scofield?

The vocal category makes me sick to my stomach with whom they've chosen. What about Tierney Sutton or Rene Marie or Shirley Horn?

I am sure that you would exclude Andy Bey from your comments. Good to see him finally getting some recognition.

Agree about the rest though, especially a certain young Brit (and I'm English).
