wesbed
GROOVIN' AT SMALL'S is 'the rules' to the organ, to my ears.
wesbed
'My Funny Valentine' from GROOVIN' AT SMALL'S. Still, what an incredibly awesome tune. Listen to this song on Sunday mornings. You will no longer find a need to attend church services.

CJ Shearn
up for air. I think Donald gave Jimmy *exactly* what he needed at this point, a very rhythmically responsive style to Jimmy's playing. Donald had figured out a way in a modern jazz context how to make bop style drumming really work with an organ, and Duck's synthesis of Max Roach, Philly Joe and Art Blakey was something he made his own thing. The closest drummer I've heard to getting near Bailey's level of activity with an organist is Byron Landham with Joey D.

Rarely does a drummer have a clue as to how to play with an organist. Too simplistic and un-Tony Williams-ish for guys these days.
.:.impossible
I'd recommend finding a copy of Live at Club Baby Grand. Man, that is a WILD recording, even moreso than the Smalls sets, in my opinion. Less sound quality, but more distortion and tempo!

CJ Shearn
Soulstream you are right about they don't make Donald Bailey style drummers anymore. Many drummers I hear with organ try to play as if its a piano and that doesn't work necessarily
