Christmas; What did you ask for?

Recommended Posts

I gots me an ipod! the 40G variety. Ahhhhhhh, but it is for PCs. I have a Mac. So return it goes..........

Bummer. Return lines suck.

We're having the extended family(families) Christmas later today, but my wife and Zora and I just enjoyed our little festivities. Zora got some much needed clothes as well as small Elmo and Cookie Monster stuffed toys. Funny, she seemed to prefer the bows and ribbon more than the toys. :)

I bought my wife some new active wear (and very sexy active wear at that, if I do say so) and a nice book on organizational ideas for the house (kind of for both of us) and also new earthenware (definitely for both of us) since our dishes have been driving us both crazy.

She got me some sweats (MSU sweatshirt! yeah!), some steak knives which I needed, and a new cutting board! Woo hoo! Oh yeah, and a video from the New Yankee Workshop on how to build this awesome bookcase which I'm going to adapt into a wine/bar system. Good stuff!

I asked for some music on my families' Christmas list, so I'll probably be getting some of that this afternoon (some more Tull, Joe... watch out!)

Merry Christmas everyone! And if you don't celebrate Christmas as such, you know what I'm saying.

I actually got an ipod, which is so cool!!! I also got the Dexter Gordon Mosaic Select and the Gerry Mulligan Concert Band Sessions which I have already downloaded. I also received a few gift certificates and other assorted items. Got to spend the past 24 hours with family and friends after having my appendix yanked out on Wednesday.....each day is getting better! Merry Christmas to all!

Lots of Red Sox stuff, as expected, including the Stephen King Diary of the Season, the Sporting News World Series book and the Boston Globe commemorative book; the NESN DVD was good but could have been better (more of the "smaller" plays that made a big difference in the outcomes) but I defy any Red Sox fan not to get a bit verklempt when they show Johnny Pesky as the last out was recorded :)

Music:

the HRS Sessions from Mosaic along with the Brookmeyer Select

Dinah Washington, After Hours

that new Horizon CD that people raved about

the Curtis Fuller Delmark release from last year

David Hazeltine Trio, Close to You

The Mosaic Calendar

Bunch of clothes, and a Borders gift card or two

Oh, and a bunch of sushi dishware that will go back to Bloomies so fast it will make your head spin ... WHAT was my sister thinking?! :g

But that notwithstanding, Santa was awfully good to me :)

Merry Christmas to all!

Hey Dan, what's a Mosaic calendar? I have the 2004 Blue Note, but I've never heard of a Mosaic one.

I scored 4 RVGs this year (Leeway, My Point of View, Una Mas, and Jackie's Bag), plus Larry's new book. I had already bought Dan Morgenstern's book, so Santa didn't need to bring that one!

Plus, I bought myself a present from Chuck -- the AEC box, plus Missing Link and Have No Fear.

No shortage of good music or books this year!

B-) :)

P.S. Hope you're feeling better after the appendix thing, Mark. Load that ipod up with tons of great music!

....seem to be healing up ok after the surgery, just a little sore. The Ipod is great; got about 6 hours or so of music downloaded into it already. Still trying to figure it out! You seem to have gotten quite a haul yourself. I bought both the books you mentioned prior to surgery so I'd have some good reading during recovery!

I didn't ask for anything, but some of the hints I dropped suddenly popped up right here:

- The Complete Peanuts (first two volumes, slip-cased),

- some Elvin Jones (ProMark) sticks (big surprise, 'cause my last pair cracked the day before),

- LOTS of VERY nice (!!!) clothes

- My dad, amongst other things, sent me "Nikolai Kapustin. Piano Music (Marc-André Hamelin, piano). Hyperion 2003.

- Robert Gottlieb (ed.). Reading Jazz. A Gathering of Autobiography, Reportage, and Criticism from 1919 to Now. Pantheon 1996.

- A VERY fancy lighter.

- lots more

I bought myself the Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia, two Basie box sets, the Complete Dinah Washington on Mercury Vol. 1, plus LOTS of single discs.

And the food.

Where is that burstin' smilie?

It's been a good year.

Off to the next lunch!

Cheers!

Couple of highlights:

Washington's Crossing (very interesting historical account of 12/25/1776);

Larry Kart's Book! :excited:

Dexter's Keystone sessions (my first Mosaic); these are extraordinary recordings.

Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles Cookbook (already made three things out of it!);

Bose noise cancelling headphones (with the impending move to Seattle, I've got lots of flights in my future (Gail is staying here until August).

It's been a hell of a good Christmas!

Larry Kart's Book!   :excited:

Also got a copy of this for Xmas - an excellent read and good to dip in and out of. Just a shame that I would have to mail it over to the US in order for Larry to sign it. Highlights so far include the illuminating article about Wilbur Campbell, a fairly new name to me.

No Mosaics but on a practical note I did get a great roasting pan, which is currently being 'Christened' in the oven with a leg joint of organic Dorset lamb and full roast trimmings !

Dad Puts 3 Sons' Presents On EBay

Associated Press
Sunday, December 26, 2004; Page A16

HOUSTON, Dec. 25 -- The kids were naughty, Dad put the presents on eBay instead of under the tree, and Mom's been crying ever since.

Now, even the tree is down.

Saturday morning was sure not to be very jolly for three brothers -- 9, 11 and 15 -- who did not straighten up when their father told them Santa was not pleased with their fighting, cuss words and obscene gestures.

Dad and Mom had warned their sons that the Nintendo DS video system -- and the three games that go with it -- would head for the auction block if they did not get their act together.

"No kidding. Three undeserving boys have crossed the line. Tonight we sat down and showed them what they WILL NOT get for Christmas this year. I'll be taking the tree down tomorrow," the man announced in his eBay posting.

"If you don't buy them, we'll return them to the store," the seller known online as magumbo-2000 reported on the site.

Thursday night, the auction wound down with bidding at $465.01 -- below the price the man had set. He said he would probably list the items again.

A single day of particularly bad behavior set the Christmas crackdown in motion.

"These are normally really good kids," said Dad, who asked the Houston Chronicle not to reveal his name.

Dad even admitted that he and Mom were partly to blame for being too lax at times.

But enough was enough. The warning of an impending sale came earlier in the week at a sit-down between offspring and parents.

"We told them they were destroying each other and the calm and peace in the household. It had to stop," said the man, who did tell the paper that he works as an information technology specialist and lives in Pasadena, Tex.

The boys pledged to be nice but were back to their old ways the next morning.

That night, Dad announced that he would indeed be putting $700 in video console and games up for sale on eBay. The oldest boy double-dared his dad to make good on his word.

Son should not have done that.

Dad said Mom has been in tears since the showdown.

"I don't do it outwardly," he said, "but I'm crying on the inside."

And my favorite gift this year...

Only one cd (Well, a set so more than one) the Venuti/Lang  Forget who wrote the liner notes, they are fine in general, but back-handed compliments to Annette Hanshaw and Jack Pettis have not endeared him to me. <_<

Clothes, a watch...so very practical for the most part...Must be getting old! :(

Got the 5th season of the Simpsons as well! Might just live long enough to see the 16 (At Least) seasons come out! :)

I got lots of good practical stuff that I need. :)

Me too! The folks hooked me up with 6 of these slim Ikea shelving units for my discs and a new dresser. I spent Sunday & Monday assembling them and swapping out the old furniture for them. I've got about 1/3 of a wall covered with cds, floor to ceiling. This about doubled my floor space in the room (there wasn't much to double). Unfortunately, the cd shelves couldn't quite contain the whole collection and I'll have to buy a few more.

I put the entire collection in alphabetical order while I was at it. :eye:
